Hi larry i watch alot of you videos and im thinking about buying an ultralight and upgrading it like you have but before i do im wondering about how much did it cost you. i am wanting to try to make a homemade jet turbine but before i do you should make one and put it on your ultralight. THANKS
Oh man, thats absolutely awesome! How much horsepower it have compares with automobile engine? Have it enough power for ultralight aircraft, similar to Piper Cub? (900lb MTOW) You have truth, that turbine sound is better, that any music, especially starting and shutdown. Have a fun with your flying machine. Tailwinds!
@LarryCanFly thanks for response, Larry, it is pretty enough power for my plane, now I have 80HP, but that consuption is not very attractive, but if it burns Jet A1, it will be good, because A1 costs 2/3 of automobile fuel.Once again thank you for the information. Have a nice flight and happy New Year! New Year will be here in 3 hours on my position :)
if i would ever want to make 1, i won't be able to fly it, i live too close to EHAM - Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, your not allowed to fly above 1000 feet around here AND NEED a registered plane with transmitter, that sux...
Larry, you are such a star - what would we do without 'pioneers' like you?? I can't do this stuff any more - it's great that someone does and above all shows us all what he (or she) does. Truck on my friend and stay safe! Jus t one thing - how about trying a scram jet next?
Yes, I actually designed it and my brother and I manufacture the Hall Airspeed Indicator. The first ones were sold in 1976. I have lost track of how many we have made. They are still in production and selling okay. They can be found on the Hall Wind Meter web site. We produced a few other products over the years, but the Hall Airspeed Indicator has always been our main product. I appreciate your enthusiastic remarks. Larry Hall
@quadruplane An honor to hear from you sir! The infamous Hall's ASI is a classic engineering work of art. It's a low cost light weight functional and accurate indispensable flight instrument. I'd love to know it's history, when was the first one produced and sold? How many have been made? Still in production? Still selling well? What other products did you produce? ... too many questions?
Sounds like my electric chain saw, long time till takeoff, thought it was a dunebuggy ride. Also, lose the bong up front, cops are always looking for pot pilots...
Neat Video Larry nice to see it fly and glad you didn't coverup your engine sound with music kinda ruins alotta vids because while its pretty you dont get that sensation or the engine roar and feel the plane really flying , any way glad to see and hear it fly :)
hi larry ,,,, this was awesome , im retired ,but everyone says i think like a youngen , this is my take on aircraft engines ,,,, they will all be (some day) turbine driven ,, turbines have less parts and are suited well for high rev applications ,,, worked for 15yrs with turbines ,,, very simple machines ,, cost is high because of the close tolerances,, but , if every motor was turbine it would bring cost down ,,,,, jet or prop , the turbine has the sweeeetest sound ever ,,
That's one of the coolest ASI's I've ever seen. Almost as good as the original wing strut mounted version on a Tiger Moth. What type of aircraft is it?
Very cool. I saw the length of the video and thought that I would end up fast forwarding through most of it, but not only did I stay to the end, but I rewatched several parts. The acceleration during take off is impressive. Well done! :D
@automateanything Same make and model of engine but the one on the Mosquito has been modified to run vertical. I was lucky to get 4 engines 10 years ago, 2 for parts and 2 for running.
Noise is one of a turbo prop but we need to have a look to believe it . Those engines arn't so cheap ; Hundred time the price of microlight for the turbo could be true.
@GEOFFROYX If you watched closely just before the second restart you would have seen the shadow from some smoke when the turbine flamed out for a couple secs.
why is this your only ultralight video? ive watched all the other ones and there all about the turbo copter. also is it illeagal to buzz the golfers? lol
@twistaj32 Helicopters are way more fun! Yes, FAR 103, =many rules, like: -cannot create a hazard to other persons or property. Can't fly over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons.
@Dominoes282 New today maybe $300K+. An old surplus one like mine, very rare. Similar engines like the JFS-100, surplus, have sold from $1K to $8K in the last few years.
Dude, absolutely sweet sound, with a noise like this I would go back into Ultralights (we call them Microlights in Ireland), let my Licence lapse a few years back, this noise is what it's all about, great video, good job, noise gives me a semi :D
@JohnyE007 It's really a bummer that the new LSA category specifically disallows a turbine engine! Fortunately the Ultralight Part-103 leaves us free in that area. Freedom is a great thing! I wish we had more of it! Heck, Ivo Zdarsk moved to the desert (41.36N, -113.84W). Wouldn't it be funny if we had to "escape" back to the CZ to fly free.
@JohnyE007 In the USA, an ultralight is 254 pounds, 1 seat, 5 gallons, 27mph stall, many more restrictions, but -- the ultra-Free part is: no license, no registration, any engine, basically they do not treat it as an aircraft at all. The FAA said if we self regulate and be good, they will leave us alone! GB103.
I hope we will have a LSA due to many restriction in our UL category which is not suitable for us today. The restrictions come from the days when the aircrafts were from pipe-and-cloth.
If I was in USA I would build and jet engine ultralight ! :-)
Kudos Larry and yes, that was a smoothly enjoyable and positively interesting turboprop flight. Just one complaint . . too short . . but thanks a bunch anyway Larry!

