  • video games aren't art

  • watch?v=Rt0OFP1jLKw

  • I respect their artistic achievements but I find their arrogance on how their work is so much better than other developers to be insulting and their blowing up the creative process and acting as if they have got a direct line to real "art" to be preposterous. Indie gaming creation isn't some mystical experience.

  • pc siqueira² 2:00

  • Just kidding! yes they are!

  • Video games are not art

  • The trailer alone inspires me so much

  • Is there a approximately date for the digital release? Can't wait to see it :)

  • Edmund micmillan yeah

  • WHY CAN I STILL NOT BUY THIS!?!?!

  • I NEED THE SONG

  • I can't believe this movie STILL doesn't have a formal release date. I know it's going to have all kinds of festival screenings, but when are we the humble going to be able to see it?

  • Jim Guthrie is amazing.

  • I've watched the trailer so many times, but I really want to see the movie! :(

  • Don´t worry folks, not all indie developers are hipster tards, turst me.

  • @MsLeogro mnecraft.

  • M_ _ E C _ A _ T

  • Va a estar interesante esto =)

  • I've been watching this trailer like EVERY DAY since I found out about the movie, I want to become a game developer and working hard on it, every time I see this I just...I don't know it just motivates me. This is my passion, my goal, my dream...this guys are amazing examples to me! :D

  • @jose2090

I was going to say it, but you said everything already! :)

I'm currently learning C++ for the same reason and this video also motivates me a lot!

  • Manito arriba se Vardoc te trajo ;D

  • 0:14 I will quote this forever.

  • AND they got an excellent indie composer to do the music!?

  • Hey guys, I just saw the movie tonight in Winnipeg and it was absolutely fantastic. There was no hint of melodrama or pretention throughout, despite what some people predicted from the trailer. It was a really great, effective, touching an well-made film :). Standing ovation at the end was awesome

  • what s the name of this music... i need to find it in youtube!

  • Microst is so damn lucky to have this guys work on XBOX Live with the XNA (I think some of them do)....Jesus Christ Sony! create a fucking NDK for game development!

  • guys ive got one year left of bean able to make games if my current project fails i cant make games anymore please just visit my channel im not asking for a lot just please ive got 16 months after that if i dont finish this i dont know. please

  • @MSHaloFour you clearly like Halo. however something like this is interesting watching the creative process makes good entertainment. Also, it's so amazingly fun creating the game, especially when its just a small team. All these games are amazingly fun to play, and I think you shouldn't be so insensitive toward the dreams of others.

  • A movie about antisocial autistic manchildren!

Watch, as these people struggle to make a passable game, it's so heartwarming. If you'd even want to see a movie that focuses on the extremely diverse subject of nerds making only platformer games because they're too dumb/lazy to make anything more interesting than some guy jumping in 2 dimensions with 1 stupid gimmick that it somehow makes them think that their game is revolutionary. Great film guy, I'm sure it's going to be a huge hit.

  • @MSHaloFour Clearly, you have not played Braid.

  • @MSHaloFour Play Braid, Limbo, Bastion, and quit living in ignorance.

  • @MSHaloFour

You expect indie devs to be able to make anything other than a 2D game on their budgets?

  • @MSHaloFour Big companies everywhere (i'm looking at microsoft, activison and EA) care so much about the money that they are willing to kill the creative process just to save costs, meet crazy deadlines, and put money into their pockets). This is what making games used to be before it go controlled by the corporate world. Sure the AAA games have nice graphics, etc etc, but it's time to get back to the heart of game making, which is making people have fun without caring about money.

  • can't wait for this

  • First person to say video games aren't art gets shot in the face.

  • @NinjaFail96 With a lancer from Gears of War! :D

  • @NinjaFail96 Finally, I still have hope in humanity since I've found a person who thinks the same. :)

  • @NinjaFail96 Looking at you, Roger Ebert

  • super meat boy: best game this console generation.

  • Doing this on your own is so much different than doing it for company X.

  • 2:04 - 2:06

    The motto for every programmer.

  • @kekeke42789 what you mean by "motto"?

  • Dismiss the naysayers. This trailer, this concept... this is the artist's journey, the harrowing defeats, the frustration, the passion, the infusing of the soul into creating something. So beautiful, godbless you for showing this side of these artists. Beautifulbeautifulbeautiful.

  • @SuperBlackJesus321 What compels you to watch a trailer for a project like this if you only have hate to share? Spend less time trolling youtube comments (let's face it, dropping tired slurs and 'meter' calls means you're not all that good at this either) and go find a purpose.

  • Did one of these guys relate programming to a concentrating camp?

  • Why is Phil yelling "dammit" at the end?

  • HIPPPPPSTEEEERRSSS

  • I might appreciate the work that they put into making the games by themselves if they didn't fortify such an irritating stereotype of the creative hipster

  • I want to be a game developer myself, here in Colombia....you guys have no idea the effect the simple trailer has in me...my best wishes! :D

  • will there be a game about the movie? :)

  • The photograph of this movie is awesome, and the theme is great, most of this games have something that not many big game developers have now days, and is passion, is always the same old titles again and again like COD, Assassin´s Creed, Marvel vs Capcom, FIFA, at least the Indie developers are creating new and fresh ideas to improve and create something unique, so kudos for the Director and Producer to show the other side of the coin, i´m waiting to see this movie.

