I'm blessed to have an acquaintance accompany me to my first Orthodox meeting tomorrow morning (So far I've been Protestant, and barely heard a mention of Orthodoxy)
This is a very beautiful video. Like another here I am Catholic but have respect for Orthodox Christianity. There are many differences, but many similarities too...and for that I am grateful to God.
@belladeballe update: since the time I initially saw this video, I've visited an orthodox chuch and am now regularly attending Liturgy each Sunday. I've gone through an inquirers class and have intent to be received in February 2011 on my 50th birthday. I think this video was part of the reason I decided to explore Orthodoxy. So thanks to you.
@belladeballe Same happened to me. I decided to attend a service for the first time because of this video. I was received through Chrismation about a month ago :)
Orthodox means the right teachings or old teachings.Catholics changed faith to suit their needs especially the financial needs but i don't blame catholics I blame the corrupted Popes in the medieval ages and don't get me started on Inquisition...The Catholic faith is corrupted and i hope that one day all catholics realise it before it is too late.
'A visual journey' of idols, false priests, pagan rituals and other abominations. The image-kissing at 1:18 almost made me sick. This is not Christianity.
an orthodox patriarch is the bishop charged with overseeing all the other bishops and the church as a whole. there is no single worldwide leader of the orthodox church because we believe that Christ is the head of the church.
a lot of so called church of christ today wold tell ya all lot thing about why the best, however orthodox is is jus based on an accent script and tradition of "christ himself "not the church itself, thus why it is the the best... orthodox forever.. may God bless us and whole world, your habesha berother eritrea/ethiopia...
Besides being a christian apostate and a practcing buddhist. I think that orthodoxy should enforce and increase it's missionary activity over the world!!!
i'm party from Greece and recently been traveling to countries like Ethiopia where majority people are followers of orthodox, but i wish others can see and believe in god the way we do.
@ultimateSTARSCREAM thank u someone finally knows i always argue with my friends cuz they say that the Catholics were the first Christians but thats not right.
Orthodoxy, THE COURAGE TO BE DIFFERENT, THE STRENGTH TO REMAIN THE SAME! God bless all of my Orthodox brothers and sisters out there on youtube! We are the same Apostolic church no matter which country you come from.
Rome's church needs to let it's priests get married or have girlfriends (like it used to). Celibacy is unnatural & ungodly, God is love, & the love of a man & a woman towards each other is a sacrament in it's own right. We experience God also through others; humans. Not just abstract metaphysical musings & future wishful thinking. The Kingdom of God is here amongst us now. If a priest cannot experience physical love with a woman he cannot experience being fully human & God completely.
im not a priest..... but does it really need a man to marry a woman?? yeah i agree that God is love.. i actually asked a priest why they do not marry.... and he answered that, we do not marry its because they were married to Jesus and their parishioners need them.. they don't have the time for their family for the sake of serving others and not to be served... im just confuse of what you posted... i hope this will not offend you..
asherasator, You are correct when you say that Rome needs to let it's priests get married. However, you should prayerfully reconsider your attitude towards celibacy. The angelic life, is part of our faith as Orthodox Christians. The Holy Scriptures, Fathers of the Church, and 2,000 years of our Holy Tradition, affirms this.
Be carefull of what you say about our Lord Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, and countless Orthodox saints that were celibate. If you are not fully human because you are celibate, then Jesus our Lord and Saviour was not fully human, and therefor, we are not saved. I am not saying this to attack you, but to help you aquire an orthodox mind (which is extreemly important in our day). Prayerfully concider this friend.
I disagree my brother. Paul makes it clear that celibacy is a blessing in its own right. I also agree with the church's stance that a bishop should not get married.

