  • 1st guy

    - liar confidence smile and raised brows gave him away

    2nd guy

    - liar faces the liar attitude of can't wait to tell the lie and be safe

    3rd guy

    - as mentioned by many, not looking into derren eyes when lying

  • I think he knew the last guy lied because at the first fact (the lie), he didn't look at derren. for the other 2 facts, he looked at derren after "thinking"" the facts

  • Derren can't tell when chuck Norris tell lies

  • @2auhsoj2 Chuck Norris can't tell when Chuck Norris lies but he knows when Derren lies

  • notice that false facts was: 3 then 2 and then 1. pure logistic?

  • DAMN LOW TALKERS

  • fascinating

  • Hahaha that was awesome. This guy is pure entertainment, I love it. I also love that he doesn't bullshit people by saying he has "pyschic powers" just to make more money or fame either.

  • .... git mah gyun!

  • Comment removed

  • with the last guy you could see that the guy didn't actually look back at Derren when he thought of fact number 1.

  • @sinistergazII yeah, but it would be impossible to know it was about the engine. Which is why I think it was set up

  • @entehrend The engine is the easiest thing to lie about, and is also the part of the car that is most commonly lied about. Anything else can easily be seen.

  • what a piloe of crap program, I feel for that shows first episoedes but knew directly after it was just faked just like, blaine and the idiot chris angel

  • For the last guy, on the first fact, he did not look Derren in the eye after he thought, he continued to avert his eyes from Derren and stared at, probably what would be the engine of the car. For the next two facts, he continued to stare at the engine, but because these were facts he had in his head, he did not need to look at the individual parts to think of them.

  • Derren Brown is the real life Cal Lightman

  • they have been mindfucked :P

  • that guy doing all the talking has an annoying accent

  • I call hacks

  • Ha ha the first guy told the lies to well, so derren brown wasn't able to figure it out until after when he checked both against his reactions.

  • the third guy's eyes especially gave him away. eyes moved towards certain side when brain's processing mathematics/number. easy to deduct after that he was thinking about the "engine" which is pretty broad if you think about it. could mean anything from horsepower to mileage.

  • Imagine if this guy was your dad

Derren: What time did you get home

    You: 11

    Derren: ಠ_ಠ

    You: 1am...

  • @jeenyus720

dude that was a good post. one of the best i've seen lol. seen that unicode though but well done.

  • wtf?

  • If the cameras weren't there Diego would of pulled out the bat.

  • Them: "Sweet ride, is it a v8?"

    Me: "Pretty much ^_^"

    haha wtf

  • I somehow understand how he knew its something got to do with numbers

(the guy had the calculating look and he was taking a longer time to confirm 'fact' no. 1 compared to 2 and 3, hence the lie since i imagine the salesmen to know the facts at the back of their head thus changing the truth and thinking what fact to change would take a slightly longer time compared to the facts they already knew at their fingertips. )

but where the heck did the engine part comes from?

  • how did he know it had to do w/ numbers and the engine?

  • Or the 1st guy already said its an 8 cylinder! WTF???

  • @M802k All three cars were different.

  • part he gave to hem.... part the gave to him...

he uses his suggestion to get his will

but also reads the body language

    impressive work !

  • Edu Manzano

  • In Soviet Russia we trick Derren Brown

  • Darren has so many sublimital context in his speech and speaks so quickly ... look, as he speaks to you directly at the very begining :) 4 ex. in the episode ,,Paying with paper,, he tells us quickly: ,,Its hard to beleave, but in America Im not the massive and lovable star you know me as here,, ...speaks for itself... check out the very begining of this part, as he speaks to you ;) njoy

  • Nah even if he guessed it would be more of a 33% correct rather then 25% correct cause of defense mechanisms. Your mind would automatically make 1st statement true

  • I think the reason for Derren's catch on the last guy was his lack of eye contact. If you'll notice in 2 and 3, he nods his head, as he does in number one, but then looks at him quickly afterwards. He doesn't do that in number one, probably on a subconscious notion that avoiding eye contact will make it more inconspicuous - but that's what gives it away.

