With over 5000 (closer to 6000) 737's in service as of Jan 2008, Airbus is way behind with only 3000 flying A320's, and they didn't start flying until 1988, where as the 737 started service in 1968. I think you can draw your own conclusions from the time and numbers. Air safety is much better now than it was 30 years ago.
