Many people follow an old rule of thumb that your swap partition should be twice the size of your main system RAM. This rule is nonsense. On a modern system, that's a LOT of swap, most people prefer that their systems never swap. You don't want your system to ever run out of RAM+swap, but you usually would rather have enough RAM in the system so it doesn't need to swap.

I'll be using my Mac to download the image because I'll be building my first linux box for home use. Plus, some Windows users want to learn how to dual boot. Nixie's audience shouldn't be just preaching the choir. But also informing Windows users who only have that one OS.

I have recently a little bit of trouble. I am willing to install a distro on some logical windows created drive of my internal hard drive. But neither of my Linuces does recognize more than my internal hard drive itself. Even my Gparted USB stick doesn't show any partitions that I have created on it using the windows disk management. I have both seven and vista each on different drives.

Not sure what setup you have but make sure that the space on your drive is not used up. You'll need unallocated space. There are lots of instructions on dual boot setups. Make sure you follow them or else you might accidentally delete a partition that Windows needs (fat32/NTFS).

@EeeScape Thank you. I keep my Vista OS on the C partition. My comp was bought with two partitions C vista and f data. Now I have carved out of f data a 90 gigs extended partition where I installed a W7 on a logical drive and I created 3 other logical drives...

It is interesting that when I booted from my G-Parted USB stick it saw the whole internal hard-drive as unallocated space...I fear I might havetouse WUBI and resign to reamining superficial.I hope my HDD1 (internal HDD) is not screwed up.

@jadonSteve if you download linux but then need windows 7 back, all you need to do is contact Microsoft and tell them your windows7 product ID is, message me back if you need more info on finding it. its usually on the bottom of laptops with a Microsoft logo and everything

@jadonSteve Dual boot dude. Just shrink the volume of your Windows 7 partition down so you have another one for linux, and then install linux onto that one. Then you have 2 which you can choose from when you start your computer :D

That's what I do with my laptop since I need Windows on occasion.

@electrictroy2010 Just put the CD in, restart the computer (or turn it on if it was off), and choose to boot from the disc drive. Right as the computer starts up it should tell you what to click to access the boot menu.

@stargate455 You should try something very basic. Maybe something like Arch (Which I use), Fedora, or some other lightweight Distro. As a GUI you should try LXDE, OpenBox .. maybe even Enlightenment, but I think that this old machine won't handle it. I think the best advice would be to google something like "linux old hardware" and play around with it. It might take a while until you have a decent solution but if you like tinkering around it will be worth it ;)

@CulturalMyths - Okay, the software compatibility I can understand (though everything I used on Windows I can just as easily run on WINE), but you seriously have to be using some odd USB hardware for it to not work in Ubuntu. All the drivers are already there.
