The most mind blowing thing about this song is the fact he made this literally on his death bed, he was in hospital when he produced this album (donuts). RIP Dilla. You changed OUR lives <3

Can't stop listening to this, for real. I immediately went out and bought this album! I just wish I had been there since the beginning for j dilla. And hearing about him now, 5 years after his death, makes me feel like I missed something special. But just like Immortal Technique said on Toast to the Dead, "J.Dilla’s still alive as long as his music is" RIP J Dilla
At the risk of sounding like a punk. I just gotta ask this. Real Talk. Is anybody as teary eyed as I was when I first heard this beat? This sounds like a good bye letter. Rest In Peace. You changed my outlook on life. Thanks JD. 1.
I've noticed that JD used the same instrumental on the intro and outro of Donuts, like he knew I'd be playing the whole album on repeat.. Needless to say the man was a beat god. But ya'll already knew that.

This album is amazin'!! - I've never heard anythin' quite like it before. I dunno if it was because he was on his deathbed which gave him the superb inspiration but he managed to convey a story to his listeners just through beats!!! Beautiful Soul!!! Peace!!
i finally bought the Donuts album today.. guess my dissapointment when i realized he hadn't written how he did the songs (like he did in Welcome 2 Detroit)... however i've heard that this album have been released and re-released a couple of times, is it a different content in the back of the album? anyone...
@ARABICHOMIE his exquisite choice of samples, his varying beats, and the subtle emotional spectrum of his music make him one of the best producers ever in my eyes. Yet this is subjective, so you may not have liked a single song off of this album, yet a vast number of people did, so in the eyes of many, he is the best producer ever.
@ARABICHOMIE This particular track gives you Dilla's rags-to-rich story. I love 9th, don't get me wrong. But 9th makes beats (albeit very good ones). Dilla makes songs.
@InTheMusic23 I listened to the album again, and actually there are some songs that I like :) Dilla is good. No doubt. but why are all his songs so short ? once you started to enjoy one, its already over :P What is missing to make 9th wonders work a song instead of just a beat in your oppinon ? 9th wonders "A glimmer" is an instrumental, that wouldnt necessarily need vocals, but I see why you wouldnt consider it as a song, its more of a beat :) ( /watch?v=f2cn7mbenow )
@ARABICHOMIE I mean most beats are just loops anyway, Dilla made a lot of these beats on his death bed so he may not have had time to loop them but this is probably all that would have happened with the beat anyway, replaying it 3 times would give you the same effect as if he looped it. But Donuts are short and sweet, hence why the songs are so short.
@ARABICHOMIE Exactly how I feel. I've listened over and over to Dilla tracks in hopes of understanding what everyone else says but I just don't get it. I aknowledge that Dilla was good and I love some of his beats but def not all or even half. In my opinion he just doesn't put things together like 9th. That's just me though.
The thing i always loved about Jay is that he didn't use the same 5 drum sounds or the same drum patterns for every song like a lot of producers. He didn't force the sample to fit whatever style he was feeling that day.
Will you Go to Heaven when you Die?(Here's a quick test) Have you ever lied, stolen, committed adultery(Jesus said if you even look with lust it's adultery) Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? Be honest. You know you will be guilty and end up in Hell. But God is not willing That Any perish. God loves us so much He sent Jesus Christ to suffer and die on the Cross and He rose from the dead. Today, Repent(Confess and Forsake your Sins) and trust in JESUS Christ then read the Bible and Obey it.
in unrelated news, anyone know what hat is in the album art? That black with white stripe Detroit Tigers hat... Been searching for it online, no luck. Such a sick hat, I need one!
This is one of the most personal and greatest records that has ever been made. Produced whilst he knew he was going to die. You can hear both his pride in what he has achieved and the sadness that he has to leave this world. "Young man went out and made a name for himself." An autobiographical sample, and eerie because it's like he's imagining what'll be said at his own funeral . Then the track ends abruptly, just like his life.
wow...listening this is like a journey...please check out my channel if you have a spare moment. Im a 14 year old producer with a love for REAL hip hop:)
@crissglitch666 There were two sides of Dilla... key made tracks with "musicality" using keyboards, classical strings, and live acoustic drums. Then there was the loops and chopped up sample type Dilla. With Donuts and Ruff Draft, Dilla brought back to what hip hop was originally.
Look and study someones entire catalog before making a judgement.
Just yesterday I was listening to Donuts again. I never realized how beautiful it was cause the other times I listened to it I thought of it as choppy, but as time went by and I listened to more gritty beats I learned to love Dilla.
@crissglitch666 I'm sorry, but you don't have the power to determine what is, and what isn't music. If you don't like it, then go listen to whatever you like and leave us in peace.
@CataclysmicAuthority And you don't have the power to respond to my opinion. Honestly.. I could go on Sony Acid right now, and 5 seconds later come up with this bs. Therefore it does not even come close to being classified as "music". You should really go and search the definition of music, music is what this is not.
