The Philippines has a BIGGER problem. most people will buy 2 dogs (without having them checked for health issues) breed them (even though they found abnormalities or deformities still they will continue to breed) and call themselves "KENNEL"s once the puppy is available all must go. no standard screening required. I agree with this documentary 100%. That you for putting this out there. I shared with all of my friends and family.. as it IS Westminster week.. and encouraged them to pass it on to their friends. I knew many breeds were in trouble, but to see the CKCS and Boxer suffer in this video, my heart literally broke in two. I hope to join a league of dog lovers to help get the Kennel Clubs to change their breed standards.
I don't really agree with breeding because there are so many dogs in shelters that need homes.. So why would you keep breeding ? It's just giving more dogs a chance to be put down cause they can't find a home. Not to mention it's unfair and cruel for a dog to have a bunch of litters.. Never really living a happy life. I feel so bad for these dogs. I can't believe we bread beautiful healthy dogs into this. :(

Banning backyard breeding and breeding without having a license as well as dog shows would partly help in solving the problem with unhelthy and unwanted dogs. Limiting number of children per family would help the world as well. I agree with the 2d part of your comment.

Without breeding we would not have canis familiaris at all. Throwing out the baby with the bath water is just as damaging, maybe even more so, then what bad breeding has caused thus far. BAD breeding must stop. If we stop ALL breeding then we have no dogs. Blanket statements like "breeding is evil" is not helping but hurting dogs and the progress we are trying to make with this issue.

@ncarter7 This is absolutely not true. As a veterinarian I can assure you that they are subject to the same problems you see in human inbreeding. Having more chromosomes does not negate the problem that related individuals harbor the same negative, recessive traits much more frequently than unrelated dogs. Breeding heterozygous dogs with unrelated animals would almost always eliminate these problems and prevent them from ever surfacing. Inbreeding causes the exact opposite effect.

This is absolutely sickening. I currently own a mutt, a schnauzer-poodle mix, and he's by far the best dog I have ever known: he's loving, friendly, tolerant, and wouldn't hurt a fly. I don't care at all that he's somewhat lacking in fur. His personality is what makes him the perfect pet. In my own opinion we have pedigree dogs because alot of people love particular breeds. Kennel Clubs around the world continue breeding the different breeds of dogs we love. I live in the U.S. and not in the U.K., The US has many Kennel Clubs such as the AKC, UKC, CKC (Continental Kennel Club). In the American Kennel Club, it has the "AKC Canine Health Foundation" which researches genetic problems and diseases in dogs, and people. The CHF works on new cures and ways to help our dogs.
I cried in the first 5minute for watching this. I just got a puppy (husky) He according to AKC standards was born with a fault.. He is considered a woolly husky I researched the dog and all was said is that it the coat holds moisture be careful in cold temp. I rather have that fault then some of these deficits I love caesar.

@the5ramdom5team I believe efforts need to be put to stop dog show breeders breed dogs for shows and to ban dog shows all together. Buying dogs from those breeders will only encourage them to keep on breeding more dogs and selling you even more undesirable dogs. It will not solve the problem.

I have 2 beautiful cavvys, 1 with genetic problems. I have refused to register my dogs with the KC as I knew what they did, it is disgusting what they are allowed to get away with. They are nothing more than rich criminals. They make me sick
The excuses used in this by the kennel club totally contradict each other... They say they breed german shepherd 'to the breed standard' not for those with the best ability to work, then use the excuse that the rhodesian ridgebacks with a ridge back were the best for the work. Neither should be the answer, it should be a healthy dog that is best suited to the job it was breed to do, then if they want look for a 'pretty dog' to distinguish between healthy and work useful dogs.
This is very very sad, to see so many problems in such loving dogs. People who does this should be ashamed. The whole idea of breed standards is stupid. A dog is a dog. They're all loving, caring, loyal companions. To know that because of genetic breeding these great dogs are suffering with all these health issues is horrible.
Heres an Idea: Stop buying purebreds that have these traits. The breeders will stop focusing on those traits and maybe, just maybe, we can bring back some breeds from the brink.
@foughtwolf yes, youre right. I have always loved purebred dogs. Thankfully our unpapered Golden Retriever is 12 years old and no health issues at all, surprisingly. Sadly, my 2 yr old Rottweiler, not papered but just irresponsible breeders, already has degenerative joint disease and both hips, elbows, and knees are all affected. We love them like family and have to watch them degenerate and suffer greatly at an age where they are still puppies, and should be running around like puppies.
It seems that the kennel club is a huge detriment to the pedigree dog as breeders believe that what the kennel club says...is carved in gold which is, indeed, very sad. The diseases and health conditions that the pedigrees possess must be dealt with. I have always loved mutts as they are a mixture of everything and this video verifies that I should continue to go with the "mutts". Hopefully, someone will do something for the pedigrees before it's too late.

As an owner of AKC Yorkshire Terrier I would have to agree about beauty comes before health.My female is considered show quality with bloodline Judabob,but sadly she was diagnosed with luxating patella knees in both rear legs and has collapsing trachea.I made the responsible choice and had her spayed and I've never regretted it.