Beautiful singing but it's sad that the English language (or any Western language for that matter) does not fit the Eastern melody. This would have been much more beautiful sung in a Slavonic language or in Greek...
It is NOT Protestant! It is Church Slavonic!!!...in ENGLISH...which is just as important as GREEK...as ARABIC...as RUSSIAN...as GAELIC...as ARAMAIC...as SWAHILI...as ALEUT...it is my Friend in Christ...ORTHODOX!!!
The Orthodox Church is far better than any of the churches founded by John Calvin or Martin Luther. The Orthodox Bible is longer than the Protestant Bibles.
OK. This drives me nuts. The Orthodox Church of America is a heresy, just like the "Macedonian" Orthodox Church. They split off of the original Church, and currently are actually under no patriarch. They are not in communion with us, and we never granted autocephalecy at anytime. They went on their own, against the Orthodox Church. They can say whatever they want to. They are schismatics.
Um, OCA is in communion with all the other Orthodox churches. I actually attended a GOArch church that had an OCA priest serving alongside the Greek priest. Get your facts straight before spewing accusations.
These "carved images" are not being worshiped my freind. They are a reminder and a window into the life of christ and the Saints. When we show respect for these icons we pass it on to those being presented. Please do not judge. I only ask you talk to an Orthodox priest about any questions you have about our faith.
rather than "worry about the law of moses"- the lawgiver of the Jews, pehaps a Christian should be more concerned with keeping the "laws of Jesus". To old testament fundamentalists such as the evangelicals this
would be very difficult indeed. After all, without liscence to be mean spirited and bigoted- they would ultimately have to turn to the Catholic and orthodox churches.
That's why christ died on the cross for all of our sins. God loves us so much,he gave his only son for a sacrifise. Those Who have faith in christ shall not parish but live eternal life and there will be no pain or sufering, just happieness.
Im suprised how one judges the faith by one mans actions. Christ showed us these things would happen, St Peter severed the ear of a soldier, was that according to Christ? Christ choose judas who betrayed him, did that reflect who the apostles are? A true follower is one who follows truly. May our Lord Jesus Christ help us all in our struggles.
As an Orthodox how would you explain Orthodox fights in israel? Armenian "Christians" and Orthodox "Christians" were fighting today. After all what you Orthodox have done throughout of centures how do not you feel shame saying "God is with us"..
I suppose an accurate explanation would await further elucidation of your accusation, for I have not learned of Armenian Christians fighting other Orthodox Christians besides what little you have posted here.
Now what you need to keep in mind is this, Phaqtebi, Orthodox Spirituality is the oldest form of Christianity. Catholicism is second.
After the Rise of Islam circa 750 a.d., The Orthodox were massacred by marauding Muslim armies throughout the middle and near east.
Hey, are you putting this comment on every Orthodox related video you see? You do a lot of Orthodox related trolling considering you disagree with us so much!
SpasiGospode: Well the term 'Greek' is not usually used to denote ethnicity or nationality, but like 'Roman' or 'Latin' is used for the Catholic church. In medieval times, the Church of the East was known as Greek Church and that of the West as Latin Church (because of their primary language and theology, not ethnicity). Hence to say 'Greek' Orthodox Church does not necessarily mean the Church of the Greeks.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
O All-Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; O Lord, wash away our sins; O Master, forgive us our iniquities; O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for thy Name's sake.
Lord have mercy!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, unto ages of ages. Amen.
We are all sinners, and we desearve Hell, but God loves us so much He sent His only Son -The Lord Jesus Christ to live a perfect life and die to take the punishment we desearve for our sins. if we believe in Him as our Lord and Saviour and repent (be truly sorry for our sins and want to turn away from them to God) we will be saved and forgiven, and have eternal life.
we can't earn Heaven by keeping the law, Jesus earned it for us.
Not even close to the same. Externally, with vestments, incense, liturgical worship and hierarchical structure it may appear to be the same, but theologically the Orthodox and Catholic Churches are worlds apart. This has been the case for over a thousand years.
If we were indeed the same, we would be unified. We are not. Ecumenism isn't as pretty as one makes it appear -- to pretend that what happened at the Great Schism means nothing is to undermine the teachings of Apostolic Christianity.
This is the most intelligent thing I have seen written on youtube. You basically spelt out your belief in differences, and nailed it right on the head,
catholics and protestants are my brothers just as jews, muslims, buddhists, hindu or atheists...
but all these brothers of mine have left the way of jesus christ (or they've never been there) to worship something or somebody else... like the pope or forbidden sculptures or the kaaba or the flag of the united states or money or whatsoever...
forgive them Father, for they know not what they do!
Orthodoxy is beautiful because God's people (the Church) aim to purely and generously worship God. Worship is tangible, not abstract. We express our love of God and community through physical media -- liturgy, prayers, music, incense, icons, candles,... because God made himself physical through Christ.
I've seen many Orthodox videos on the web, but none move me quite so much as this one. It carries a profound peace and tranquility. Thank you for sharing.
IC XC NIKA. May God abundantly bless, through the prayers of the Theotokos. May she smile warmly upon you.
actually you don't, your church is in heresy and been so since it's error was condemned by an ecumenical council hundreds of years ago-miaphosite heresy.
The Orthodox Church is in basic opposition to the New World Order whereas the Bishop of Rome leads the Papal religion and its followers away from the true teachings of Christ.
There isn't any relevant theological difference between Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Filioque dogma is not a real difference. Catholics are philosophically Aristotelians, Orthodox are Platonics.
There are only traditional and political differences (like the autocephalia or the papal infallibility) that aren't enough to divide the two Churches. Remember: Petros and Andreas Protocletos were brothers. Orthodoxy and Catholics are brothers and should stay united against evil turkish islam.
Hi everybody. I am a VERY devout Roman Catholic and I really do not see any reason for all these arguements... It is said that the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church are VERY similar in teachings and so I don't see much need for this. I am a person that goes through youtube to defend the Church but I no longer do on videos anymore. If you want to know about this Catholic and Orthodox conflict...let me know and I can give you scriptural verses for Catholic teachings...
It's true that the churches could probably come back into communion as soon as papal authority were settled by both parties. However, there are extraordinary differences in the deeper understanding of a handful of doctrines. The Orthodox Church has theosis/deification, rejects original sin, understands sin, the incarnation, Mariology, and God Himself differently from the Catholic Church.
The Orthodox Religion I believe is based on Gods word and strictly follows religious texts and therefore is truthful. Westernized churches changed and only gathered texts which accomidated people. Christianity in Catholicism has been twisted from the truth and is based on economic benefits. It was corrupt throughout history and was preached by people who sought personal benefits. Overall catholics changed religion to what they felt benefited themselves.
you can not make a doctrine from one verse, but reading the whole Bible. see Luke 22:21-38 "26 But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves."
I'm orthodox and i really don't know the difference between orthodoxy and catholicism...actually i don't care about those insignificant things...anyway we are people in a real world...a world where we destroy everything even the church...so it doesn't matter...
I too love the Orthodox Church, however I converted to Catholicism from Anglicanism instead of Orthodoxy two reasons. First, the Spirit proceeds from the Father... and the Son. Thus, the schism is unjustified. Second, we are to remain with the successor of Peter. Christ established His church with Peter at the head. The west did not move away from the truth, but the East from the truth. That being said, I apologize for every sin committed by Catholics against any other Christians.

