I love the way that Fats obviously just thought that Jools was some random reporter and had no idea he could actually play. The look on his face is priceless
Playing it in C#major too! Wow. Brilliant pair of pianists - just the best. Loved this programme and I have it all on Video, somewhere. Can never get tired of watching this.
Regrettably, I am not equipped to converse further with you at the superior intellectual level which you clearly inhabit.

I remember the start of this interview and Mr Domino was not interested in Jools interviewing him at all. Then, when he realised Jools could play, the whole thing changed; the lights came on and then we got this! FAB
Hi nikkeljoe can you put me out my misery and tell me where ya got ya copy of the whole Walking to New Orleans program of if anyone else can help me would be grateful.
I commented on this once before and I feel I have to again. How truly wonderful, especially to see Fat's face when he realises Jools can play like the best of 'em. The big smile that comes to his face when Jools starts to play is just beautiful and at the end when they both show such respect for each other. Magical, just the way music should be. Excellent upload bro', thank you so much. Peace.
@Hania454 I agree with you in most of what you say, but Jools are not "the best best of´em" ! Fats is the no. one pianoman in R&R, bether than Little R, Ray C. and Jerry Lee ! Ask Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Elton John .
@rockermanmatt your kidding right? What Jools was doing was pretty good but anyone whose played for a year or two can do it no problem plus he was a little sloppy. Fats' playing even right there with one hand just messing around was so clean tight and flashy it was amazing. Night and day man + fats is an innovator
@juvenal660 Lol. I think you need to check out Jools a bit more man. Maybe watch him playing Bumble Boogie or the video in the side "Four-hands boogie woogie" with Dr. John.
Fats is nowhere near Jools in terms of piano playing. You said "anyone" can play what Jools played which is true, because it's Fat's song - what he played with his right hand is easy too if you've played boogie woogie for a few years.
@ivancarling Yes I do, and I can tell that Jools Holland is a far better all round pianist than Fats. Fats is great and a massive influence but that doesn't mean there aren't much better pianists.
met fats in dublin concert 1974 he made me try on his diamonds what a thrill he sang blue berry hill especially for me and made me take a bow . never met anyone who does not like fats he is simply the greatest and a very modest and true gentleman .i fulfilled my ambition by being given the chance to meet fats will never forget this till the day i die ....fats number one fan.
Happy 81st MR Domino - may your years be as wonderful to u as the minutes I spent talking to you at Tips were to me. Be blessed, as you are such a blessing yo us. Josephine sends BIG purrs.
Thanks so much for posting this. I saw it when first broadcast and have a recording somewhere that I cannot find. If I find it I will try to contact those people who have left enquiries below. SPUNKYBLUNDERBUS who has posted below sums up my feelings about this clip precisely.
I recorded this Channel 4 programme onto VHS tape in 1985 and thought it was one of the best pieces of TV Jools ever did. Alas, I left the tape behind when I divorced in 1997 and would love a copy on tape or DVD.
I managed to get a copy of the full 74 minute show. Just great Jools and cast including Lee Dorsey, Allen Tousant, Dr John, Neville Bros, Luther Kent, Sting, Robie Coltrane, Paula Yates. Mind you cost me both arms and legs.
I remember seeing the tv show ages back here in australia and have been trying to find out who the black guitar player was he talked to who played a song just on electric guitar...so long ago but I think it was "lipstick on my collar"?
Why have I never found this before??????? So bloody awesome, two legends together! Mind you, Jools comes across as a proper cockney yob in his earlier years lol. Thanks SO SO much for posting!!!
Does anyone have a copy of the whole Walking to New Orleans program ? It was brilliant. I had a copy but lost it in a fire. BTW, saw him at Sydney Opera House on Friday night. A fantastic night out.
I searched for this clip on the off chance, after reading Jools' autobiography....what an amazing clip!! The interview portion is rubbish, but when Jools starts playing with Fats the mutual respect is obvious!! Im Ready is just fantastic.
I love it! i went to see Fats Domino, in London a couple of months after this was film - fantastic !! also you should read about this meeting between Jools and Fats in Jools Holland's Autobiography 'Barefaced Lies & Boogie-Woogie Boasts.' The chapter is called 'Walking to New Orleans.' Absolulely hilarious.
i just missed the first bit when taping it back in the 80's. this is all that was broadcast unfortunately though, it was a documentary where jools went all over new orleans. glad you enjoyed.
hey, my dad taped thisin the 80,s and thought it was amazing, i will never get over not having him around , ive looked for this clip for ages and can see why my dad thought it was so good , my heart melted when i watched it , BRILL !!
