Just sad....announcer Kevin Harlan after Farokmanesh makes the shot "Good!!!!!!!" as in holy crap, I can't beleive that just went in. Also, 20 seconds of dead silence after the final buzzer. C'mon CBS. It's time for unbiased announcers.
@JSlice234 I think Harlan's silence after the shot is to allow the viewer to hear the crowd reaction. It's the mark of a great announcer because it lets a truly historical moment speak for itself. Sometimes the most powerful words that can be spoken are silence. I love Gus, but Harlan's call of this (and Farokhmanesh's shot in the UNLV game) were perfect.
Too bad Kevin Harlan (KU alum) was announcing as opposed to Gus Johnson. It would have been nice to hear an unbiased announcer call this game and magnify the fact that UNI won, as opposed to his ala mater losing. The biggest upset of the tournament, yet you'd never know it by the announcing
I'm a Hawkeye fan and I hate our basketball team, good for Northern Iowa for this. I watched Kansas dominate everyone their entire season and watched over half the country pick them in their bracket to win it all, only to get upset by fuckin' Northern Iowa in the second round. I love it. Good for them, Panther fans have all the right to talk about this for as long as they want.
I could watch this all day long. I was in Vegas watching it on a huge projection screen with hundreds of other people. A lot of people were dressed in KU clothes. Hours later on the way back to my hotel, I saw tons of people on the Vegas strip and not a single person was wearing KU anything. Wow, they go into hiding quickly.
I live an Iowa and was praying UNI would get beat.. i hate them with a passion. They're still talking about this win.. god it's so annoying!!! Maybe they should have beat Mich. St. and won a national title lol
@Jkahle69 As a Northern Iowa die-hard, I'm pretty sure we have a reason to talk about this game, and the best season we've ever had. According to you, theres no justification as to why were happy about upsetting a consistently top seed in the tournament. Quite frankly I'm really hoping you're a UI Fan, it'd make much more sense as to why you watched this video, and left this here comment. Could it be that Iowa went 11-19 on the season?
@Jkahle69 Alright, thank you for further justifying my point. It's much more impressive to think a team from the, "Missouri Valley Conference", upset the overall number one seed in the NCAA tournament. Might we think back a few years to a 3rd Seeded Iowa loosing to a 14th seeded Northwestern State, out of the southland conference? Sure you'd do all that well in the MVC?
haha like i care? I mean we only have 22 NCAA tourney appearance to your what, 7 appearances? The best have bad days, just like Kansas did against UNI. And yes we would destroy your little MVC who have one team in the tourney to the Big Ten's 7 teams.
@Jkahle69 Well wouldn't it make sense that a "Power Conference" like the big ten would have more teams competing than the MVC? Should UNI, or any team in our conference do remarkably well in a season, yet not win the MVC Championship, it's incredibly difficult to receive an At-large bid. Quite frankly we wouldn't be arguing right now, had you as an Iowa fan, not gone out of your way to watch a video detailing a Northern Iowa milestone, and proclaiming your passionate hatred for the team.
Maybe you guys should step up to the plate and become a major conference, but oh ya that's right there is only two decent teams in your conference.. SIU and Wichita State so the rest of you could never compete, even if the Big Ten offered to let you guys in I'm sure you would decline and go back to your MVC basketball because it just wouldn't be fair for you playing the bigger schools!!!
@GamersExposed Iowa might have football to hang their hat on, but UNI will beat them in bball 9 out of 10 times. To Iowa's credit, they finally got a 4 star recruit.
UNI gets raw, somewhat developed players...and turns them into amazing team players! Offense, but ESPECIALLY DEFENSE! If they can find a way to replace the rebounding (O' Rear), they are going to be serious contenders in the MVC!!!!!!
I remember knowing somewhat what UNI brought to the table. I live in Kansas City myself, and almost nobody DIDN'T have KU in the Final Four (I had Michigan State beating them personally). When we we're all sitting down I told everyone else in my family that was watching that if KU thinks they don't have to play their A-game, they will be ran out of the building. And that's the thing, everyone remembers that shot. UNI was ahead of KU for damn near every second of that game.
I'm a HUGE Jayhawk fan but that kid has got a pair. Full credit. No harm done. Except ruining my dreams of seeing a second national title in three years.
Jacobson's coaching philosophy allows Ali to take these shots. Kansas left him wide open and he took advantage of it. Sometimes you have to take advantage of unexpected opportunities to win the game. With the way things were going late in the game, I'm not sure if UNI would've had a better shot later in the possession. UNI could've turned it over again.
That's what people thought when the US. Army Major at Fort Hood starting killing people. He's a Muslim too. If a U.S. army Major can kill fellow soldiers in the name of Islam, anything is possible. All Muslims are terrorists.
@madbengalsfan85 It's not the minority. They're all terrorists you fucking naive moron. I can't wait until you and your entire family get blown up on an airplane by a Muslim terrorist on your next family vacation to Disney land. I will laugh at you. All Muslims are terrorists.
@Gaubuchon02 Then all Christians are all racist pigs, which isn't much better. Should I be expecting some burning crosses, or some retards protesting in white sheets and pillow covers. It is you, who is naive. And if some terrorist does make his way onto a plane with a bomb, I hope you're next to him...it would make the world a better place
