This guy is so arrogant. I do not think he has addressed the topic well. I was thinking he will bring up new points/ methodolgies in this video. Certainly ... NO, done it very bad.
LOL ........... I love this guy, just reminds me on how arrogant you have to be sometimes to be a good tester, and take sooo much shit everyday to be good at it ..... Fellas this is how QA is done in the USA (don't want to say America), it is very ad hoc, but in general terms we optimized this ad hoc process, testing is far away from a Science but hey there is so many professions out there that were just derived from others that dont have anything to do with it !!!!!
He does make one very valuable statement: 'build and protect your reputation'. Very important. Damn, I think I am going to start blabbering and write a book. My eyes are getting too bad for testing anyway!
He does make one very valuable statement: 'reputation is key'. Damn, I think I am going to start blabbering and write a book. My eyes are getting too bad for testing anyway!
I am kind of impressed with what he said. You get 100 different blogs saying what to test and how to test. But James is unique he tells you different things.. He was kind correct when he said testing is not cheap job which is going to some geography and he's thought about testing to design your own methodology was great! There are many things we can learn from this person. I agree he is some what arrogant in the start but he is a perfect example for out of box thinking..not like any other
I think he just got lucky at find a bunch of bugs. He Sucks. This is the kind of thinking the people I currently work with do not share any information or even write a Test Case or Test Plan.
Man what a load of SHIT! The only thing this guy is good at sounding like an expert by talking shit.. he has people sucked into this geekness and they are inclined to just agreeing with him.. you know why.. he already told you... THERE IS NO AUTHORITY IN THIS FIELD.. Anyone who is a tester, can do this, just need a loud voice and hyper tension :)
Horrible lecture self-centered and poor jokes. Why are you talking about your diploma ? We are suppose to learn about testing, not about your favorite food or a quote of you in any book. Maybe you are a great tester but certainly a amazing poor teacher. I'm just amazed that a such video is upload in a google account. May be i should try too.
Although, it is written in slides that you should say "defect" instead of "bug", he insistenly uses BUG during the talk.
I have read bunch of books and listened that many talks; no one ever brags himself as much as he does - yes in the preface of his book he brags how he left the school and imply students to do the same, so that people can learn just by doing without school. So Bach, I want to be a doctor by following your advices and would you be my first patient?
I participated in a 3 day consultation that James Bach conducted at Motorola several years ago which was fantastic. I think it is pretty difficult to cover this topic at a high level in 1 hour and I think that may be the source of some negative comments to this video. At the 3 day consultation, I was extremely impressed with James Bach's ability to describe all of the various aspects of testing including being given actual testing problems to solve. I benefited greatly from it!
i will admit that there are lots of opportunities to use specific examples which the presenter missed completely; it was as if he was deliberately keeping the talk a bit on the vague side; instead of how to be a software testing expert, i would have preferred some concrete examples of software testing gotchas and how to avoid them :-)
Process people unleash heuristic.. friendly dog becomes mean and everybody following it strictly..
so true, so true...
But, I must say, for a whole frickin hour, he did drag it out. Should have been like 10min. Too much time belittling audience.. we get it - its not textbook cut-dry simple. MOVE ON>
Wow, I am very disappointed in this seminar. I was told that this guy was the "King" of software testing. He's a jerk. I do like his rapid software testing methodology, however. That's just one type of specialized testing, though, which is performed under extreme time constraints and low resources. In my opinion, it all comes down to this: All software is meant to perform some function. To test effectively, first unit test the code, then positive test the GUI. Lastly, negative test the app.
Without trying to be offensive, the standards are to get a certification.
Just because your experience is more profound than a judge or lawyer's (whose expertise is in civil law) does not imply that your superiority is above and beyond the industry norm.
Even if you weren't certified, I would be more impressed with a membership in ASQ. Even the most "elite" belong to their respective societies/organizations; and certs are an industry specific standard. Are you really above industry standards?
I just dont feel too agreeable about this Talk. How come a man that does not have any Upper level education will come to anyone that has been tested in an Academic Setting and say that he is an authority?
First of all, James...Get a degree, Test your knowledge against others in a University, stop being so arrogant...and stop giving talks about things you dont have a clue about...better, Become a Motivational speaker for depressed Housewives, you will do better in there. Get a Degree, BUM!!!
Don't be such a moron. Just because someone has a piece of paper to say they sat in class and followed a prescribed system doesn't mean THEY are an expert. There are many degree holders that are completely incompetent at their choosen career. Original thinking is what makes advances. Why don't you try telling people Newton and Einstein were wrong too, as far as I remember they didn't have higher education or degrees. Idiot.
Horrible lecture or whatever this is... firstly the guy never explains anything, secondly he just keeps shifting from one topic to another.. Thirdly he just keeps boasting about himself.. Seems like he is talking to recruiters to hire him!!! One thing i dont know if he is a Testing Expert (which i doubt, after he continuously telling like he is doubtful) But certainly he is not a good mentor or a teacher.. And he is certainly a bad person to explain something to a crowd!!
The thing with James is you never feel he's telling you the answers, to whatever problem you might be looking for him to answer, or exactly how to go about testing.
He leaves it open to you to take on what he's saying, agree or not, draw on your own experience and come up with 'your' way. Even in his books it's the same.
This guy is so arrogant. He does not talk about testing but only about himself. I don't care what knowledge he has on his little terrain, an expert would not shout like that and treat his public as idiots. I could have spend this hour better than i did watching this video.
P.s. James, please look up the definition of cognitive science.
This presentation is in my opinion a complete philosophical lecture. It's mainly a egocentric view of his personal career and more a marketing demo or best case a kind of personal coaching. The value I got from the approx. 58 minutes invested for my testing job is minimal.
Thanks James and Google for making available a very informative presentation with good quality of recording. I am a validation guy and obviously impressed by James's knowlegebility and thinking.
As a candid criticism (James will like this!) would this presentation "crash" without so many "I", "my" and "me"s ?

Wow.
Unbelievable.
Annoying with a score of 10 out of 10.
I restarted the video; still annoying with a score of 10 out of 10.
There - measurable and repeatable.
I am now considered a Testing Expert.
I'll put that on my CV just below the PADI Rescue Diver certification.
