@dres223 Well, for instance, if you want to see exactly what is at the bottom, or what is infront of you. Usually you don't just run down like he did, you go at normal speed. It isn't easy to see what is under you while rappelling normally.
I could be Wrong however it looked very much like the abseiler lost control of that brake line and it was the belay man the the bottom who stopped him from going splat!
I would bet a testicle that if he had of used a prussik on that rig it would locked up for sure!
@SatansGeneral1 I had to let go of the line at the top and only grab it for break near the bottom to not burn through my inner and outer gloves. Experience helps. Note I am using the right. Proper technique is to use the left so the rifle is in the right. But my left was already blistered (through both layers) from the first rappel. That's what I mean by experience :)
@atarob LoL fair enough mate! You sure came down quick! I thought for sure you would hit the deck! I have never melted through gloves like that myself but I have never really rapelled that quickly either!
@kensei85 I disagree. I was slowing down for 10 to 15 feet near the bottom. Had I been late 1 or 2 feet, I would have still lost quite a bit of momentum. However, the physics is that the last foot slows you down way more than the first, as the rope is stretched way more at that point. So not all feet are equal. In other words, there wasn't a heck of a lot of margin...
@73bruno73 On the second half, the weight of the hanging rope below the figure 8 device was reduced and I was finally able to pick up the speed I was aiming for. But if I had lost control, my partner would have saved me. That's what we do in the army :)
I thought I recognized the city, and also the old Olive greens. Well done. I was a bit miffed at first that an Aussie was wearing our old Canadian green uniform. If you are Canadian, I am more the prouder.
@msamour You got that right sailor. Canadian. It is the "aussie rappel" because the aussie, having written the book on jungle warfare, didn't know of a way to provide covering fire for the first guy going down a cliff (bottom no visible from top). So they turned the guy around, put a break line in the left, slung rifle in the right, and what he missed in terms of precision shooting he more than made up for in speed and surprise. No one ever looks up :)
@MMilne78 I touched the pavement. It's the nylon rope. 3% strech you see there to stop 155 pounds going at 65kph (40mph). It is the speed you develop if you freefall about 17 meters(56 feet).
@Allenhagerty That's what it was designed for buddy. But the Advanced Mountain Ops guy that put me on at the top thought the crowd of civilians down below might be slightly annoyed by that :) BTW, I have no idea who flagged your comment as SPAM or why. But I unflagged it. Cheers.
somebody is jealous, doesn't understand physics, and has never rappelled anything over 60 feet. At 300 feet, the slightest touch on the wall will cause you to pendulum out 5+ meters. "Keeping ur feet on the wall" means waiting to pendulum back. 5 seconds per step? That's how everyone else did it that day and it looked awful. No Thanks. I used the 5 second pendulum to drop the whole way. Besides, who can "run" at 65 kph, my final velocity near the bottom.
@ClevelandSteamers10 lol, and who are you exactly...? This individual was in the military, and has prolly done more in his life than you will ever do, so why don't you go run back to mommy, ummkay.
@sain0777 Really?! 300 feet from a black hawk? When would you employ that? I suppose if the ground was too hot for landing and you were in a downtown core, or else into a tight canyon. Although the pilots don't usually like a sudden high deceleration stop on one side, so you might have to come to a more gradual stop at the end. Cool. Thanks for sharing.
@bkb0000 The measured speed at the bottom works out to equivalent 56 feet free fall on 300 feet of rope. About fall factor 0.19. Do you really need dynamic rope? Static still gives, just not as much. It's not like a sudden stop on steel cable.
holy shit i would have shit my trousers ..... i thought your not supposed to use dynamic lines for rappeling? only static ones... that stretch at the end coulda killed him
for the amount of line he had, it might have been "semi-static." i would have expected true 30%+ dynamic line to have sling-shotted him into the pavement.. but it's hard to tell just watching a video. distances always look a good 30-50% less on video, for some reason.
yeah. but it's called the "aussie rappel" because it was invented by the aussie in the bush going over cliffs where they couldn't see and cover the base from the top. So they turned the first few guys around, put the line in a left break hand and a rifle slung over the right shoulder to have some teeth on the way down.
Sure. That is static line. The break force never nears the rating of the line. This is not free falling. That was a 290 ft fall, but the final velocity is about 60 to 65 kph, the velocity of a 50 ft free fall. So 50 ft fall divided by 290ft rope is only a 0.17 fall factor. You fall on static line with a 0.75 fall factor or something like that and I would getting worried. But as you can see, all went well. Video doesn't lie.
@atarob that is not a static line, that is a dynamic line or rope. A static line can work for such a rappell but don't expect to get going as fast as the guy in this video and then stop as abruptly. If you do that with a rope that does not stretch or bounce as seen in this video you are liable to turtle or flip head first.... not good.
must be a belayer at the bottom ?? ? ? anyways , that is fuggin awesome ! ! ! ! Much more fun than my adventures climbing power towers in the riverbed. . . .saweeet
there is a "break man". A guy to pull at the end of the line if the rappel man passes out or something. In this case though, he had to assume the rappel man will break on time, as it was too close to the end for any kind of intervention.
Aussiedude45, that looked like quite a big bounce at the end. Do you know why they are using dynamic rope instead of static rope? I have always used static rope for abseling, even Aussie style and pretty fast --not quite that fast :)
