Lawrence Durrell in a letter to Henry Miller circa 1946: The egoismus cult is very bad for young men. You should know you've had a wicked effect yourself on the young in England. They think if they splash about in the bath it's interesting because it's THEM. Little do they realize what practice & technique and elision goes into making your free-and-easy effect. Rollins may be an affable guy and unpretentious but there are those whose ears should be ringing viz. the above oracle. DM
Addendum to the Lawrence Durrell letter re. the two Henry(s) - There should be quotes around Durrell's words starting right after 1946: "The egoismus. . . and ending the word - "effect" There was a new paragraph starting with the next sentence: Rollins may be. . . All jumbled together it's a bit incoherent, Sorry for any frustration - such are the limitations of written you tube communications.

@itierney Weird comment, any time I've seen Henry Rollins interviewed he always stresses his own lack of education and intellect, by his own admission his only talents are working hard and being good at talking, if you think he is saying he is an intellectual because he reads Henry Miller you are only betraying your own insecurities
@horsedoctorman I've seen so many interview where he's quoting nietzsche or spouting crap poetry or whatever. He's always at pains to let you know he's an "intellectual".
@itierney Oh so what if he quotes Nietzsche, all it means is he reads books. Rollins is excited by books and thinks they're important. What's wrong with that? There are lots of Rollins interviews on Youtube, I think I've watched most of them, and I've never seen him call himself an intellectual. Could you show me a vid where he does this?
henry rollins is the biggest hypocrit in americian history. he doesn't know the first thing about henry miller. how can you be a henry miller fan and be for more taxes at the same time. henry rollins is proof that any dip shit with a tattoo can start a following.
@madeguy89 I know its a month old, but you commented on a henry rollins/henry miller video saying henry rollins was a hypocrite (you misspelled it as hypocrit). Henry Miller leaned more towards socialism, though at the point where he was writing his masterpieces, he held no political affiliation. Rather, he commented on the social consciousness collectively, in spiritual terms. SO, it would seem to be that YOU are the one who doesn't know the 'first thing about henry miller.'
Rollins has turned me onto alot of really good things like henry miller and verner herzog and dostoyevski and john coltrane. When you live in a backwater rural village with small minded farmers and you feel, like I do, different and thirsty for something more than the local library stocks of 'I was a mutilated baby boy kept in a box' abuse stories and serial killer biographies et al. Its pretty fucking cool to have a guy like rollins around who you trust to reccomend you good stuff.
@knoxlobster He as well turned me onto Henry Miller, Albert Camus, Dostovesky, and many others. The part about living in a backwards conservative town with the library filled with bored housewife romance novels, teen self esteem books, and books about AA and NA, you want something that goes beyond the mediocre, mundane, and contrived. I relate as well. When the only thing that awaits you is phosphate mines, unemployment, and drug addiction, Henry is the guy that educates and inspires you.
@GoblinGirl Well Rollins has achieved great things also but with music that matter to alot of people just as Miller's writings and books obviously matter to you. Miller and Rollins dont need your opinion, good or bad. Next time you call someone "ok" show them some more respect because from where your siitting...it looks as though you need to appreciate someone who actually got off their ass and did something with their life. Never is this "ok", its exceptional. Unlike your critique GoblinGirl.
:) you know he s read a great many books. Not such much a moron either... now... i can think of some real morons; transport ticket inspectors, much of middle management, the deluded souls at the socialist alliance (bordering on the moronic, but basically just mentally blind), pharmaceutical risk management teams....wait thats the criminally insane :)....collectors editions of tupperware, oh im bored of this already... the list goes on...
Corrections to the below:
Their should be quotes after 1946: "The egoismus. . . end quote with free-and-easy effect." New paragraph:
"Rollins may be. . ."

@madeguy89 One's political affiliation has nothing to do with one's ability to appreciate art and good writing.

Try reading Black Coffee Blues or Now Watch Him Die. For all his shortcomings, Rollins does have a lot of quality in him.

I will...I'll let you know what I think. I don't hold out a lot of hope but I'll try to read with an open mind.

Henry Miller is a real artist, a man of great depths and a brilliant writer, one of the greatest that this country ever produced.
Rollins, on the other hand, is OK....

miller dwarfs everyone. rollins isn't even a person- shouldn't be in the same sentence as miller
Alfrunk 3 years ago
Yeah, anyone comparing Miller to Rollins is committing sacrelige. There's just no comparison.
Rollins is OK, but he's no artistic genius like many of his fans make him out to be. Not even close.
GoblinGirl 3 years ago
@GoblinGirl . but no one was comparing the two. he simply said he read them early.