  • NERDS!!!

  • Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!, I want to be part of this!...

  • Interesting indeed.

But however, the view I now accept about indie developers is not about thier personal story, but the game they make. I feel the sudden rise in indie game development is only but harmful, because what is seen is "indie" slapped on alot of games, like "natural" is on a lot of things.

Reality is most indie games today is boring, because they dont enrich me at all. Sure you can find good ones, but many have horrible quality. They are just brain pillows.

  • I want to see this, but its being shown at Sundance on the days that I can't attend. D:

  • I have one question. Where the fuck is Notch? He created a super indie game and it completely blew up into a huge game

  • @assdan27 Based on the featuring of Braid and Fez quite prominently (~2007 and 2008 IGF entrants) I would imagine the concept and filming of this started a while before Minecraft became well known

  • it is a cool idea but honestly i dont want to see games like this, i can appreciate the work they do and it takes skill to make a game but i dont wanna see games like this. The game looks stupid and its nothing i would ever enjoy.

it would be awesome to have a reality show of big game devs making halo or battlefield or gears etc but this indie stuff isnt that interesting

  • @Crosbyisapimp I personally love simple, childish graphics in a puzzle style. And the idea of the big guys doing this is cool but it wouldn't be as bad if they failed because they have so much money to do it again.

  • are all game developers hipsters?

  • @SarkkiKarkki Only the indie ones.

  • @SarkkiKarkki Some, but if you look at say, Todd Howard, you'll see it can vary.

  • In complete agreement with nianicole824. There is a -lot- of work that goes into things like this. Designing everything from the ground up, coding, debugging, the time that goes into correcting even a minor error. Heck, even -locating- the source of an error can cost serious time.

  • Long live the Indie games! Long live Steam! Long live the PC!

  • to make an indie game it seems to just need to be as obnoxious as fuck basically

  • @danobaka You've clearly never played any of the games shown in this trailer. Well done.

  • @conor3806 i played them all before they got popular, eat shit

  • What's with the hating on here? Do you know how much coding, work, and time go into a game all by yourself? No? Then gtfo. (And believe me, if you don't know what you doing coding can be hell. *shudders*)

  • Coming soon: Men With Ugly Facial Hair: The Movie

  • T'as raté ta vie si tu ne fais pas un "Indie Game"... u_u

  • Hipster glasses: The Movie

  • Looks kinda awesome.

  • @shadowluma

I've never seen such a large amount of stupid compressed into a single comment.

  • I can't wait for this to come to DVD!

  • Fezzes are cool.

  • So deeep.. fucking pretentious idie game devs

  • I love game development....in fact Im studying to become a game developer :D I wanna show this trailer to my dad so bad but, well he doesn't too much English...does somebody knows if there's a version with spanish subs ? thanks

  • Wow - cannot believe some of the lame comments here. My guess is most people do not understand the movie is more than just about games - but about crazy passionate people (albeit maybe some on the socially awkward side) pouring themselves into creating their art. This is such an unique and creative subculture to explore this theme through. Hope you guys are going to screen in Toronto. I am even debating to make the trip out to Winnipeg to catch the debut there. Very nicely done - best of luck!

  • Hipsters who pass off half assed games as art: the movie

  • when and where can I see this movie?

  • is this going to be released in DVD?

  • the guy who says "look how antisocial I am" in an movie interview is a huge hypocrite, and they clearly try to make some conventional story arc out of disparate data (like reality tv) where 2/3 of the way through, just when it looks like they're going to fail they start to win. I'd rather see a documentary about the process of making a game, with less self-aggrandizement.

  • @ravenouscolonelhart Im unsure as to whether or not you actually know what the word hypocrite means. When a person says that he or she has poured their heart into a line of work in an attempt to communicate with people in the way that they know how, you don't have the right to demean their efforts by suggesting that its all just to create a "story-arc." These are real designers making real games and they are saying what they believe, not what they think will create the best plot.

  • Why was Phil yelling 'DAMMIT!' there?

  • murder all indie developers.

  • Awesome trailer for what looks like a fantastic movie. Will definitely be present at any Toronto-based events for this! Glad to see good representation of Canadian indie games scene here too.

  • Hello my name is Jonathan, I'm from Spain. I am very interested in your documentary about indie games. 2 months I've been stuck in this world and the truth is that there are great games, even better than, say "official." I admire you for the effort and commitment you are making every day. Here in Spain this indie gaming is not seen nothing and I would like people to know more about this great culture. By the way, you have release date of this documentary?. Thank you for your attention.

  • Finally a movie that can explain what I do, been trying it for years, maybe 1h30m of movie will do a better job :)

  • I just finished Braid today and I can't stop thinking about it... I wasn't sure about buying tickets to Sundance, but I will for this film

  • I like all the people in the comments who claim the movie is staged. :) It makes me laugh. They're just jealous that no one wants to make a movie about their boring lives.