how bad was that backlash? i saw a guy do this once from 60ft. he didnt know what he was doing and he got on the brakes a little too hard. he looked sac of potatoes on the end of a rope. i really think he kicked himself in the face.
This is called a Forward Run Down, we usually use a straight 8, not a rescue 8. We also attach the 8 to the screw gate which is attached directly to the harness, without an extension (shown in vid).
atarob - Now you are confident at the forward rundown, suggest you try it without an 8, 3 wraps on the screw gate and down you go, it is possible, however i dont recommend free fall during your decent. If you can do this then you have mastered the aussie sf forward run down.
The extension keeps the rope running straight back as opposed to around the side of the harness. Dropping 300ft at that speed can cut right through the harness if the rope is burning it. However, a chain extension is better since the rope might also ride the extension. As for straight loops through the gate, 1.make sure the direction of the loop works to tighten and not open the gate (I went flying once) 2.the tight turns cause massive coiling in the rope on the ground 3.not as fast
I thought it was cool. I do it for a living and most people never know we are there. Once I didn't see a woman and almost landed on her. Its a shame she was old or I might have enjoyed being on top of her.
That's the point: You wouldn't "see" because people don't look up. When you gotta' go down a cliff with no one able to see or cover the bottom, which way would you rather face?
@chimo934 obviously! the style of rappelling he is using is called Aussie/Australian rappelling, defined by descending facing downwards rather than the conventional method of rappelling.
P.S. why are you named Chimo if you didn't know that? If you had any of the simplest Combat Engineer training you would know that.
Yeah, I do this for a living too, and I remember the first time I made just 200 feet in that amount of time.. I went to take my footing after I pulled my gloves and grabbed the rack. Big mistake :3. I can only imagine how hot -his- was.
You know, for a crappy home camera shot by hand, I was surprised he kept me in the picture for as long as he did, zooming from max to min. It happened pretty fast for me to be dead sure, but I was within touching distance before I bounced back. The thing to realize is, even if the stopping point would have been 2 feet under the deck, most of the momentum is gone by then as I start slowing down from the point that I lock the break hand (where I stop bouncing).
Nice rappel! You say the music is riding the wind but I can't seem to find it on the 15 field art band website nor anywhere else on the internet. Any chance you might be able to help with that?
you would have to bag the rope to get rid of friction on that much weight. You would also have to rappel with a device that does no coiling, such as a break rack (z-shape) rather than figure eight (loop shape) so the coils do not accumulate in the bag and seize in the device. It would be challenging for sure.
Hey Atarob, good work man. I'm from Chile and definetely want to get into Rappelling,.. its awsome!!! Could you give me some advice to begin, like what kind and brand of gear use. Cheers!!!
But to be realistic, that rope and harness are now scrap because of that bounce at the end, In a combat environment you'd never go down that fast because you'd have your weapons and gear that you need to keep control of.
But let's get real, it's a demonstration of a skill. If he did it exactly the way the military and tactical teams do it, it wouldn't be as enjoyable for the casual observer.
I understand where you are coming from. Most people would agree with you. I on the other hand have my own take on it, but that's a whole other story probably better left unsaid on youtube. Cheers.
why would his harness be no good? there is no real shock load going on there. Even the rope will be fine as long as there is no heat damage at the point he stopped.
That was a 10 ft stretch on a 290 ft rope length. About 3%. I worked out the speed from the frame rate and height of the last 3 stories: 60 to 65 km/h. Equivalent to a 15 to 17 m free fall. 17m / 88m (290ft) = fall factor 0.19. Today's climbing rope can take over fall factor 1 many times over. Sharp edges aside, by the time the rope fails, you will be smelling burnt Nylon. But I understand, you are jealous and that makes you angry.
Those ropes are rated at 9000lbs, no human being is going to break one unless there is a defect in the rope.
Your point about eht speed and the stretch is a good one. The rope he was using must have been dynamic. Military, police & fire all use statis, which doesn't stretch. He'd probably have some serious injuries if he went down at that speed without any give.
I've never smelled burning nylon when descending and hope to God I never do, lol.
Actually, that was me on rappel. It was a Nylon twisted no-sheath 12.7mm, as I recall. Given a 3% stretch on a 0.19 fall factor, I would say it seems pretty dynamic. I was not too worried about it because I was not tied into the line. Rather, I am sliding down a figure 8 device. If the force grows too much, it will slip as I slow to a halt. That could cause a burn through the glove as opposed to snap my spine. As is, it locked and yet there was not even enough stretch to make me sore. Cheers.
Interesting rope selection. I'd agree that 3% is pretty dynamic. Were you using a heavy steel figure 8? Burning through the gloves is a better alternative than snapping your spoine. We did a demonstration where we literally walked down the side of the wall, not quite as high as yours, only about 7 stories. I'd love to go down a big steel cliff as that is the real intention of doing an Aussie Rappel.
There was lot of guys rappelling, usually taking a couple of minutes to descend. My case was unusual. It was my fourth rappel that day, and I learned on the first one that with any kind of speed, you can burn through 2 layers of gloves at that height. Solution: don't touch the rope until the end. Open all the way, then full break=no glove slide. Friction in device: huge. Melt issue: concerning: fine while sliding along, but don't stop in the middle. Best practice, use lots of steel, as you say.

