I feel so ashamed of Rolling Stone not to include this classic! Really, I'm doing stuff esque of the 70s Glam in the UK and I want to do this with my band!
aging formula for all great bands that have existed in music: when your young your clean cut, when your older people grow your beard and have long hair. the beatles did it.
@Drunkmeonatrip he wasn't touring with them since the early 70's at this point..he was dealing with a lot shit and was locked up in his bedroom for like 3 years..now ironically , he's the only brother left, and touring occasionally..funny how life is, isn't it ?
"None of the guys go steady, 'cause it wouldn't be right. To leave thier best girl home on a Saturday night." (-Still can't understand how Jim Morrison got the greatest American Poet title.)
This is so fucking good I want to set my guitar on fire.....say what you will about any of them...but together they were the most potent and talented rock band that will ever exist
@bossrebelrocks I have never considered the Beach Boys a rock band, but more of a pop band. I will agree that they were the best in that genre and will always be. Best of all, they all were a pop BAND! Not group! Really, the Beach Boys need to be remembered. I guess if calling them a rock band does, then let it be. But I still have my stance!
The last time we get to see DW somewhat healthy, involved, sober & together in the music! He was fighting a losing battle with his demons, but on this night--for a few magic minutes--he was THE quintesserntial Beach Boy. RIP 4-Ever, Denny. Wolfsky9
@Melo71 Brian is at a grand piano on the right side of the stage. He sings one lead verse on Sloop John B and the bridge on Surfer Girl. Other than that I don't know if he sings even background vocals the rest of the concert or if his piano is even plugged in. BW looks pretty rough as he was very heavy and I forget if this is before or after Landy started treating him the 2nd time.
Dennis was never a good drummer. He was just a banger. Plus at this stage in his life he was a full blown alcoholic which made his drumming even worse.
It has been said in the very last few years with Dennis playing drums for the BB's is that they had the amps turned right off on his drums and had a drummer backstage doing the drumming.
hä wer zur hölle singt da die falsette stimme? das war doch eigentlich der Bassist aber hier singt er se nich (wie man kurz vor ende sieht als er gezeigt wird) und die anderen singen auch immer das get around round round blub?
I was there! My first concert, I won tickets from Roger Scott on Capital Radio and it was a great day, despite the rain. Also appearing were Mike Oldfield and Santana.
Denny was a tolerable drummer, that's all. Just because he passed away young doesn't make him a percussion God. And to Lain..Sorry my friend, but there is no "back beat" when you're doing a simple eighth/split half beat, and you don't get a better "stadium concert" beat playing opposite hands. It doesn't work that way.
@gostillerz Yup, I love Denny but the guy just played a right handed kit left handed which is just open. by this time Denny was a train wreck and this is the drumming of a drunk man. The kit sounds great though but the flailing and the "I dont know what to hit next thing" comes up time and time again, still miss the guy terribly.
. This message was bought to you by a life long Denny and beach boys fan and drummer for 32 years.
@asura0528808 Yes, they are. Bruce Johnston on the small white keyboard (brought in after Brian left) Al Jardine (white fedora), Mike Love (singing lead), Carl Wilson (green jacket) and Dennis Wilson (drums). I think Brian may be on the piano, but he's not shown close in this video. All but Bruce are original band members. Of course, Dennis and Carl are deceased now.
Dennis showed how a much better drummer he was on this than given credit for . His vocal on baby blue showed he could sing to and such a a shame his starshine came to late to be really appriciated in the mainstream .
This was a fabulous concert! To whomever posted these, could you please post the 'Lady Lynda' song? It's a great song that doesn't get much recognition, but it was superb in this concert! The ending of the song here is absolutely beautiful and they do it ONE MORE TIME!!!
Well by looking at all of the singing band members they all sang the "round round get around I get around" part on the chorus. So that only leaves two options. 1. Brian sang the lead falsetto (which is very unlikely.) or, 2. The lead falsetto was overdubbed at a later date for the live album and concert film. It's a shame they didn't film Brian much on this date.
@ExplosiveSandwich - The falsetto was sung by Bobby Figueroa who was playing percussion next to Dennis. Brian's voice at this time was in no condition to be singing falsetto. Brian isn't seen much on film in this concert because most of the time he was just sitting plunking at the piano.
@lptomtom Between 1964 and 1980 Brian Wilson went through his collapse into drug and alcohol abuse and psychological problems. If you look up any Beach Boys gig from the mid-70s where Brian sings, his voice is completely hoarse.
@FecskeDavid It might be Bruce Johnston doing the falsettoes. I just read the wikipedia on Brian Wilson and it said BJ was handpicked to be Brian's on the road substitute. But you'd probably have to see a video of BJ singled out to verify.
