I was under the impression that this was a total improvisation on behalf of Sellers. It was left in because it amplifies the absurdity of the situation ten fold. Bravo Kubrick and Sellers.
@horaciosi Kinda. He's an ex-nazi who works as an advisor for the president, and he's disabled. His right hand is still a nazi, and it does the hitler salute and other nazilike things. He also does things like call the president "Mein Fuhrer" and then here, right before the end of the world, he can walk!
Since the US and Russia were no longer world powers, Dr.Strangelove would build the next human race;therefore, he could build Hitler's "perfect race"! His entire body came alive because Hitler's dream had become a reality, the power from his right hand flashed into his whole body! Brilliant!
I GET IT! Dr.Strangelove's body represented the Nazi Regime since he used to work for them, most of him was disabled. During the movie his right hand is the only thing that moves, meaning that there still was a tiny ember of the Third Reich left in him. At the end of the movie he jumps up and screams, "My Fuhrer, I can walk!"
Until that very moment, I could tell that Dr. Strangelove struggles with his right side. His right mind wasn't so "right": he wore a black glove on that arm, his arm was uncontrollable, and the hair on that side of his head was not well groomed. But finally, he's all right and happy now lol.
@FetaCheese222 Uh, study politics. The Nazis' ideology of economics (where right and left come into play) were a mix of privatization and public workings. The terms 'right' or 'left' wing have been bastardised over the years; wherein right wing is used as pejorative to somewhat oppressive governing forces, when all it means is that they have an emphasis on privatization.
@Agent1W I'd like to point out that the glove (and the entire 'alien hand' scenario) was an improvisation used by Sellers, who had seen Kubrick wearing the leather gloves and used the effect for comedy.
The meaning behind him standing and walking is...? I never got that, even after seeing the film 4332 times. Could be the irony that the world comes to an end the instant he stands? Or that he was channeling Hitler in a moment where he could seize power for Fascism with his new world order plans and miraculously becomes physically able again? Still, funny tone and great end to an amazing movie!

Yeah, "guide" or "leader". It's still used to today for innocent occupations like "Gruppenführer", meaning "tour guide".

This line completely spontaneous- the actor stood up, forgetting he was supposed to be crippled, and said it as a joke. XD