  • @HMachProductions actually, when its serious lies, people make more eye contact, also watch his corners of his mouth, it doesn't move while he thinks of fact 1, for fact 2 and 3 it very quickly semi-smiles.

  • Did I think I heard him say I want you to think (engine) each thing in your head. Anyone else? I heard phonological dissonance.

  • Its simple to determine, no matter if someone says a lie out loud or in their head, their pupils dilate as a reaction to it.

  • Well I was actually praising his skill too so there is no argument.

However to address your statement- "THEY consider it cheating them out of something"; someone's arbitrary claim to being cheated is not evidence of it nor is the accused responsible to prove otherwise beyond the mutual trust required in maintaining a business relationship.

  • It's pretty much an 8 cylinder l0l0l. It either is or it isn't not pretty much haha

  • This one is real for sure

  • who needs patrick jane when your've got darren brown

  • It's pretty much an 8 cylinder ... lol?!?!?!

It either is or isn't, and even a monkey know that a compact car like that is an 8 cylinder, they're all 4 cylinder cars.

  • second guy: knew the routine, he was thinking of a lie the entire time, and threw it in with a pause... pretty easy

Third Guy: Fact 1 was the lie... right after he said fact 1, he refused to make eye contact... he was probably feeling guilty. After fact 2 and 3, he made eye contact, showing confidence. Derrin jumped in early but he probably picked up on many little things I missed.

Note: all three salesmen were good, they didnt look around searching for a lie, they kept focus.

  • @oaney i agree

  • first guy: fact 3 he blinked the same as when derrin says 'lie' while describing the routine... he heard the word lie, reacted a certain way... and then reacted the same way when he was trying to lie. ALSO!!! "fact number three, pretty much... that its... *raises eyebrows* an eight cylinder" fact 3 was the only time he raises his eyebrows, classic tell. Fact 4 was full of blinks, but eyebrows were steady, blinks probably due to the recent lie, and then being put on the spot for one more truth.

  • didn't they all lie about the engines? Just a strange thought.....

  • He could make fortune playing professional poker

  • @NZbroncos actually, he is banned from Gambling, WORLDWIDE!! lols

  • @NZbroncos He has been banned from most casinos. I'm sure he has enough money from his "brand" rather than have to obtain it by cheating people. He actually seems very ethical even though he makes his money by exploiting an unethical profession. lol

  • @njdtm1971 How is he 'cheating people' if reading faces and body language is part of the game?

That's like saying I should be banned from football because I throw the ball too accurately.

  • @dreadrocksean I don't consider it "cheating people" personally. I think he is amazing, and I study NLP myself, but to people or companies he is getting money from by using these skills THEY consider it cheating them out of something. I agree with you that he just has a heads up, and is better at what he does than what they do, and that gives him the advantage. That's a good thing in my opinion.

  • I GUESS ITS INFOWARSoCOM RELATED

  • i think he "knew" it was fact #1 b/c statistically speaking it should have been.

he goes through three guys and demonstrates the entire procedure each time on each person....by the third time, the third person knows what to expect and therefore A) already has at least one lie on hand and B) has the lie on hand before having the truth on hand about w/e the subject material is.

although im sure some of this guy's stuff is bogus, a la criss asshole, most of it is straight psychology and such

  • He knew it was fact number one, cause he didn't look at derren........ =[

  • I must say this. Fact #1, Derren is very good judging people on slight body language. Fact #2, I want to kill Derren. I watched 12 hours of him and very very tire. I don't know how to stop watching this. I am soooo tired. :)

  • lol people are bad liers lol but we do move a lot

  • I just watched this video for 3 times but I notice something, look at derren brown's finger when he says "number 1", he uses his thumb (subliminally means right) and the "number two" he uses his thumb and his index finger (subliminally means correct or check".