That's the point: You wouldn't "see" because people don't look up. When you gotta' go down a cliff with no one able to see or cover the bottom, which way would you rather face?

@wangouthangout obviously you havnt played cod 6

not an aussie..but a canadian soldier!!!
chimo934 2 years ago
@chimo934 obviously! the style of rappelling he is using is called Aussie/Australian rappelling, defined by descending facing downwards rather than the conventional method of rappelling.
P.S. why are you named Chimo if you didn't know that? If you had any of the simplest Combat Engineer training you would know that.

Yeah, I do this for a living too, and I remember the first time I made just 200 feet in that amount of time.. I went to take my footing after I pulled my gloves and grabbed the rack. Big mistake :3. I can only imagine how hot -his- was.

I wish the cameraman had kept you in frame the whole time. How close did you get to the ground when the rope stretched?
clocwirkoj 2 years ago

Man, I do this for a living, his decent divice must have been just smoking when he got to the bottom. Cool though!
kennyraymon 2 years ago
only if the twin towers was still there. go aussie rappellin on it.
DunkableDave 2 years ago
you would have to bag the rope to get rid of friction on that much weight. You would also have to rappel with a device that does no coiling, such as a break rack (z-shape) rather than figure eight (loop shape) so the coils do not accumulate in the bag and seize in the device. It would be challenging for sure.
atarob 2 years ago
that seems.. too complicated..

Hey Atarob, good work man. I'm from Chile and definetely want to get into Rappelling,.. its awsome!!! Could you give me some advice to begin, like what kind and brand of gear use. Cheers!!!

Looks like fun!
But to be realistic, that rope and harness are now scrap because of that bounce at the end, In a combat environment you'd never go down that fast because you'd have your weapons and gear that you need to keep control of.
But let's get real, it's a demonstration of a skill. If he did it exactly the way the military and tactical teams do it, it wouldn't be as enjoyable for the casual observer.
ffryan 2 years ago
I understand where you are coming from. Most people would agree with you. I on the other hand have my own take on it, but that's a whole other story probably better left unsaid on youtube. Cheers.

this guy have the BALLZ....
rappelling from that high..at that speed...in aussie tactic??
he`s something else...
1stCAVMeserve 2 years ago
It was a good tick...
But what a stupid guy... he thinks he's badass but his rope is very close to be useless, his harness for sure is no good any more...
Poor guy.
pitglez 3 years ago
why would his harness be no good? there is no real shock load going on there. Even the rope will be fine as long as there is no heat damage at the point he stopped.

It's ok, I'm sure the army will buy him a new one instead of scolding him for doing a demonstration they probably asked him to do.

But I understand, you are jealous and that makes you angry.
atarob 2 years ago
Those ropes are rated at 9000lbs, no human being is going to break one unless there is a defect in the rope.
Your point about eht speed and the stretch is a good one. The rope he was using must have been dynamic. Military, police & fire all use statis, which doesn't stretch. He'd probably have some serious injuries if he went down at that speed without any give.
I've never smelled burning nylon when descending and hope to God I never do, lol.
ffryan 2 years ago
Actually, that was me on rappel. It was a Nylon twisted no-sheath 12.7mm, as I recall. Given a 3% stretch on a 0.19 fall factor, I would say it seems pretty dynamic. I was not too worried about it because I was not tied into the line. Rather, I am sliding down a figure 8 device. If the force grows too much, it will slip as I slow to a halt. That could cause a burn through the glove as opposed to snap my spine. As is, it locked and yet there was not even enough stretch to make me sore. Cheers.
atarob 2 years ago
Interesting rope selection. I'd agree that 3% is pretty dynamic. Were you using a heavy steel figure 8? Burning through the gloves is a better alternative than snapping your spoine. We did a demonstration where we literally walked down the side of the wall, not quite as high as yours, only about 7 stories. I'd love to go down a big steel cliff as that is the real intention of doing an Aussie Rappel.
ffryan 2 years ago
There was lot of guys rappelling, usually taking a couple of minutes to descend. My case was unusual. It was my fourth rappel that day, and I learned on the first one that with any kind of speed, you can burn through 2 layers of gloves at that height. Solution: don't touch the rope until the end. Open all the way, then full break=no glove slide. Friction in device: huge. Melt issue: concerning: fine while sliding along, but don't stop in the middle. Best practice, use lots of steel, as you say.
