All you would need is about 5 armed men to secure even the largest ship against pirates .

Mount a small naval gun or even just a .50cal or 30mm and any vessel with intent to board illegaly could be disabled before they got close , the price of this would be a hell of a lot cheaper than risking loosing the vessel or crew due to piracy .
