You are exactly right. The grain and figure of the Maple Cap along with the saw cut and book-match determine the "look" of the guitar. Mine is a 'Flamed" top. Other types are: Tiger Stripe, Curly, Fiddleback, Pin Stripe, Ribbon Curl, Blister, and BirdsEye.
The Beauty of The Burst by Yashuiko Iwanade details the LP look along with other pertinent Les Paul info.
Very beautiful guitar and great playing too! I just would like to ask how you feel about those pickups? I may be getting that guitar and would like to have your opinion on them. Thanks!
The Burstbucker1 & Burstbucker2 pickups sound great!. I use (FENDER) a '73 Twin Reverb, '65 Bassman and a Custom Vibrolux Reverb. I also use a Crate V18 with a couple tone mods. The Guitar sounds brilliant through the Vibrolux and gives you great overdrive at about 4 witn the Crate V18. It has to do with the EL84 output tubes in the Crate (18 Watts).
I definitely would recommend them. I played thru a Marshall at Gibson Jam last summer and it sounded great.
Thanks for the reply. I really like the Burstbucker pickups but have really loved the 57' Classics a bit more. But thats only my opinion. The Burstbuckers have a really bright, tone rich sound. I think I would go with the Burstbuckers and then (If I'm not satisfied) go to the 57' Classics. But I doubt I'll be disapointed. I can't wait to use them!
Hi, I've got a question that nobody as of now has answered, please can you tell me if this LP Standard came with the pickguard installed? I thought standards didn't come with pickguards at all.
Hi! eltiogamboin, Yes. This LP Standard did come with the pickguard installed. It is a "R0" 1960 LP Standard VOS (Vintage Original Spec). If you shop MF or GC and search for Gibson Custom Shop these guitars will show up. They're expensive so be aware. If you shop for the LP Standard, I believe that the '57 Goldtop still comes with the pickguard installed. They eliminated it on the other LP Std models.
The '58, '59, and '60's reissues all com with the pickguard.
Rock&Roll, Blues, Jazz, Country...Take it where you wanna go musically. I personally think james Taylor is a great guitarist. lisen to him some time. Great Guitar.
Was looking at some Les Pauls and found this video, your the first I've heard that can actually play and improvise. Is that a deluxe amp you have? I have a 65 twin reverb. I bought a USA custom fender strat, but I never got the sound I wanted in the guitar, so I reverted back to my first guitar, an Epiphone DOT with added Texas BBQ Rio Grande Humbuckers. Anytime I play a real Les Paul, especially vintage, it's the best sounding guitar. Thanks for reminding me to start saving for a Les Paul.
Been out a few days and just saw your comment. It's a "Custom" Vibrolux Reverb. They're a little hard to handle compared to the Deluxe, Princeton or Twin ( I've got a '73Twin). The amp's responsiveness will really show your mistakes. Takes a little getting used to, but I now prefer it over my other amps. As far as Gig worthiness, I play with guys that have Roland Jazz Chorus 120's and Marshall Stacks. I just set the Vib on a chair and go at it.
Most Les Pauls have a carved maple top on a Mahogany body. The back is typically not relieved or "contoured". I do have a 2006 Les Paul Special SL that does have a slight relief. It is a "flag-top" with a mahogany body...no maple cap, weighs about 8-9 lbs. Great little guitar. I'll be posting a new video in a few days of my trip to the Gibson Summer Jam 2008. I played the Special-SL there.
My Les Paul guitars ( I have 2) drift a little out of tune over the course of a day+ in the case. If I let them acclimate for a short period, it's not as apparent. Each string is a bit out +/-. No Major Out-of-tune issues, but they have to be retuned. My ES-335seems to STAY in tune. My strat and tele are also good at staying in tune. If you have major tuning problems let a guitar tech check out the setup, bridge, nut, tuners, truss-rod, etc. Also try different strings. Hope this helps.
Chris, if it's a new guitar it should not have any fret buzz. That indicates one of the following: a high fret(s), The nut is cut wrong, the bridge notch is incorrectly set, or the guitar requires a proper setup.
I'd check with the store and have them setup the guitar to remove the buzz, including neck truss-rod adjustment if necessary. When I get a new guitar I start tweaking it to my preferences in small steps. Maybe you should try making small changes to "dial-in" the guitar to your feel.
Yea. r1ppe is right. The '60's profile neck is thinner. The '58 is the "thickest" with the '59 being slimmed slightly. The '60 was the final version and was carried over to the SG's and most other models after '61.
To find your 'feel' for the neck, you really have to try 'em. I looked at 50+ and finally asked the GM at the Gibson Custom Shop if he had a guitar with a thinner neck. He brought out the '60. Good shopping for that that guitar with a 60's style skinny neck. I really like mine. :-)
That is good music. Very relaxing. Thank you for not putting any effects or distortion in your sound. It really shows off the guitar well (and it sounds great) when you just play it straight through a good clean tube amp.
You know, this demo I think really brings out a Les Paul's full sound. No metal or horrible, long blues that sound like nails on a chalkboard. That is very graceful, beautiful playing over the first track. :)
Unbelievable guitar UncleD, thanks for showing us! Enjoy!

why dont you hook that thing to a marshall and make it sing the blues

Hey 1FISHEY,
When I want to make it wail, I use a Blackface Pre-CBS '65 Fender Bassman. The same circuit that Jim Marshall based his amps on.

do les pauls have curved bodies like fenders so they don't hurt, or are they flat and stick into your ribcage?

Hey just asking around. Whats the difference between the 50's and 60's neck. Please reply
skateisgood 4 years ago
the 50's neck is thicker, and the 60's is thinner =)
r1ppe 4 years ago
Is there any tone difference?
skateisgood 4 years ago
Some say that the '58's have better sustain due to the heavier neck. I think it's personal choice. Mine sustains great!.
