Apparantly, this shit is happenning to everyone who has bought a PS3 at launch through early 2008. I have not found a solution to playing my discs without replacing the lens.

me too, I was able to play the PAL version of MGS4 and then I bought the NTSC game it worked fine at the begining then it freezed on loading just after you conferm autosave.

sorry to hear that, after a little while, the laser lens started to give in to any other games as well, needing to insert them many times for it to recognize. I sent the laser back to the seller, but the laser got there and still he did not refund me. I think the lasers are only sold by sony, or by some chinese or japanese shops. Here in brazil, i found a place that sells, but was way expensive, ebay is still the best choice, as long as you evade some sellers like e_bidhk.