Also, the Muslims who do hate Christianity do so with good reason. I'd hate Christians too after the Crusades.
the best part about this is that im from iowa, and my inlaws are from kansas... we called my brother in law whos a huge kansas basketball fan about the game. LOL he was so pissed!
remember i was in disney world inside rain forest cafe, game was on, could barely see, saw Northern Iowa was winning and this dude just pulled up and nailed it. Everyone watching was awestruck.
Farokhmanesh sucks so much is the beauty of this. You could not ask for a more unlikely famous shot. In fact when you tink about it thats the stupidest shot Ive ever seen. Anyone in their right mind would go for a layup, not stand there and shoot a three.
@ACDC392333 maybe this one was but there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for giving up 7 deep shots to the same player in one game especially in the ncaa tournament. Bill Self probably deserved to lose his job after this one...no excuses for giving up that many points to this one player
Arguably the most significant play in UNI history!!!! At least for basketball. I think Johnny Gray had several plays that were "better" than this when UNI was the #1 FCS football team in the nation. But there's been no better moment in UNI basketball!!!!
@mjago410... Obviously you are the one that knows nothing about college basketball... To take a shot like that is completely ill advised and anybody with any sort of basketball IQ would NOT have taken that shot, in ANY game. Yeah, he made it so it goes down and one of the greatest shots in tournament history, but if he misses it (which there was about a 50-60% he would have) KU could have gone down and scored, won the game, and it's known as one of the worst shots EVER.
You have a 50-60% chance of missing a shot from anywhere on the floor. If he didn't shoot the ball, do you honestly think that UNI would have earned a more wide open shot, especially a 3 pointer? It wasn't an automatic foul situation. Kansas could've force a turnover, get the rebound, race down the court, and get a good shot off. I'd give Ali the green light to shoot it every time.
This is my favorite basketball shot. I love it because he didn't have to shoot it, but he went for the opportunity to hammer another nail in KU's coffin. In sports and life, sometimes you just have to throw out the possible cons of a decision, and go for the dagger.
@imbobsaget Personally, i think they were good enough to make the final four. I watched them all year long and Iv'e never seen any team work harder on defense then they did.
You should hear Harlan call a game on radio...he's calling the Midwest Regional with John Thompson on radio for Westwood One...I heard him calling some of the 2nd half of the Ohio St vs Tennessee game last night...it was amazing...he sounds like he's on speed or something...he talks so fast...
God I'm not gonna comment my ass off on this game that KU should've won, because they lost fair and square. I'm a die hard KU fan, but I have the utmost respect for Farokhmanesh and this UNI team. They're no cinderella, they're for real. Watch out Michigan State
@rockchalkjayhawk55 Gonna have to call ya on you saying that it was a game Kansas should have won. UNI dominated KU from the start. KU never had the lead after 2-0....sorry but glad that you respect the better team.
@reingardl I never said it was a game Kansas should've won. I said I'm not gonna be childish and make up excuses, because they lost fair and square. Kinda bad wording, but never said KU shoulda won
Shots like that. It's the stuff legends are made of. He knew what he was doing, and put it all on the line. Sometimes that's just what you gotta do to immortalize yourself. Way to go, kid.
lol i go to UNI and every one is lovin Ali. You guys shoulda been watchin him all year he's won about four games for us. This was no surprise. HERE WE COME MSU!!
Ali puts a lot of time into practice. The Des Moines Register says he doesn't spend much more than 3 hours a day in the gym and usually shoots 500-700 shots. A slow day would only be 350 makes. Ali is also under 6 feet (without shoes).
im glad that he made the shot and UNI upset #1 Kansas, but to be honest, that was pretty bad for him to take that shot. just let those seconds tick away and let kansas foul you. Ali is a great FT shooter. ill take my chances with ali taking the foul instead of possibly missing and giving Kansas the last shot of the game to win it.
No sir, you clearly are confusing the difference between a pivot step and a "double hop" as you called it, he caught the ball on his left foot, planted his right, then proceed to move his right foot closer to the left one - a perfectly legal pivot technique, furthermore, there have been WAY worse travels not called in this tournament and college basketball this year than ever before, it almost saddens the purists (such as myself) to watch such a liberal interpretation of such a critcal rule.
I've read all the comments am I the only one who noticed that #11 for Northern Iowa does a lilttle hop skip before he passed the ball to Ali? You can here his sneakers squeek two times, the anouncer even says Oh my at the same time...Ref just ignored it...Missed Call Major Travel violation not called...
Ali's shot is what makes the tourney GREAT. He had the guts to take it -if he holds the ball and shoots free throws, Kansas has a chance to tie and/or win. He is my favorite player this year. So what if he doesn't do anything else...this is now a part of NCAA tourney history.
For those people who are saying that it isn't a great shot.. clearly you have never played in a competitive basketball game. It takes balls to take that in a regular season high school game. It takes something out of this world to take that shot in the NCAA Tournament against the #1 team in the nation... and make it. Incredible shot.
why don't players shot that shot more often??? i mean, it's as open as they could wish and set up for, so why not shoot it! it's just like practice with no one guarding you.