@Intiminator99 real runways were and still are, here, there, and everywhere, known as "dirt strips" sometimes called grass strips. As opposed to synthetic, prepared runways. Historially paved with macadem, was kinda how they started the synthetic ones, etc.....from an old pilot fading away. FYI yup, i flew turboprops,
That is just slicker than snot! How many gallons does it carry? That has got to be the most vibration free Ultralight ever. Kudos on the vision and execution. This might be the next big thing in Ultralights.
@av8rdav The airframe is a Eipper GT-400. I crashed it into the forest and broke the wings so replaced them with very cool wood wings from a Hi-Max and the engine with a turbine and was back in the air in less than 5 years!
@IronfistedPriest 254 pounds is the weight limit for ALL ultralights in the USA, per Part 103, also, only 5 gallons, stall 27 or less, and lots of other things, but if you meet the requirements you can be FREE and you can FLY!
@marc1bb Hide it? No, ... checkout my other video named: Larry's gas turbine jet engine turboprop ultralight, ... it's a video response. Shows most everything except the very cool wood wings I adapted from a HiMax (version of Team Mini-Max)
@95090978 JFS-100's sell for from $3k to $6k. The one's I have are very rare - and so are priceless:-)) Pure thrust only, not much, but as a turboprop I'm getting over 300 pounds static.
nice
but can't we have a look at your aircraft ?…

we have still an Ultralight category (up to 450 kg) in CZ, but we can use only piston engines :(
and I hope we get the LSA category in 2012
JohnyE007 1 year ago
Wow, 900 pounds, ... 2 seats? Top speed?
Do you have to register it?
Do you need a license to fly it?
LarryCanFly 1 year ago
@LarryCanFly
yes you need to have a licence for that (about 20 hrs in flight training) and every aircraft has to be registred (as for example OK-JUR11)
all ULL in CZ must have max. stall-speed 65km/h (about 35 kts), today usually a factory made Utralight has a cruise speed about 110kts
for one seat-ultralight there's a restriction about 230kg
I don't know u have still ultralights only for one seat!

@JohnyE007 In the USA, an ultralight is 254 pounds, 1 seat, 5 gallons, 27mph stall, many more restrictions, but -- the ultra-Free part is: no license, no registration, any engine, basically they do not treat it as an aircraft at all. @av8rdav The airframe is a Eipper GT-400. I crashed it into the forest and broke the wings so replaced them with very cool wood wings from a Hi-Max and the engine with a turbine and was back in the air in less than 5 years!

love the air speed indicator, its fantastic
gumby1008 1 year ago
@gumby1008 It's a Hall wind meter. Very common basic airspeed indicator for ultralights.

whats the weight limit on most ultralights? or do u just make it bigger and get a better engine until it can carry ya?
IronfistedPriest 1 year ago
@IronfistedPriest 254 pounds is the weight limit for ALL ultralights in the USA, per Part 103, also, only 5 gallons, stall 27 or less, and lots of other things, but if you meet the requirements you can be FREE and you can FLY!

Awsome - I hate my Rotax engine noise.....
roswold 1 year ago
it seems like you flew hanging from a pole that was holding the airspeed pole. that is magic...or are u trying to hide the ultralite?
marc1bb 1 year ago
@marc1bb Hide it? No, ... checkout my other video named: Larry's gas turbine jet engine turboprop ultralight, ... it's a video response. Shows most everything except the very cool wood wings I adapted from a HiMax (version of Team Mini-Max)

This is awesome! I love the sound of the turbine starting. Much more pleasant sound than the Rotax screaming!

how much would one of these jets cost? how much thrust they give off?
95090978 1 year ago
@95090978 JFS-100's sell for from $3k to $6k. The one's I have are very rare - and so are priceless:-)) Pure thrust only, not much, but as a turboprop I'm getting over 300 pounds static.

Sounds amazing on landing....so peaceful when compared to a cranky piston engine. Love the annotations too.

@LarryCanFly "it all sucks. I would not do it except for one thing, it sure is fun!:-)"
Not everything, it sure sounds 100x better than the buzzy piston. Good luck and stay safe with your coptering around larry!
