Americans don't understand the difference between Spanish and Mexican. Spaniards are European; they're white. Spain is located between Portugal and France. Mexicans had no Spanish ancestry prior to the Spaniards' arrival a little over 500 years ago. Prior to that time, for over 10,000 years, indigenous populations similar to present-day Native American inhabited what is now Mexico.

Mexicans ARE the product of the cross-breed between the original indigenous people of what is now Mexico AND the Spaniards. Like it or not, Mexicans are descendants of Spain -- among other European countries as well. Though mostly Spanish.Without the Spanish, we would have never had Mexicans. Would have never existed. It would just be a region filled with indigenous.