@aamorri1 He's Iranian. I doubt he drinks beer.

@RManFlint
True! I like this shot because he took the opportunity to put the dagger in the Jayhawks heart. He played to win the game and not to lose it.

@RManFlint You don't know Iranians too well...

I wish some coaches had his guts. I hate it when a team plays not to lose!
aamorri1 1 year ago
The shot heard round the world.
That image of Farokhmanesh celebrating after the offensive foul is the image of this year's tournament.
It's unfortunate that UNI just lost to Michigan State, would've loved to see them make the Final Four, what a story that would have been
imbobsaget 1 year ago 34
@imbobsaget Personally, i think they were good enough to make the final four. I watched them all year long and Iv'e never seen any team work harder on defense then they did.

Kevin Harlan had me rolling calling this game
Digadog81 1 year ago
You should hear Harlan call a game on radio...he's calling the Midwest Regional with John Thompson on radio for Westwood One...I heard him calling some of the 2nd half of the Ohio St vs Tennessee game last night...it was amazing...he sounds like he's on speed or something...he talks so fast...
wow13d 1 year ago
I listened to about five minutes of Harlan and Thompson calling that game before I got to a tv. Awesome stuff, great enthusiasm.

I agree. I've never seen his balls, but they must be fuckin huge

God I'm not gonna comment my ass off on this game that KU should've won, because they lost fair and square. I'm a die hard KU fan, but I have the utmost respect for Farokhmanesh and this UNI team. They're no cinderella, they're for real. Watch out Michigan State
rockchalkjayhawk55 1 year ago 2
@rockchalkjayhawk55 Gonna have to call ya on you saying that it was a game Kansas should have won. UNI dominated KU from the start. KU never had the lead after 2-0....sorry but glad that you respect the better team.
reingardl 1 year ago
@reingardl I never said it was a game Kansas should've won. I said I'm not gonna be childish and make up excuses, because they lost fair and square. Kinda bad wording, but never said KU shoulda won

Shots like that. It's the stuff legends are made of. He knew what he was doing, and put it all on the line. Sometimes that's just what you gotta do to immortalize yourself. Way to go, kid.

Ali puts a lot of time into practice. The Des Moines Register says he doesn't spend much more than 3 hours a day in the gym and usually shoots 500-700 shots. A slow day would only be 350 makes. Ali is also under 6 feet (without shoes).

@satchyproductions Dude had some balls (onions) taking that shot!!!
chubbychad 1 year ago
im glad that he made the shot and UNI upset #1 Kansas, but to be honest, that was pretty bad for him to take that shot. just let those seconds tick away and let kansas foul you. Ali is a great FT shooter. ill take my chances with ali taking the foul instead of possibly missing and giving Kansas the last shot of the game to win it.
juanpopoca 1 year ago
But he still traveled....You cannot take a step without dribbling the ball first...He did a double hop, if you can slow it down you will see it..
msilmon08 1 year ago
No sir, you clearly are confusing the difference between a pivot step and a "double hop" as you called it, he caught the ball on his left foot, planted his right, then proceed to move his right foot closer to the left one - a perfectly legal pivot technique, furthermore, there have been WAY worse travels not called in this tournament and college basketball this year than ever before, it almost saddens the purists (such as myself) to watch such a liberal interpretation of such a critcal rule.
ndluver1 1 year ago
you can take a step as long dont move your pivot foot.

So what if he doesn't do anything else...this is now a part of NCAA tourney history.

rainonyorpade 1 year ago 3
For those people who are saying that it isn't a great shot.. clearly you have never played in a competitive basketball game. It takes balls to take that in a regular season high school game. It takes something out of this world to take that shot in the NCAA Tournament against the #1 team in the nation... and make it. Incredible shot.
mjago410 1 year ago 61
@mjago410 Couldnt agree more.
awesomeman01 1 year ago
@mjago410 I onehundred percent agree with that statement.
If he misses that shot he gets screamed at by all his team mates and coaches.
hes got big balls.
awesomeman01 1 year ago
@mjago410 i agree man. to have that much confidence and belief in yourself is beyond what most ppl will have. that hsot was so ice cold man.
rootber200 1 year ago
why don't players shot that shot more often??? i mean, it's as open as they could wish and set up for, so why not shoot it! it's just like practice with no one guarding you.
