I'm just getting into the Avetts but I think this is my favorite song by them, so far. I'll agree that they are great lyricists. They are also very gifted vocally.
This song absolutely sums up a part of my life that I'd really like to move away from, but in such a beautiful way. This band, for me, have some of the most incredible, intelligent lyrics I've ever read, and it's completely consistent throughout all of their material. I could listen to them forever.
@mark321P Indeed you're right, songs are always open to interpretation. That is 1 reason why music is such a universal form, it speaks to themes we all experience. The meaning you suggested is certainly one possible interpretation; but I took it to mean that he got back together with the same girl, but she had changed a lot in the time they were apart. It's like the song American Pie, even though I know he wrote it about a terrible plane crash, but to me it was about something totally different.
I hate when you're reading someone's comment, and it's going along fine, and you're agreeing with them, and then at the end you realize it was all just to plug some goddam song they recorded and posted on their channel. If you agree, check out the folk songs me and my sister recorded and posted on our channel!
@GetNReady101 Yeah. It's hard to recognize, but I almost feel like this is almost a concept album? Like is it just me or do the songs on this album kind of oddly make up a story that flows from one to the next if you use your imagination? About a man leaving home, falling in love, going through life's successes and hardships, then the afterlife maybe? I don't know.
yea i miss when you had to get the album and not go to youtube. The artwork that came with the cd, the fonts used, the way the cd looked, band info, lyrics etc.. it added to the experience of enjoying a band and it made you understand a little more where they were coming from and the experience you were meant to have when listening to the music.Nowadays you just youtube it or just download the songs you like.I miss blasting away a paycheck on cd's.Music in a whole used to be more intimate
@guonwonbotcha Actually, I do own this album. I just today was reading the long introductory paragraph about what the album's title (“I and Love and You”) means, in the Avett Brothers' opinion. I simply enjoy listening to music on youtube as well, because it's convenient for me, since I like to listen to music while I work, I work on my computer (I'm a writer) and constantly having to switch out cd's would be an annoying nuisance! Youtube is far more convenient for me.
I really like this band. I only heard of them a few days ago. Their songs remind me of music from the 60's and 70's when music, not all, had heart and soul, so rare nowadays. I don't think this song is about old love returning, but finding new love after your hearts been torn to shreds.
This is my favorite of the whole album. I saw them live a few months ago, and if you think they are passionate on their albums, you ain't seen nothin' yet. It was the greatest concert I had EVER been to, and I've been to some greats. They didn't play this, which was disappointing, but they came back for a THIRD encore and played Will You Return. Blew my mind.
This song is like the story of my life, with the love of my life leaving me (and hopefully coming back someday, like the lyrics at the end of the song). This whole album really resonates with my life for me.
that is the exact same feeling i got from it. the love of my life left me one day, but she did eventually come back. it's like the lyrics of this 4 minute song basically sum up the past 8 months of my life.
youknowmeimjosh totally missed the point of this song. how did that get to be a top comment?

although the screaming parts are un fit for most songs, it is the little quirks in all things that makes it beautiful things
