i saw an orange moon at night in 2011 i think or maybe it was 2010 but the next week on the news it said that there would be an orange moon but it will be the only time anyone in the world at the moment will see it but i saw one twice so do you think you could tell me what it was ? p.s. there was one girl at school who said she saw it awsell :)
@Jefforsonlab SLR camera without a lens attached to a telescope without an eyepiece, so the telescope becomes the camera's lens. All of that was attached to a mount that tracked the movement of the moon so there wouldn't be blurring during the exposures.
@XxFairyGrrlxX It would have pretty much looked like it did here in Carrollton, VA. The position in the sky would have been different, but the coloration would have effectively been the same.
Excellent... I had Camcorder on tripod all set up and recording, then along came the clouds and snow and ruined my shot... At least some people got some good footage.
I have a few questions about the temperature on the moon before and during the eclipse.
Somebody I know filmed it with his camera, and he was wondering if there would be rocks cracking on the surface of the moon during the eclipse. So now I am wondering what the temperature difference was at the moon's surface during the eclipse? Did the temperature change at all? And how low was it during the eclipse? And is it possible that the eclipse caused rocks to crack at the moon?
@insAneTunA No more so than normal. There is a huge swing in temperature between the sunlit portion of the moon and parts that are in shadow, so there would have been a temperature drop once the sun was blocked. It would take time, though, so I don't know how much the temperature would have dropped. But, figure it does this anyway over the course of its orbit. This would have been like any other sunset, just the night wouldn't have lasted as long.
@JeffersonLab Besides that, if rocks crack then I think they must contain water in order to make it possible to crack.
Now I think that it would be a nice experiment to freeze a few rocks at a very low temperature and to watch what happens with the rocks :-) Is it possible for you to show that experiment? Or is it too dangerous to perform that experiment in a safe way?
@insAneTunA You mean, like sticking rocks in liquid nitrogen? We could... The problem is heating the rocks first and then dunking them into the nitrogen. I'm worried that we would end up with a gas explosion. I'll think about it...
@JeffersonLab No explosions please :-) But yes, I wonder what happens with different type of rocks when they are cooled down with nitrogen. I know that certain rocks crack or explode when they are heated up in a fire, but what happens when they get deeply and rapidly frozen, and maybe after that heated up?

The moon was awesome the 22nd.
Up here in Norway it didn't really eclipse, but it was super big and really really yellow.
Loved it!
