I'm embarrassed. Ive never looked at the credits for that song. I would have bet my life that Chris wrote it. I stand corrected. I'm also a big Knopfler fan... can't believe I haven't heard this before.
Jimmy and Mark are certainly on par with Johnny, Chris and Co., but while this is a good version, I think they should have left it alone. There is no touching "the point" where Johnny Cash comes in, you've been waiting, waiting, and waiting, and then he hits like an atom bomb.
@vintelemon How did you hear this song in the 70's when it wasn't released until around 1986 or 1987? But maybe I stand corrected. I will do some research.
Was researching the song because I am familiar with the Highwaymen version. It's nice to hear it sung by the songwriter... it has a folk feeling to it and I enjoyed it very much. Glen Campbell's (who I love dearly) version not so much. It's hard to top Willie, Waylon, Cris and Johnny :) What a great song inspired by a dream, and somehow I feel it calls out to our human spirit and sparks something we know but can't quite remember about former life.
@DonnieDonkero : Sorry to hear your comment. The Highwaymen version was good, but a bit trumped up because it brought together four of country's greats, however, if you watch the video of them singing, you can tell there is no passion, just dollar signs in their eyes.
finnish version of this: "mä elän vieläkin"(I'm still alive) by Popeda/Pate Mustajärvi has become a legend over here. nice song, i like this one more.

Can't stop listening to this! This is what I call music ladies and gentlemen. Mark Knopfler surely adds a lot to this perfectly crafted song by Jimmy Webb.
The Highwayman is one of my favourite songs and this might be the best version I've heard. Maybe even better than the gorgeous solo piano version Jimmy did on "Ten Easy Pieces".
I know Jimmy Webb and Mark Knopfler aren't known for their singing, but they both do such a fantastic job here and their voices seem to suit the song perfectly. MK's singing and his vocal range has improved so much over the years, he's able to hit much higher notes these days and sounds better than ever.
@MKgetlucky Like fine wine Mark Knopfler improves with age! Jimmy Webb also sounds much more relaxed these days,so naturally his vocals sound alot less forced! Thanks PilkiesMakinMusic and You Tube for the upload and space this a very nice rendition of an all ready wonderful song! R.O.S.

This song has haunted me since I first heard it in the '70's. Adding Knopfler, my favorite guitar player/singer/songwriter gives me chills...

Haha, this version gets NO where near the one done by the highwaymen. This is pathetic.