I hope this help to figure how derren manipulates this 3 guys. : )

  • well the first two guys both said the cars were 8 cylinders. no way either of those cars had 8 cylinders lol. I could have gotten both of those right!

  • i only got the first one right cause i learned people generally tend to pad lies behind at least 2 facts so it had to be the 3rd or 4th one and i guessed 3rd

the second one i didnt get even though Brown makes it sound so obvious

and the third one i thought was gonna lie on the 4th cause the first lied on the 3rd and the seond lied on the 2nd but i was wrong

  • that guy can make me buy a bag of shit :D

  • Darren was looking for the minor gestures between the 4 answers. The first and 3rd guy had different gestures when they were lying. The 2nd kid just jumped straight to the lie in his 2nd thing cuz he was REALLY thinking about it.. and he couldn't wait to say it... thus he jumped the gun and gave the clue!

  • Mmm.. the 3rd car salesman with goatee is cute!! :)

  • You can find out if the guy is lying if his one gesture or movement is different from all the others. You can also determine that he is telling the truth if he overreacts like the second guy on fact #4. People who overdo it try to make other people THINK they are lying, when they are actually telling the truth.

  • While I don't believe everything in his shows, I appreciate him because he gets me thinking. Sure it's easy for me to say "This is all faked crap" but I dont. I admire Derren Brown as a person might admire an author of a fictional book. You like their ideas, and the concepts put forward, and the way they present those concepts.

  • Everything he does can be easily faked...

  • @KaLNFoRc3R watch some of his live stage shows then, such as Something Wicked This Way Comes, then explain how he easily fakes all of it.

  • The last guy was also obvious. When he says the first fact he does not look at Derren (because he is hiding), after saying the second fact he looks at Derren, after saying the third fact he also looks at Derren, he would probably also look at Derren after saying the last fact.

  • Micheal, The big guy, He looks like the Beast from beauty and the Beast. :D

  • If anyone wants to discuss these techniques feel free to contact me on my channel and post any comments or questions you might have.

I also accept all friend invites :)

  • @LightningAndRain could you tell me more about exactly what is going on?

  • is he like david blaine?

  • @Law19157 no this guy is far better and cooler then david blaine....Imagine david blaine in a coffin with Derren Brown standing over it Victorious.....thats the comparison

  • @Law19157 david blaine does magic tricks.

    Derren Brown does mind tricks/hypnotism.

One is making people look where you want them to look through "smoke and mirrors".

The other is being mindfucked using psychological knowledge.

  • @Rweeblington mindfucked such a bad term hes basiclly using a very natural thing in evry human being and gets paid a bunch i would imagine could you?

  • the first guy was an easyish read i thought... picking up on ideas of what he was thinking... now thats something interest

  • I'd love a bologna & cheese sandwich right now.

  • @crankylifter I'll have a meatball sub, please. Extra cheese. Thanks dude.

  • 1st one he stared straight ahead and gulped. in poker, someone staring at you is often bluffing, and gulping is a sign of fear.

  • cold reading and body language reading

  • its very easy to explain the last guy. out of the 3 'facts' he thought of, only when he thought the first one did he NOT make eye contact with derren after saying 'OK'. as for guessing whether it was something to do with the engine, well the previous 2 guys were both lying about the engine too, specifically the cylinders, just like Derren suggested this guy was even though it was about capacity.

Still like Derren but this one aint that fascinating.

  • Darren Brown should go buy a car. When a car dealer tries to scam him, he'll see it and go, "That's a lie."

  • If anyone wants to discuss these techniques feel free to contact me on my channel and post any comments or questions you might have.

I also accept all friend invites :)

  • @LightningAndRain Yeah, I'm confused, how on earth does he do that? explain please.

  • @sfgox10 Body language :)

  • i got 2 out of 3 right :D

  • Lie detection is something you can train, however for an average civilian they can only spot lying 50% of the time, even the ones who claim they are very good at lie detection.