The Orthodox Church is far better than any of the churches founded by John Calvin or Martin Luther. The Orthodox Bible is longer than the Protestant Bibles.

Orthodox Church of America. Granted autocephaly in 1970
1029163 3 years ago 4
OrthodoxHellene 3 years ago
Moscow recognized the Orthodox Church of America's autocephalecy in 1970.

Um, OCA is in communion with all the other Orthodox churches. I actually attended a GOArch church that had an OCA priest serving alongside the Greek priest. Get your facts straight before spewing accusations.

Awful quick.....what with the Ark of the Covenant and all....do the images not count if they are carved from gold?
TorreyGilday 3 years ago
These "carved images" are not being worshiped my freind. They are a reminder and a window into the life of christ and the Saints. When we show respect for these icons we pass it on to those being presented. Please do not judge. I only ask you talk to an Orthodox priest about any questions you have about our faith.
yiorgos35 3 years ago 4
Once again,
rather than "worry about the law of moses"- the lawgiver of the Jews, pehaps a Christian should be more concerned with keeping the "laws of Jesus". To old testament fundamentalists such as the evangelicals this
would be very difficult indeed. After all, without liscence to be mean spirited and bigoted- they would ultimately have to turn to the Catholic and orthodox churches.
Now why would someone want to do that?
Get your nose out of Jewish Scripture and
become Christian.

That's why christ died on the cross for all of our sins. God loves us so much,he gave his only son for a sacrifise. Those Who have faith in christ shall not parish but live eternal life and there will be no pain or sufering, just happieness.
d789b 3 years ago
Im suprised how one judges the faith by one mans actions. Christ showed us these things would happen, St Peter severed the ear of a soldier, was that according to Christ? Christ choose judas who betrayed him, did that reflect who the apostles are? A true follower is one who follows truly. May our Lord Jesus Christ help us all in our struggles.