@crissglitch666 Actually, I DO have the power to respond to your opinion. Click that little "Reply" button, type in the comment, click "Post". Easy as that. However, you have very little, if any, authority on what is and isn't music. Why even comment on this video if you don't like it? Go ahead and hate on some individuals that create "real" music. I'm not here to start an argument, so reply if you really feel the need to, but you'll get no further comments from me.
@crissglitch666 I looked up the definition of music ''A sound, or the study of such sounds, organized in time.'' I think we can all agree that this is sound organized in time, can't we ? And if you don't like it than that's your problem. Maybe you should go on Acid and make something like this in 5 secs, if it's nearly as good as ''this bs'' I'll buy it from you.
round one heaven sent round 2 is continental breakfast wit some donuts on the side kinda sentimental cuz the instrumental bred from a fingerprint which held the keys to a sound you will never get! let it show that the evidence has always taken precedence im from the ground- sediment everything i said i ment pull on commercial chains till i break their fuckin legiments break their fuckin legs i ment! when lords of land cooperate mothafuck they rent! i aint never lent R.I.P.J.D my time is spent
@thatkidjonathan but at the time good hip hop has always had the rhymes about the outfit. just the generation today sucks at being to put a nice lyric to it. Biggie: I had the red and black lumberjack with the hat to match. New Boys:(dumb ass bullshit). which is better?
If there is a Heaven, Dilla is there right now making beats for 2Pac, Big Pun, Biggie, Big L, and Ol Dirty Bastard. And when they do a collab, Nate Dogg is on the hook.
@InTheMusic23 Man,and what we would say, when whole Wu-Tang will die,one after another,Preemo and GS Foundation,Madlib and PBW,ATCQ,Cee-Lo,MF DOOM,Grandmaster Flash?Hip hop will die and the whole era with it
All this hating on the mainstream going on here... I love 90's (and 90's style 00's) hiphop but at the same time I listen to Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Wiz Khalifa. Give them a chance, and take a listen. You people gotta keep an open mind when it comes to music. Can't live with you'r eyes & ears closed.
@itchin4scratches I didn't say that Kanye and Wiz are the only ones making new shit. I just said I listen to them. I also listen to underground hip-hop like Oddisee, Little Brother, Blu, MED, Reks, and legends like Raekwon and Sean Price who are still making great music. I also like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar (even though Section.80 was a bit dissapointing. Basically, I listen to good hip-hop.
@FINbball oh ok man my bad then, nice to know you do know the artists you listed, thats awsome. but theres still plenty more lol plenty more that still blow kanye n whiz out da toilet water.. kanye use to be great though, i hope he does well with this new jay z thing
@itchin4scratches It's OK man. I think Kanye's new album is pretty good. My favorite songs are Gorgeous & So Appalled. But yeah I prefer Ye's first two albums, and his production on Common's Be album is crazy. Wanna tell me some more artists you're talking about (that blow ye & wiz out the toilet)?
@FINbball Hmm.. well thats alot, a few would be Action Bronson, Shin-ski, Blue Scholars, Kero One, Shad, Common Market, Edgar Allen Floe, Lushlife, Vents, Nomak, and those are just fairly new artists, others that are older but consistent would be like.. Apathy, Classified, Moka Only, Celph Titled, Necro, Eyedea & Abilities, Nujabes, Brother Ali, People Under the Stairs, Louis Logic, MF Doom, RA the Rugged Man, Fat Jon, etc etc, i could go on but ill be out of characters of course. so. whatuthink
@itchin4scratches Wow that's a lot of mc's I've never heard of... I know a couple of them (Action Bronson, Apathy, Classified, Celph Titled, Necro, Eyedea & Ab, Nujabes, DOOM, RA) but yeah thanks, I'ma check some of these out when I got time.
@FINbball yea cool man no prob, figured you would know some of them, also producers in there, not all mc's, but uhh id start with Louis Logic and J.J. Brown's "Misery Loves Comedy" album, its too fucking good.
@itchin4scratches ok I'll keep that in mind. but for real you need to check out the upcoming mc called"Gracias". He got two videos on Youtube, the songs "HKI" and "Feel Me". go check them out. He's from Finland (like me) but he rhymes in english. It's crazy
@itchin4scratches yeah I'm waiting too. His album called the Gracias EP drops soon, July 23th. Sadly Feel Me won't be on it, but you can get it free from his soundcloud.
@FINbball also, i agree, i love common, im always gonna like his older stuff more, but kanye was amazing on be for sure, and blu, reks and oddisee are the shit.
@joyorder93 You motherfucking idiot. You are so stupid. How the motherfuck is mainstream better than underground? I would like to hit you in the face for saying that. You are saying it like it's the truth. In the late 80s and in the 90s mainstream was great with the Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, OutKast, Gang Starr and groups like that. But now mainstream is dead and the only good ones are the underground. FUCK MAINSTREAM. YOU COMMERCIAL BRAINWASHED IDIOT. RIP DILLA & NUJABES
I give to you (the last donut of the night)

ARABICHOMIE 5 months ago

Today, Repent(Confess and Forsake your Sins) and trust in JESUS Christ then read the Bible and Obey it.

unhallowed925 5 months ago
This is one of the most personal and greatest records that has ever been made. Produced whilst he knew he was going to die. You can hear both his pride in what he has achieved and the sadness that he has to leave this world. "Young man went out and made a name for himself." An autobiographical sample, and eerie because it's like he's imagining what'll be said at his own funeral . Then the track ends abruptly, just like his life.