  • just watch "lie to me" ;) then you know the truth ;) it could be quite easy to learn when someone didn't tell you the truth ;)

  • thats right, everthing he guess, because the person in front of you shows reactions for a certain seconds of time, just watch "lie to me" and then you can lean it by yourself ;) trust me, it is very easy to see when someone didn't tell you the truth ;)

  • It's called a 'read' and you can tell when someone is lying.

  • FAIL

  • Maybe its not the reason but the last guy didn't nod on the lie but did on the two last one?

  • why is youtube so....SHIT???? It cannot even play the video without stopping to buffer ever 4 seconds. Shame on youtube...the twats! I have to download it to enable undisturbed viewing.

  • #1 he didnt lookat him in the eye and didnt nod his head, but but did in 2 and 3

  • ooh, wow, i learned something else from him ^_^ you can see in a persons eyes when he switches from the right and left side of brrain, thats why he knew he was thinking numbers :D

  • who didint know it wasnt 3.

  • that last guy lied on #1 because he wouldn't look at him after saying it in his head, but after #'s 2 and 3 his eyes looked at Darren.

  • I don't know anything about NLP or suggestability, but I do know body language - because I have an interest in poker. Notice how Derren gets each of them to answer yes (truthful) to questions before they even get to the 4 facts. This is like a "control" response, similar to how people operate a lie detector. I think he then uses this "control" response, and factors in eye movement, top lip, breathing, tone, speed and general body language, to weed out which 1 of the 4 facts is a porky.

  • I too haven't studied NLPin detail, but knowing that DB has studied it, I can see how his attention to facial detail comes out in his art - for example his portraits of Clint Eastwood, Orson Wells and other celebrities. He emphasizes and exagerates the unique details in people's faces.

  • @Tehui1974 Pick up "Instant Rapport" by Michael Brooks. Its the most unique work written for the general population on NLP. Read it thoroughly, then test the material on people in your world. the results may prove interesting. good luck, friend.

  • @Tehui1974 i dont think thats the case since he only asks one question to the three of them at once making it hard to notice all body signs of each of them.

also the first question made them focus on the arrogance not the truth

u act differently when telling the truth and when someone said something pretty rude

  • this is something that i feel most people could do if they took the time to actually look at people while they were being spoken to. sadly most people don't do this

  • @youngobes it takes a lot of experience to know what to look for

  • Comment removed

  • haha i wish i had a lil skillz like derren, i'd hypnotise a dealer to giv me a car for 1 pound or dollar xD

  • you cant hypnotise someone if they dont want to be hypnotised. Its not how it works. You cant just walk up to someone and mind control them. Hypnotism is suggestion. Everyone is suggestible but not always to the same thing. Thats why sometimes these things dont work

  • like that. but the most interesting thing are these "salesmen". They look like some figures out of "The Soranos". "He buddy, wot? Ya dont like my car? I ll break ya leg if ya dont buy it."

Well Derren had luck that the cameraman was with him AND that it was daylight...."WOT? Ya say to me that I am lying...buddy, nobody tells Eddie he is lying..."

  • LOL!

  • derren brown does rock, he is one of the greatest of all times in his field and the best of it, he doesn;t pretend to have any psychic powers like that Uri Geller charlatan(the one with the bending spoons from the 70s). He always says what he does are tricks...

  • man this guy rocks!!! I really wanna learn something about subthreshold not sure if its how its called in english if anyone knows what i mean and where to find something about it please respond

  • interesting information

  • Oh come on, 8 cylinder? that one? why doesn't he just say it has wings?

  • many cars have wings. well, they have one wing.