Now THAT is what I call drumming. Dennis Wilson ladies and gents!!!!! I can just see after the concert was over Mike telling Dennis it was too fast and to not ever play that fast again. But I gotta tell ya, I loved the feel of the music at that tempo. It sure got me up dancing and moving my head in every direction. DENNY WILSON IS THE MAN!!!! I wish he was still around so I could enjoy him in person at a concert. RIP Denny and Carl!!
@only4tsc On the front row from left to right it's Bruce Johnston (keys), Al Jardine (rhythm guitar), Mike Love on lead vocals, Carl Wilson (guitar and green jacket) and Brian was at the far right on piano during the concert but he doesn't get a closeup here. Dennis is on drums behind and that's longtime Beach Boys sideman Ed Carter on guitar (usually bass). Bobby Figueroa is at the back there somewhere too singing and playing percussion and Joe Chemay is on bass somewhere on there.
This is America's greatest band over the long-haul. They are a national treasure. It's really unfortunate that Mike has been allowed to keep the name out there. It saddens me whenever I see an appearance on TV. Without a Wilson onstage...there is no Beach Boys. When Carl died, the name Beach Boys should have been laid to rest with him. The touring jukebox is horrible. Brian's band is decent. It's clean, but lacks the soul of Carl's voice...or Brian's old voice.
It was typical of the Beach Boys to bring up the tempo of many of their old hits for concerts. It might be true that Mike didn't like the fast tempo...but Dennis understood the crowd and the energy of the moment. When Dennis was gone, the band lost a lot of its energy on tour. They still had some great performances, but everything was more mechanical. Carl held it together and coached the drummers onstage. Al worked hard at keeping the integrity of the sound also. Yes, rockers grow old.
Dennis's drumming throughout this concert was just amazing. His style was to use his right hand as the back beat, where most right handed drummers use their left. It adds a real meaty back beat just perfect for stadium concerts.
@IainB1511 I saw them in Stockholm just a few weeks before this concert, then Dennis was fucking drunk and Brian went on to take a nap behind a speaker during the show. It was not the best time for the Beach Boys, really.
i totally agree...though dennis didnt play on their hit recordings...hal blaine did
but...in concert...dennis was great for the reasons you pointed out...he tended to speed up a bit..but he banged the hell out of the skins and in big arenas and stadiums it fit the bill his playing...
I'm fortunate enough to have both the CD and the DVD. Sadly, the DVD cut out when the crowd there (I THINK it was either 50,000 or 75,000 people) joined the band in singing "Happy Birthday" to Brian, who turned 38 the previous day.
aawweeesssooommmeeeee! Dennis just tears the shit out of the drums, but for classics sake I wouldve LOVED to see him down front doing the famous CLAP!!
@44fastgun Brian Wilson is def on stage, Mike Love even announces his name before his first verse. Also this show/dvd is billed as the last performace with all original members. I guess bruce johnson is the guy on the other end of the stage with the electric piano? I freakin love this dvd, i may need to go buy it again.
@danielscissorhands The guy at the back in white, without the hat is Ed Carter. As you look at them it's Bruce Johnston on keyboard, Al Jardine (white suit and hat), Ed Carter, Dennis Wilson on drums, Mike Love vocals, the one in the green jacket is the ever beautiful Carl Wilson and over on the white piano as JLoose1982 says is Brian Wilson.
@slungman00 I find it annoying when people slag off modern music... I'm a massive Beach Boy fan and all my favourite music is from decades gone past... but there is really good music out there now. The mainstream stuff (Mr Bieber) isn't truly terrible, but scratch below the surface and there is good stuff to be had!
@OropherThranduil Sorry, that was a typo. I meant to say "is truly terrible". Have I redeemed my self in your eyes oh great one? I own 20 Beach Boy albums, it's safe to say I have good taste in music! :P
the only ones who look like a genuine rock stars is Dennis.and the dude in the white suit , of which i forget his name !!..oops !!.everyone else looks like your next door neighbor, or boss at work !!..lol !!
Brian lost his falsetto voice during his bout with various problems. Over the years, the high falsetto role was passed around. It was to Bruce Johnston at the piano for a while, but eventually they hired a guitar player to stand in the background and do it. Al Jardine's nephew took at role during the latter years...the final edition of the real Beach Boys band.
@jangodreams jeff Foskett is the guitarist that sang Brian's falsetto for years with the beach boys, he as very close to carl and when mikey loveless got control of the touring band he was quick to get rid of some of the long time touring members of the beach boys, the ones that had gone against him in arguments with Carl. Jeff is now the musical director of Brian's touring band, a band that is 100 times better than Love's touring juke box.
@IainB1511 there is no way Brian's group is better. I saw them live in Boston and didn't compare to the quality and sound of Mike's group. I wish Brian would ditch the mints and bring Jeff along to rejoin Mike and the guys.
@mattygeetarross It was Bobby Figueroa. During those days it was not unusual for someone to back up Dennis. Bobby is also the one singing the falsetto. There was some documentary footage from this show that came out long before the DVD and they focused a great deal on Bobby singing lead.
is Brian singing the falsetto here?