Someone point out the musicality in this.
crissglitch666 6 months ago
@crissglitch666 There were two sides of Dilla... key made tracks with "musicality" using keyboards, classical strings, and live acoustic drums. Then there was the loops and chopped up sample type Dilla. With Donuts and Ruff Draft, Dilla brought back to what hip hop was originally.
Look and study someones entire catalog before making a judgement.
KristofferMarc 5 months ago
Just yesterday I was listening to Donuts again. I never realized how beautiful it was cause the other times I listened to it I thought of it as choppy, but as time went by and I listened to more gritty beats I learned to love Dilla.

@crissglitch666 I'm sorry, but you don't have the power to determine what is, and what isn't music. If you don't like it, then go listen to whatever you like and leave us in peace.
CataclysmicAuthority 6 months ago
@CataclysmicAuthority And you don't have the power to respond to my opinion. Honestly.. I could go on Sony Acid right now, and 5 seconds later come up with this bs. Therefore it does not even come close to being classified as "music". You should really go and search the definition of music, music is what this is not.
crissglitch666 6 months ago
@crissglitch666 Actually, I DO have the power to respond to your opinion. Click that little "Reply" button, type in the comment, click "Post". Easy as that. However, you have very little, if any, authority on what is and isn't music. Why even comment on this video if you don't like it? Go ahead and hate on some individuals that create "real" music. I'm not here to start an argument, so reply if you really feel the need to, but you'll get no further comments from me.
CataclysmicAuthority 6 months ago
@crissglitch666 I looked up the definition of music ''A sound, or the study of such sounds, organized in time.'' I think we can all agree that this is sound organized in time, can't we ? And if you don't like it than that's your problem. Maybe you should go on Acid and make something like this in 5 secs, if it's nearly as good as ''this bs'' I'll buy it from you.
LumiNiscentMusic 5 months ago
@crissglitch666 lol, you're a joke kid. Would love to see you go into any program or use any type of hardware to reinvent this masterpiece.
Lot of ignorant people in this world, this is a prime example.
People think they know everything and come up with one ignorant ass comment.
At the end of the day it's amusing to me.

FINbball 6 months ago
@FINbball and neither can you, you think kanye and whiz are the only ones makin new shit? wake the fuck up
itchin4scratches 6 months ago
@itchin4scratches I didn't say that Kanye and Wiz are the only ones making new shit. I just said I listen to them. I also listen to underground hip-hop like Oddisee, Little Brother, Blu, MED, Reks, and legends like Raekwon and Sean Price who are still making great music. I also like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar (even though Section.80 was a bit dissapointing. Basically, I listen to good hip-hop.
FINbball 6 months ago
@FINbball oh ok man my bad then, nice to know you do know the artists you listed, thats awsome. but theres still plenty more lol plenty more that still blow kanye n whiz out da toilet water.. kanye use to be great though, i hope he does well with this new jay z thing
itchin4scratches 6 months ago
@itchin4scratches It's OK man. I think Kanye's new album is pretty good. My favorite songs are Gorgeous & So Appalled. But yeah I prefer Ye's first two albums, and his production on Common's Be album is crazy. Wanna tell me some more artists you're talking about (that blow ye & wiz out the toilet)?
FINbball 6 months ago
@FINbball Hmm.. well thats alot, a few would be Action Bronson, Shin-ski, Blue Scholars, Kero One, Shad, Common Market, Edgar Allen Floe, Lushlife, Vents, Nomak, and those are just fairly new artists, others that are older but consistent would be like.. Apathy, Classified, Moka Only, Celph Titled, Necro, Eyedea & Abilities, Nujabes, Brother Ali, People Under the Stairs, Louis Logic, MF Doom, RA the Rugged Man, Fat Jon, etc etc, i could go on but ill be out of characters of course. so. whatuthink
itchin4scratches 6 months ago
@itchin4scratches Wow that's a lot of mc's I've never heard of... I know a couple of them (Action Bronson, Apathy, Classified, Celph Titled, Necro, Eyedea & Ab, Nujabes, DOOM, RA) but yeah thanks, I'ma check some of these out when I got time.
FINbball 6 months ago
@FINbball yea cool man no prob, figured you would know some of them, also producers in there, not all mc's, but uhh id start with Louis Logic and J.J. Brown's "Misery Loves Comedy" album, its too fucking good.
not to be slept on.
itchin4scratches 6 months ago
@itchin4scratches ok I'll keep that in mind. but for real you need to check out the upcoming mc called"Gracias". He got two videos on Youtube, the songs "HKI" and "Feel Me". go check them out. He's from Finland (like me) but he rhymes in english. It's crazy