As an Orthodox how would you explain Orthodox fights in israel? Armenian "Christians" and Orthodox "Christians" were fighting today. After all what you Orthodox have done throughout of centures how do not you feel shame saying "God is with us"..
PhaqtebiDaBiblia 3 years ago
I suppose an accurate explanation would await further elucidation of your accusation, for I have not learned of Armenian Christians fighting other Orthodox Christians besides what little you have posted here.
Now what you need to keep in mind is this, Phaqtebi, Orthodox Spirituality is the oldest form of Christianity. Catholicism is second.
After the Rise of Islam circa 750 a.d., The Orthodox were massacred by marauding Muslim armies throughout the middle and near east.

SpasiGospode 3 years ago 6
SpasiGospode: Well the term 'Greek' is not usually used to denote ethnicity or nationality, but like 'Roman' or 'Latin' is used for the Catholic church. In medieval times, the Church of the East was known as Greek Church and that of the West as Latin Church (because of their primary language and theology, not ethnicity). Hence to say 'Greek' Orthodox Church does not necessarily mean the Church of the Greeks.

God bless you all.

C'mon whats with the denominational nonsense? Catholics and Orthodox are practically the same. We're all brothers
mafiaboy87 3 years ago
Not even close to the same. Externally, with vestments, incense, liturgical worship and hierarchical structure it may appear to be the same, but theologically the Orthodox and Catholic Churches are worlds apart. This has been the case for over a thousand years.
If we were indeed the same, we would be unified. We are not. Ecumenism isn't as pretty as one makes it appear -- to pretend that what happened at the Great Schism means nothing is to undermine the teachings of Apostolic Christianity.

Well done.

catholics and protestants are my brothers just as jews, muslims, buddhists, hindu or atheists...
but all these brothers of mine have left the way of jesus christ (or they've never been there) to worship something or somebody else... like the pope or forbidden sculptures or the kaaba or the flag of the united states or money or whatsoever...
forgive them Father, for they know not what they do!

One example- orthodox church didn't join the killings of the crusade.
tehdreamer 3 years ago
Orthodoxy is beautiful because God's people (the Church) aim to purely and generously worship God. Worship is tangible, not abstract. We express our love of God and community through physical media -- liturgy, prayers, music, incense, icons, candles,... because God made himself physical through Christ.

The Orthodox Church is in basic opposition to the New World Order whereas the Bishop of Rome leads the Papal religion and its followers away from the true teachings of Christ.

The New World Order? Do you mean materialism, greed, corruption, narcissism, and hatred?

So would their also be debate on the primacy of the patriarch of Antioch? Peter was bishop in Antioch before Rome.
vladimirmcputinstein 3 years ago
There isn't any relevant theological difference between Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Filioque dogma is not a real difference. Catholics are philosophically Aristotelians, Orthodox are Platonics.
There are only traditional and political differences (like the autocephalia or the papal infallibility) that aren't enough to divide the two Churches. Remember: Petros and Andreas Protocletos were brothers. Orthodoxy and Catholics are brothers and should stay united against evil turkish islam.
VGV88 3 years ago 4
Hi everybody. I am a VERY devout Roman Catholic and I really do not see any reason for all these arguements... It is said that the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church are VERY similar in teachings and so I don't see much need for this. I am a person that goes through youtube to defend the Church but I no longer do on videos anymore. If you want to know about this Catholic and Orthodox conflict...let me know and I can give you scriptural verses for Catholic teachings...
Sebastian
sebastians92 3 years ago
It's true that the churches could probably come back into communion as soon as papal authority were settled by both parties. However, there are extraordinary differences in the deeper understanding of a handful of doctrines. The Orthodox Church has theosis/deification, rejects original sin, understands sin, the incarnation, Mariology, and God Himself differently from the Catholic Church.
Zeikan 3 years ago

I'm orthodox and i really don't know the difference between orthodoxy and catholicism...actually i don't care about those insignificant things...anyway we are people in a real world...a world where we destroy everything even the church...so it doesn't matter...
peoplestopfighting 3 years ago
I too love the Orthodox Church, however I converted to Catholicism from Anglicanism instead of Orthodoxy two reasons. First, the Spirit proceeds from the Father... and the Son. Thus, the schism is unjustified. Second, we are to remain with the successor of Peter. Christ established His church with Peter at the head. The west did not move away from the truth, but the East from the truth. That being said, I apologize for every sin committed by Catholics against any other Christians.
