it's nils lofgren who plays "Idas Sommarvisa" on the harmonica. he is from sweden, and "idas sommarvisa" is an old old swedish folk song. i know the song from the astrid-lindgren-movie "emil i lönneberga". i was very surprised to find it here as teh opening of bruces concert !
in every country nils played the most popular traditional song of that country when he came out. In Dublin, Ireland it was 'The fields of Athenry'. It gets the crowd going wild.

Yeah, I agree. It's too melancholy of a song to hop to. But, I have a feeling Europeans aren't sure of most of the meaning to his songs. Just like most Euros think "Born in the USA" is a flag-waving anthem...
Uhm, I would say its the opposite. Europeans do pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, not only Bruce but every artist. I could not say the same about Ronald Reagan who used Born in the USA during his presidential campaign. And who could forget that the state of New Jersey wanted Born to Run as their official anthem, lol ;)
you don't know what you are talking about.. But expect what??? You probably think that europr is england, france and gernany.. tell me the true.. do u know any other country from europe????
This is obviously a case of you not really taking the meaning out of the WHOLE album. Not only is this song sad, but it has hope - even though it's clouded hope, it still allows scope for jumping etc. YOU, "Sir Bruce Expert" should really know that you don't take the meaning of one of his songs alone, but include the context of the entire album. YOU of all people should know his albums are sonds woven together into stories. Try and listen to yourself before you write.
He'd better come back next year, hopefully to Denmark!
I missed him this year, i was on holiday in Italy, tryed to get tickets to the Udine concert, but off course the only people there we're albanian, so no tickets for me :(
Rockin.... God but does he rock his ass off... The is one of the best kept secret songs to the casual fan.... When I discovered this one i was blown away....
I saw yesterday's concert in Stockholm. Bruce played Johnny99 which is a story about a man comitting a murder and he was like smiling during the whole song. Clueless? No.
Well, I guess you like going to rock shows where everybody just stand still and stare and I guess The Boss really hates people making a whole stadium bounce when he tries to concentrate. OMG how old are you? Welcome to Stockholmto learn something about what it means to BOUNCE, to LOVE, to CRY - what it means to live and die :D
Uh no.. I'm on my feet the whole time & completely energetic. During the quiet songs, I keep my mouth shut & sit. But during crowd pleasers like "Rosalita," I'm bouncing & going nuts. So, I behave depending on the song's mood. And I'm 23, btw.
Yeah, no worries. Bottom line is that we all love the boss. Great show here last night too, btw. I might be going to Italy this summer to check him out, you never know if this is the last chance with ESB
Downbound Train is a beautiful piece of art and the song should have been more "listened to" than "jumped to". Too bad I think, because this song was one of the best moments of the show. If Bruce wouldn't have picked it as opening song, I'm sure people would have listened harder. I'm used to Bruce starting gigs with crowdpleasers so this was a slight surprise.
Downboud Train is one my favorite songs, it's so sad :)

You always jump to the opener, because of the tension being released.
Unless he would open with something from Nebraska, there will be bouncing. And downbound train isn't just a good sad song, it's a good rock song!

Oh my god! Do you seriously have an issue taking in WHOLE messages - "meaning of the WHOLE album".
Born in the USA v. The River?! Completely different contexts...
Whatever, keep on making daft negative comments everywhere, and I'm sure you'll enlighten everyone.

and you can't bounce or clap with this song??? Are you blind???? please...

Your English is mediocre at best. Sure, you can clap.. but hop wildly & chant?? Nope. It ruins the mood.

I can bet my english is better than your portuguese... ;)

Why are all those clueless Euros bouncing up & down to one of Bruce's darkest & most melancholy songs????
KleWdSide 2 years ago
After all this was the opening song of the night.. so the reason is foremost excitement

Look up "Astrid Lindgren". This melody is connected to her work. The best childrens author ever!

The melody is written by Georg Riedel 1971.