A real responsible animal lover will save one or two of those than to pay several hundreds or even thousands for a pure breed. I was in West Palm Beach last week and saw a Yorky in a store for $1500. Thats insane when so many other little dogs die at the pounds and shelters. But its just an opinion that a lot of people disagree with. Oh well.

Why do most dogs end up in shelters? Because the silly owner wasn't happy with the dog for whatever reason. Breeding allows us to create dogs with certain looks, behaviors, sizes and temperaments. The closer the dog is to the person's ideal of a pet the more likely a happy ending becomes.
Most people make blanket statements in order to feel holier than thou but I the only way we do justice to any given problem is to attack it intelligently on an individual basis.

I adopted an english bulldog recently, and it's kinda turned into a nightmare.
The wee thing just cannot breath at all when he "sleeps", or what passes for sleep when your constantly being strangled. But the idiot I bought him off was proud to tell me that he had no such problems...
Now, I am dirt-poor, and it's going to take me months to save up for the really expensive operation to fix him, so until then he'll be suffering and I'll be hurting a fair bit at his misery

This is very saddening to see. Ever since humans began to breed dogs for "looks" their health/genetics has declined severely. Now, obviously diet wouldn't cause genetic issues, but it very well DOES cause various health problems that could easily be eliminated with a species appropriate diet. The "Barf Diet" is a joke. If you plan to feed raw, you feed raw "Prey-Model" style. I'm sorry to say, but dogs are CARNIVORES, not omnivores as the vets would have you believe. Look that one up.

If you open your dogs mouth, those huge impressive teeth (or tiny needle sharp teeth) are designed for grabbing, ripping, tearing, shredding, and shearing meat . Dogs do not produce the necessary enzymes in their saliva (amylase, for example) to start the break-down of carbohydrates and starches. I'm glad I finally realized that feeding kibble is SUCH a scam.
I have actually had arguments with people who said that it was cruel to feed my dogs a meat only diet. Funny how no one would try to raise a cow by feeding it meat but somehow it is acceptable to raise a wolf (domesticated or otherwise) on salads with some beef... Silly

These people make me so angry, they say that they breed dogs in compliance for the welfare of the dog, but since when was hardly being able to walk in the interests of a dog? couldn't watch past 0:17 sorry.. but it reminded me of when I had to take my 15 year old siberian husky to the vet to be put down due to screaming aching arthritus, bad hip, and stomach pains. (MAY HE RIP) the vet just calmly told he he wouldn't feel a thing and immediatly after injecting that needle of death watching my favourite husky shake and twitch and howl in pain as his last few seconds of life while looking at ME. Thanks this actually made me tear up typing this. Why am I still typing.

"The Kennel Club" is a REGISTRY. NOT the Ethics police. It is the Resposiblity and the JOB of the Parent Clubs of each breed to set the Code of Ethics and to establish that breeds 'standard', and punish as they see fit. I agree with this documentary 100%. That you for putting this out there. I shared with all of my friends and family.. as it IS Westminster week.. and encouraged them to pass it on to their friends. I knew many breeds were in trouble, but to see the CKCS and Boxer suffer in this video, my heart literally broke in two. I don't really agree with breeding because there are so many dogs in shelters that need homes.. So why would you keep breeding ? It's just giving more dogs a chance to be put down cause they can't find a home. Not to mention it's unfair and cruel for a dog to have a bunch of litters.. Never really living a happy life. @ncarter7 This is absolutely not true. As a veterinarian I can assure you that they are subject to the same problems you see in human inbreeding. Having more chromosomes does not negate the problem that related individuals harbor the same negative, recessive traits much more frequently than unrelated dogs. Breeding heterozygous dogs with unrelated animals would almost always eliminate these problems and prevent them from ever surfacing. Inbreeding causes the exact opposite effect.

In my own opinion we have pedigree dogs because alot of people love particular breeds. Kennel Clubs around the world continue breeding the different breeds of dogs we love. I live in the U.S. and not in the U.K., The US has many Kennel Clubs such as the AKC, UKC, CKC (Continental Kennel Club). In the American Kennel Club, it has the "AKC Canine Health Foundation" which researches genetic problems and diseases in dogs, and people. The CHF works on new cures and ways to help our dogs.

The excuses used in this by the kennel club totally contradict each other... They say they breed german shepherd 'to the breed standard' not for those with the best ability to work, then use the excuse that the rhodesian ridgebacks with a ridge back were the best for the work. Neither should be the answer, it should be a healthy dog that is best suited to the job it was breed to do, then if they want look for a 'pretty dog' to distinguish between healthy and work useful dogs.

@foughtwolf yes, youre right. I have always loved purebred dogs. Thankfully our unpapered Golden Retriever is 12 years old and no health issues at all, surprisingly. Sadly, my 2 yr old Rottweiler, not papered but just irresponsible breeders, already has degenerative joint disease and both hips, elbows, and knees are all affected. We love them like family and have to watch them degenerate and suffer greatly at an age where they are still puppies, and should be running around like puppies.