    I can't wait for this! I can't wait for Sundance! <3 <3

  • I'm gunna throw up.

  • This is now my favorite movie haha iv always wanted to lean how games are made and well here's a depth look in people's lives on making one

    i hope you guys win

    thank you :)

  • I wanna make a game about little bearded men

  • "I'm like at a fucking concentration camp. If you can't get the work done then the past two years are basically worth nothing...no pressure." I cannot wait for this movie!

  • MOTHER FUCKING FEZ. COME OUT ALREADY

  • Y U NO MAKE NINTENDO GAME,BUT PUT A SNES CONTROLLER?!?

  • @TheLuigiadrian Completely valid question - one that we answer as best we can here over on the IndieGameTheMovie site, under a post called: 'Hanging Controllers, Looming Questions'

  • @TheLuigiadrian Because it's hard and expensive to reach that level. Indies are made with the less budget as possible.

  • All of those beards

All of those thick framed glasses

  • One shot with a chick in it... is that too much to ask?

  • @SHot70

Game development is sadly male dominated, though there are many females that work in the industry, they aren't the ones who normally get things off the ground.

  • cool movie, you guys should definately ask the crew at dreamhack if you can show it there!

  • 2:05

    >consoles

  • neckbeard the game

  • Platform Game: The Movie

  • Are they all played by the same actor?

  • I have a sudden urge for Starbucks

  • Indie games? Yarrr!

  • Artsy piece of shit

  • Movie looks like shit but holy crap that music is awesome

  • An indie movie about indie games?

    Indiception

  • hipster art student developing 2d retro indie game # 8453 the movie

  • You forgot the part where edward mcmillen curses out a customer because they found something wrong with his game.

  • Fez's are cool.

  • >yfw amateur beards or neckbeards

/v/ makes video games: The movie

  • Ahahaha, I thought this was a parody.

  • I watched this video before it was cool.

  • We really need more pretentious "artists" making games instead of people who actually understand the fundamentals of game design.

These people are the saviors of the industry.

  • Why are they all platformers?

  • @nikkisixxual Well, these people work by themselves. Making a 3D game would be really complicated and time-demanding. They'd need money to gain either the resources required or to hire help.

  • and...notch????

  • I want to see this.

  • when is this comming out?

  • I can't wait for This documentary!!!

I've been making games for myself and my friends for a long time and I really wanna become a successful Indie game developer, however If I ever catch myself saying I'M LIKE IN A F**KING CONCENTRATION CAMP!? I Will not only quit, But I'd also realize what a waste of life I am, fuck off and die by my own hand!!!

And also, SAYING YOU WANNA COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE AND THAT YOU DON'T WANNA MAKE FRIENDS IS LIKE SAYING "I WANNA PLAY CATCH BUT I DON'T WANNA GET CAUG

  • @dudel47 dude.. apparently you don't know anny thing about Edmund from Team Meat. he is crazy, but in a god way. you will se when the documentary realises. but you seem to be a bit crazy you too. but in a bad way lol.. killing your self when you hit a hard point in your game development.. thats sad..

  • funny how people say these guys are pretentious.. jealousy eh?

  • @Jordyjg Only the guy making Fez. "If this fails, I'll never work in video games again." What the fuck kinda shit is that to say? What a pussy.

  • @zurton Imagine if you dedicated half a decade of your life on a single project... You did your very best, it's your passion, and you suffered through development hell like none other because of it. Then after 5 years, you release it, and people tell you it sucks...

What would you do? A man gotta eat. If your very best isn't good enough, you have to reconsider your career choice. If you don't see what they're going through, then you simply haven't experienced what they're going through.

  • Too much hipster for me

  • Can't wait to see this!

  • What did he says on 2:26?

  • @JeffMartinsTM Phil's yelling 'DAMMIT!' there :)

  • @IndieGameTheMovie Hahahah lol!! I thougt he said: Just aim it! You guys are rlly an inspiration.

  • If this fails,

  • @luaudesigndf I will still make video games lool

  • @MrLukicIgor Haha that's very passionate man ^^

  • Now a 2012 Sundance Film nom., congrats guys!

  • @CescoPisicoli Thanks so much!

  • Bobby Kotick made 145 accounts and disliked this.

  • I wish this have been released around now, but I guess a subtitle like "Xth-place/Nominee in Sundance Indie Film Festival" or something would be nice to see in the finished product.

  • I should be waiting for the movie to be released, but I'm just constantly enthralled in this trailer with the music and the great quotes.

  • what is the name of the song?

    im f****** orgasmeado

  • @5301advirc fuckin orgasmeado XD!! muy buena esa

  • "I'm like in a concentration camp"

    dude. seriously?

  • @spaceblackhole Bear holy shit hope their not pedobears.

  • Sound?

  • fashionable nonconformity ruins this movie. as in stop the acting! it's as forced as annual cod sequels.

  • AWESOME SUNN O))) SHIRT!!!!!!
