  • TURN THE MUSIC DOWN FFS I CAN'T HEAR YOU

  • feel the pan flutes!

  • nice to mention chicago. Mail Rail is unique because it was automated, it was used for mail and run for a very long time.

Chicago was man-driven and a totally different system but also unique because the grid shape infrastructure. those two you simply can't compare

  • The commentary is totally incorrect about this system being unique. See: Chicago_Tunnel_Company the same system that flooded out when they punched a pile thru it and connected it with the Chicago river.

  • Surely that's Lynda Barron (Auntie Mabel) doing the voiceover? I keep expecting her to say "Hello me dears" or lose Pippin on the tracks somewhere!

  • The reason RM stopped using the system is because it wasn't connecting anything . The mail center's have been moved to the outskirts of London

  • Un secreto más de London, que maravilla de ciudad, que especial, que histórica, que victoriana, que british....

  • Heh, the bus on the left at 3:01 has an ad with the words 'Kia ora' (which means 'hello' in New Zealand).

Anyway.. from here it sounds silly to have shut down this system. It ought to have been upgraded and expanded. A project like that could have in the short term created jobs in a recession and in the longer term made a dent on the city's carbon footprint. But obviously I don't know the full picture. Still, very cool!

  • I love that, like other posters suggest it's hard to understand why it's not still viable

  • Why discontinue this? THIS IS GREEN TECHNOLOGY! IT'S BETTER THAN PUTTING IT IN TRUCKS AND VANS!

  • @suchev1 Well it's still there it's just mothballed if they just do it up a bit it would be operational again

    shame really.

  • Why do we not value these things in Britain anymore? Everything that Britain invented often gets pinched by other countries - then we abandon them. Disgusting.

  • why did they end this service?

  • It's called privatizing.. A more strictly kept-on religion than marxism.. conducted by the right-wings. Better to reduce mail service transport to the night hours, by car. This magnificent piece of engineering given away to disuse and oblivion. No use to make an appeal.. Destroying capital from railways is a faith to some conservative elements.

  • @spoorus Some people don't know the meanong of the word "efficiency": "On the 7th November 2002, Royal Mail announced the line had become uneconomical with losses of £1.2M a day". A DAY!

  • @spoorus

Privatisation is bad... because its much better enforcing the monopoly of a particular service industry and thus driving it into the ground because no competition is allowed (competition is also a bad thing).

  • @TransportEU transporting mail on the road was much cheaper

  • @TransportEU because the maintenance costs soared

  • sorry, for the poor sound quality. this video is all there is. so little to adjust

  • Not really too much of a serious problem as the video is so great ... Thanks again, johanpesc!

  • Distortion in sibilants in the VO.

  • Great video - audio leaves something to be desired; voiceover gets drowned by sound effects and music. Can the balance be reset?

  • What a great video - this must be really rare. THANKS for posting.

I'd so love to see the Mail Rail now, particularly as it's no longer running.

  • Interesting, but the sound is awful.

  • It's amazing the things you never hear about!

    Thanks for posting :)

  • V. interesting. Thanks for posting. So to speak.
