This is my first time hearing the Waldorf Blofeld - some interesting sounds....working incorperating other synths is certainly worthwhile looking at...methinks....
Nice demo...but the recording is totally lo-fi...maybe a youtube thing and you might get an idea of how it sounds like but well...it's just not even 80% what the blofeld sounds due to bad mp3 compression here. If you want to buy that synth...check the hifi audio demos elsewhere. 7:45 and 8:18 is the nice stuff you can't get out of most other VA's.
could it be compared to a nord or even access virus when speakin of REALLY digital sounding patchs? i have two analogs, so i have that covered, now i want some cool digital glitches and chords and stuff...
@KotroLaszloLehel thanks for the great demo, definitely considering the blofeld now. i'm a newbie so excuse the dumb question, but with the blofeld can i layer sound on sound live and play them simulataneously e.g. first drum, then bass synth, then lead synth etc. or would i have to do that using some recording/mixing software like ableton?
The M-AUDIO KEYSTATION 88ES (keyboard for a life) is a very good keyboard but not have aftertouch and with aftertouch you can controll many parameters on Blofeld.
Sorry if my english sucks Im from Romania and my mother toungue is Hungarian:p
@bixiecribs I can understand why this vid with presets and limited sound quality could give you that idea. However, the Blofeld is incredibly powerful and versatile, and incredibly cheap in addition.
I assume you can hook up your waldorf to a DAW computer system and play everything through a midi keyboard and record all the sounds right into a DAW?
Thx, is it dynamic panning or do I have to record like 50% at left then 50% at right or is it perfectly balanced already? My SH-201 does not have dynamic panning :(
Thanks for showing this:D sounds really cool, another question, is it possible to tweak your own sounds? because i'm looking for something like a Virus Ti
Hey! I've got the same keyboard as you and I'm considering buying a blofeld! Can you midi control anything on the blofeld from the knobs on the keyboard?
The only downside to the blofeld is the cold sound. From what I've heard on the youtube videos it doesn't really sound that warm or fat, it has more of a thinner ambient sound (maybe it's just all the reverb everyone puts on). I think I'm looking for a more mainstream sounding synth if that makes sence..
Please tell me I'm wrong because everything else on this synth is so right, the small size, the knobs, the large screen and the price.
do you mean synthesized horns? because any synth can do them. Its a matter of setting it right, if you want actual trumpet sounds your better off looking at a sampler or hiring some session musicians because no matter how good you are at synthesis there will allways be a difference.....well for now haha
kind of weird or maybe not as i keep thinking the same thing ? i put it down to the online videos as i dont own one , can anyone else comment on this ? sounds really brittle ?
@karlharleman fuck warm synths. buy one of the million virtual analog synths to replicate 'warm'. this is a wavetable synth and it's all about "ICE COLD"..
@testclipper still a VA, not a wavetable - based on number of tables, the access virus ti would be a wavetable synth too; they're virtual analogues with added (sweet) features. the blo sure can sound digital and cold, even with waldorf's signature pleasant sound, but it CAN be warm. If it had not lost any features of the uQ (and maintained the new ones...wavetables, more filter saturation types...) i would get one in no time. Luckily, i do own a uQ
Have one of these in my setup and i love it. Versatile little gizmo with plenty of features to create some extrordinary sounds that stand out from other machines.
I'll add one more to MarctheDarc's list...an Access Virus Ti desktop. I have one and it is something to behold. I want more arpegitation though, so I'm looking at one of these or possibly a DSI Evolver
There's only 2 desktop competitors at this price-range, the DSi Mopho and the DSi Evolver desktop. They all pretty much share the same interface limitations. I havent seen much of the Evolver but i know both the Blofeld and Mopho to be strong items at great value, pair either with a good midi keyboard and you have an instrument that offers real competition to the new MicroKORG XL, the Roland SH-201 or any low cost Analog Modelling synth really.
I bought one at Christmas and sold it within 2 weeks, for the way I work it's just not practical, really slows me down and the preset sounds aren't good for techno. There are loads of them on ebay saying 'virtually brand new' which leads me to think other people have done the same. By all means, if you want to mess about for ages with it then get one, but I found much better results using my virus and software lie the sc 1080v and Minimoog.
hey guys i have just seen that there is now a new keyboard of this. Is this exactly the same as the blofeld just with added keys? also i am loving the sounds, is this easy to use as i am just starting out? please help someone as need a synth quickly. thanks x
The keyboard is just a midi controller. The Blofeld doesn't have keys, it's just a tabletop synth. It's pretty easy to use, but creating patches can be a harder task especially with such a limited interface and controls. It's much much easier to program that other similar synths such as Viruses. The Blofeld also has no midi out so interfacing with other synths will be a problem.
I'm ordering one today! I'm so excited because I've been trying to get a ppg wave 2, and could never find one. And I know this doesn't replace a ppg, but It's the closest thing today.

My favorite midi keyboard is Novation X-Station (the best feeling) & Emu X-Board.
KotroLaszloLehel 3 years ago
ok cool, I was looking at the emu and it looks like the one you got in the vid right?
its alot cheaper than the xstation, does it lack in quality at all? or just knobs and functions?
HoweGavin 3 years ago
Yes.
The Emu Xboard = midi keyboard + 1 VST instrument (aprox 1500 sampled instruments)
The XStation = midi keyboard + soundcard + virtual analog synth
The XStation keyboard feeling little bit better.
KotroLaszloLehel 3 years ago
yeah, the xboard has more keys for half the price though, so Ima go with it. are those 1500 sampled instruments on the actual keyboard, or on on the computer?
