Ao dai can be BOTH traditional and modern. That's the advantage of it. ^_^ It's traditional in its gracefulness and femininity, yet it's modern in its convenience, practicality, and fitness into today's society.
The ancient áo dài (or whatever term it was called) worn by Vietnamese royal women from the 10th to 17th century was beautiful too. It was worn with skirt with a slash or belt at waist and a long overcoat. Too bad no one is reviving it.
This isn't Chinese dress, it's a Manchurian traditional dress. It's not China.

Yes, I said Aoi dai was influenced from Qing's Qipao because Qing was the ruling dynasty of China at that time and they weren't chinese at all. If Ao Ngu than was influenced from Ao dai, then it would make sense if they came before the introduction of Ao Dai in 18th century. But they didn't.

@YuDumPhuck during 1600(Qing Dynasty) the manchu rule china, the emperor command all people to wear qipao instead of hanfu, the qing dynasty last from 1600 till 1912, after 1912, qipao was not popular anymore, then 1920, qipao make a come back.. And your emperor wear it during 1800, 200 years after china wore it, thats means china influence your people.. But, in my opinion, qipao is not counted as chinese or vietnamese traditional dress because it origins from manchu.

AO NGU THAN does not look anything chinese & the round flat hats (the size of a 30 inch car tires) that they wore with the outfits. The modern day conical hats that you see people wear with AO DAI also evolved from those flat hats back in the days. Actually Concial hats are universial in East Asia. It isn't only vietnamese who had those. The only historical reference for AO NGU THAN is that it dates back from 19th century and onwards. Unless, you can prove me wrong with reference.

ao dai definately hugs the women curves more. The material is also very thin and soft. Kimono and Hanbok are kind of i dont know they seem thick. I guess because they live in colder weather. qipao...i am being neutral on this. qipao and ao dai are the prettiest...but ao dai seems more modern as qipao supposed to be more traditional.

The reason i dont like Ao Dai , i think it's because it feels restricted.
For example Qi Pao gives me the impression of KungFu and Acrobatic. Very cool.
And...i prefer Yukata(Summer) for japan than kimono because of lesser frabic and flexible.
I dont know about hanbok , really. I dont like it at all.

I like Chinese HanFu and Kimono. Qipao is wearable only if you've a perfect face or else it wont go well.
Vietnam Aodai is like a hybird of Malay religious thing that women wears combine with Qipao. It got the conversative look there. I dont quite like it.
my choice is
1)Kimono (Japanese)
2)Hanfu or Qipao (Chinese)
3)Hanbok (Korean)
4)Aodai (Vietnam)

Ao dai can be BOTH traditional and modern. That's the advantage of it. ^_^ It's traditional in its gracefulness and femininity, yet it's modern in its convenience, practicality, and fitness into today's society.
The ancient áo dài (or whatever term it was called) worn by Vietnamese royal women from the 10th to 17th century was beautiful too. It was worn with skirt with a slash or belt at waist and a long overcoat. Too bad no one is reviving it.