As you look at them it's Bruce Johnston on keyboard, Al Jardine (white suit and hat), Ed Carter, Dennis Wilson on drums, Mike Love vocals, the one in the green jacket is the ever beautiful Carl Wilson and over on the white piano as JLoose1982 says is Brian Wilson.

I'm pretty jealous of you older folks, you had all these amazing bands and we've got.. Justin Bieber :-/.
slungman00 1 year ago
@slungman00 I find it annoying when people slag off modern music... I'm a massive Beach Boy fan and all my favourite music is from decades gone past... but there is really good music out there now. The mainstream stuff (Mr Bieber) isn't truly terrible, but scratch below the surface and there is good stuff to be had!

@Karateworm exactly my fine fellow

@OropherThranduil Sorry, that was a typo. I meant to say "is truly terrible". Have I redeemed my self in your eyes oh great one? I own 20 Beach Boy albums, it's safe to say I have good taste in music! :P

@OropherThranduil Respect on that front! That's my eventual aim, but being 17 and not working makes it a little tricky financially.

Brian lost his falsetto voice during his bout with various problems. Over the years, the high falsetto role was passed around. It was to Bruce Johnston at the piano for a while, but eventually they hired a guitar player to stand in the background and do it. Al Jardine's nephew took at role during the latter years...the final edition of the real Beach Boys band.
jangodreams 1 year ago
@jangodreams jeff Foskett is the guitarist that sang Brian's falsetto for years with the beach boys, he as very close to carl and when mikey loveless got control of the touring band he was quick to get rid of some of the long time touring members of the beach boys, the ones that had gone against him in arguments with Carl. Jeff is now the musical director of Brian's touring band, a band that is 100 times better than Love's touring juke box.
IainB1511 1 year ago 2
@IainB1511 there is no way Brian's group is better. I saw them live in Boston and didn't compare to the quality and sound of Mike's group. I wish Brian would ditch the mints and bring Jeff along to rejoin Mike and the guys.

There is another drummer with a full kit there, not sure what he is doing??
mattygeetarross 1 year ago
@mattygeetarross It was Bobby Figueroa. During those days it was not unusual for someone to back up Dennis. Bobby is also the one singing the falsetto. There was some documentary footage from this show that came out long before the DVD and they focused a great deal on Bobby singing lead.
amenhotep04 1 year ago
@amenhotep04 Why Brian didn't sang the falsetto part?