  • the last dude didnt look at derren when he thought about the answer but in fact 2 and fact 3 he looked up at derren

  • yep, this is the only one i figured out

  • LMAO!

salesman 3 at 2:20 has exactly the smiley face XD

    GHAHAH

  • its basic nlp

and when ppl have to remember something they look to one corner of their eye and when they are constructin something (ex. making up a number)

they look to another corner of their eye

  • thats true, but not at all used in this clip. What you are referencing only occurs when you are visualizing an image, not thinking words (unless you visualize the word typed. Also, that NLP has to do with recalling a memory or constructing an image youve never seen, very different from this, which is just body language

  • that last guy looks so sweet. like a gentle giant

  • @theflyingmadcap That's how he gets ya

  • People should read some of his stuff or listen to his audiobooks, maybe even learn some basic NLP techniques before saying this guy is anything but a genius. Elegant, sophistocated, intelligent, man! Those who'd like to say anything less should go on his show and DISAPPEAR NOW! Derren, you da man!

  • hey, if you have time, can you explain to me exactly what this man is doing? is it some kind of science, art, or what? i really wanna know, its amazing!

  • @bj2point0 That's right!!! Like those lazyasses know something else than to post sceptic comments :)

  • @bj2point0 I don't want to listen to that command... -_-... :D

  • @bj2point0 i have trick of the mind but do you know where i could find the audio books at? (ugg this was posted 10mo ago lol)

  • @bj2point0 well could u help me learn nlp?

  • @superduperpooper7 Look up NLP, or Neuro linguistic programming. You can also look up "eye catalepsy" to learn more about body language, and how to read people. I have been practicing NLP as a sales technique for years. It's also helpful as a training tool at customer service seminars for sales employees.

  • @superduperpooper7 nlpteacher, com its a very new site with some help full stuff, its will be offering free info on nlp from basic to advanced, when its finished.

  • its not fake its common sense...

  • Im not saying all of his videos are real but is lie detection really that far fetched? Police hire professional lie detectors and there are plenty of times where you yourself caught on to someone's lie. This man has just practiced doing that. And how about we refrain from using offensive words like retard. Thank you very much.

  • yes lie detection among professionals is very well figured out, but the way derren sets up the situation makes it a lot easyer to spot a lie.

in this video he has 3 truths to compare with one lie. He can compare the faceial gestures with the other statements, and he can use what is common knowledge about liing. Professionals have to figure out small liing parts within huge stories. Even derren has years of practise and even he'd have to study a person for hours to find a usual lie.

  • Derren Brown is truly impressive.

I have been watching many of his videos trying to pick up on his techniques and with this video i tried applying them myself. I too was able to predict these "lies". For the 1st he said pretty much about a specific detail(engine size) which doesnt fit. For the 2nd he jumped the gun. for the third if you watch carefully the only fact he doesnt look at derren in the eye for is the first. And it was about the engine because the 2 previous guys did too.

  • A lie is a creative process, takes more time to think. I think he just notices how much times it takes to think

  • no man, he goes WAY beyond that... not just looking at howmuch time he takes to say ok... lol

  • Why the hostility? It's not necessary, especially given that it is in fact real, interrogators, detectives, and other types of criminal investigators and even company consultants use these techniques all the time. If you knew or understood ANYTHING about people's psychological patterns at all, you'd be able to tell VERY easily that this is real.

Don't be so quick to be so hostile against something you don't understand and obviously know absolutely nothing about.

  • POKER

  • Someone probably already explained it, but it's not the eye contact that gave the third guy away - he looks with his eyes for prompting to proceed the next fact. On the first one he didn't give positive signs (he didn't nod), whereas 2 and 3 he did - big give away. Derren knows he was thinking about the engine and numbers because that was the last thing the 2nd guy who was tested ended with and hence the first thing in the next guy's mind.

  • true, the 3rd guy avoided eye contact on the first question which indicates guilt.

Derren should play the poker champions!!!

  • He used to gamble alot, but he doesn't anymore because it's not fair, and he got banned from some casinos.

