@dhollseed I'd recommend any first-time users to use the settings/knob-positions as displayed in the first few seconds of this video. And of course to have a short midi-sequence loop playing.
If anyone wants to hear more MS-404...I've just uploaded some audio from my first little play with it. Just type:
Mine has an intermittent short circuit in it somewhere. I've opened it, and can reproduce the short by pressing down on the top of one of the pots.
Terrible build, despite sounding ok. I am currently patching the internals to an outboard for extra mod patch points. Hopefully along the way I'll track down the source of the short.
From today,.. MS 404 is my new partner :)

i have a ms404 knobs on mine. bad got them changed to a better type they are now great . very cool unit .
