Actually, Sora and Kairis heart gave some kind of special significance, but Sora's uses Rikus incomplete keyblade, born of the princesses hearts, to remove his own heart and release all the princesses hearts, but loosing his own in the process. As he does this Roxas is born.

Well, he steals your keyblade, and removes the keychain (it chages the appearence of your keyblade, i didnt know this until a while ago.)