  • I think with the last guy, Derren knew the lie by the look of the man's eyes. On the first response, the man kept looking forward. With the second and third response, the man looked at Derren after he was asked to say the answer in his mind. So the fact that the man didn't look at Derren on the first response gave it away as a lie. I'm just guessing ;]

  • i thought that too

but how could he have known it was about the engine?

  • Because the engine was the last thing the second guy talked about, meaning it would be planted in the last guy's mind.

  • i some how knew the last guy was gonna lie at one because the other 2 guys lied at 2 and 3, and darren was suspicious about 4 on the first guy, so the last guy didn't want to choose the same number. That's why darren told him to speak it in his head.... only a random theory :D

  • i just thought of that before i read the comments, i think its a natural thing, you hear 3-2 you instinctivly pick 1 to correspond with the counting down to zero.

  • everyone knows hyundais dont come in v-8's!! lol

  • >>>True enough. But the Hyundai dealership is across the street.

Derren is doing this experiment at some GM dealership.

  • HAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAH.

  • Derren always says people are predictable. I guess he knew it was going to be the first lie with the last guy because with the first guy it was the 3rd, then with the second guy the second lie... I don't know, I think there's a pattern and Derren knows it.

  • Actually, the solution is quite simple. He asks them to list 4 facts and lie about 1, not to make it harder for him, but to make it easier for him. He looks for subtle changes in the way the person answers or behaves when he answers, which indicate a lie. When the person is telling the truth on 3/4 of them, he gets an idea of how the person acts when telling the truth. Then he looks for the 1 time the person's behavior was different.

    No patterns, just simple observation.

  • "simple"? LMAO!!

  • Well I didn't think it was hard... its one of the most basic ways of determining deception. If you read up anywhere online on how to spot a lie, most of them will tell you to watch for base-line pattern changes (maybe not those exact words).

  • I think we all try to do that in our dealings with people, at some time or other. But to be spot on each and every time. as brown is, would be impossible for a normal person, who was only using the principles you describe. I suspect he has something else up his sleeve.

  • It only seems impossible because most people don't really tune themselves in and pay as much attention as he does. Short of having this clip "set up", there is no other feasible method that could be used to determine who they were lying on.

Plus, it makes perfect sense when you consider what he tells them to do (3 truths and a lie).

On the first or 2nd guy, he even tells him about the subtle differences the guy made when he mentioned the lie.

  • I may dissect how this deceit detection was accomplished (EXTREMELY well btw) and post scrutiny vid maybe.

  • I know how he did these!! This is so wickedly brilliant!! He knew it was the 2nd comment on the 2nd guy because he changed his EACs, for the 1st and 3rd comment he drew the comment from the right (our right, derren's right) and then drew the 2nd comment from the left. The lie is the aberration. BRILLIANT!!!!!! I'm improving in deceit detection which is very good!

  • Comment removed

  • Nice job--I'm jealous. I've got to learn more about this stuff.

  • lol. Thanks for the acknowledgement and reverification! I bet someone could have figured this out without even knowing about EACs and just careful, meticulous, sherlock holmes-like scrutiny of their visages and reactions.

  • I agree in my interpersonal communications class Chap. 6 is Non-Verbal Communication, there are many tips and such about how to tell people are lying and all sorts of unconsicous movements, altough that last one i doubt someone could get.

  • btw. EAC = Eye Accessing Cue. But i'm not into nlp anymore.

  • the last guy i knew it was the first one cause he didnt look derren straight in the eyes but with the other thoughts he did.

  • WOW ur a genius!

  • fuck you you asshole. mother fucker nobody told you to read it so fuck off.

  • how about chainlink your balls from a tree and then beat you like a pinata until all the adipose tissue oozes from the turnip you call a brain.

  • not too hard to see through these non-creative meatheads. but derren brown is awesome anyway though!

  • Tricky Bastards!!

  • wow! i got them all right, right alway too!

  • hahah awesome. do some and upload it.