It seems that the kennel club is a huge detriment to the pedigree dog as breeders believe that what the kennel club says...is carved in gold which is, indeed, very sad. The diseases and health conditions that the pedigrees possess must be dealt with. I have always loved mutts as they are a mixture of everything and this video verifies that I should continue to go with the "mutts". Hopefully, someone will do something for the pedigrees before it's too late.

I had to turn it off I can't watch animals suffering. But the message was not lost on me. I have an English bulldog that, knock on wood, has been relatively healthy and has grown to the age of 9. The massive head, low slung body etc are less pronounced in my guy so maybe this is why he is doing so well. I'm really devastated to hear this because I love Bulldogs and I planned on having at least one for the rest of my life. But if this is true and not one documentarians agenda than I'll have

This had me sobbing in many places. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see those dogs in pain and to know there is nothing preventing it from happening to many others.
I have personally owned a number of "pure bred" German Shepherds, they have all been bred with the straight "working back" and not the hunched back... to see such a powerful dog struggling simply to walk as those at the show were had me in tears.
How do these breeders sleep at night? Do they care about their dogs at all?

As an owner of AKC Yorkshire Terrier I would have to agree about beauty comes before health.My female is considered show quality with bloodline Judabob,but sadly she was diagnosed with luxating patella knees in both rear legs and has collapsing trachea.I made the responsible choice and had her spayed and I've never regretted it.

I posted this movie to let people know about bad breeding practices but to categorically say that ALL breeding is bad is like throwing out the baby with the bath water.
Responsible breeding is what we need to strive for. Demonizing all breeding creates just another problem altogether and does not solve the one we are trying to fix. We need to demand a change in breed standards to where the standard DEMANDS healthy dogs. That is what we need to address if we want to see a change.

@MandyLionWWIII Yeah, like I said. Its best to go to a shelter. My local shelters are over flowing with dogs and cats, most will be put down. A real responsible animal lover will save one or two of those than to pay several hundreds or even thousands for a pure breed. I was in West Palm Beach last week and saw a Yorky in a store for $1500. Thats insane when so many other little dogs die at the pounds and shelters. But its just an opinion that a lot of people disagree with. Oh well.

Why do most dogs end up in shelters? Because the silly owner wasn't happy with the dog for whatever reason. Breeding allows us to create dogs with certain looks, behaviors, sizes and temperaments. The closer the dog is to the person's ideal of a pet the more likely a happy ending becomes.

Most people make blanket statements in order to feel holier than thou but I the only way we do justice to any given problem is to attack it intelligently on an individual basis.
This documentary shows bad practices but it is not a witch hunt against breeders who are doing it the right way.
ALL dogs have a right to life. The ones in the shelters as well as the ones being born at a breeder right now. It is easy to say the "politically correct" thing bit it is hard to judge wisely.

I adopted an english bulldog recently, and it's kinda turned into a nightmare.
The wee thing just cannot breath at all when he "sleeps", or what passes for sleep when your constantly being strangled. But the idiot I bought him off was proud to tell me that he had no such problems...
Now, I am dirt-poor, and it's going to take me months to save up for the really expensive operation to fix him, so until then he'll be suffering and I'll be hurting a fair bit at his misery

This is very saddening to see. Ever since humans began to breed dogs for "looks" their health/genetics has declined severely. Now, obviously diet wouldn't cause genetic issues, but it very well DOES cause various health problems that could easily be eliminated with a species appropriate diet. The "Barf Diet" is a joke. If you plan to feed raw, you feed raw "Prey-Model" style. I'm sorry to say, but dogs are CARNIVORES, not omnivores as the vets would have you believe. Look that one up.

If you open your dogs mouth, those huge impressive teeth (or tiny needle sharp teeth) are designed for grabbing, ripping, tearing, shredding, and shearing meat . Dogs do not produce the necessary enzymes in their saliva (amylase, for example) to start the break-down of carbohydrates and starches. I'm glad I finally realized that feeding kibble is SUCH a scam.

These people make me so angry, they say that they breed dogs in compliance for the welfare of the dog, but since when was hardly being able to walk in the interests of a dog? Or having a skull too small for your brain? How is that taking into consideration the dog? couldn't watch past 0:17 sorry.. but it reminded me of when I had to take my 15 year old siberian husky to the vet to be put down due to screaming aching arthritus, bad hip, and stomach pains. (MAY HE RIP) the vet just calmly told he he wouldn't feel a thing and immediatly after injecting that needle of death watching my favourite husky shake and twitch and howl in pain as his last few seconds of life while looking at ME. Thanks this actually made me tear up typing this. Why am I still typing.

The basic understanding of this principle is taught across the world at any high school level.

"The Kennel Club" is a REGISTRY. NOT the Ethics police. It is the Resposiblity and the JOB of the Parent Clubs of each breed to set the Code of Ethics and to establish that breeds 'standard', and punish as they see fit. Some people aren't members of those clubs and choose to breed irresponsibly. SO, You want to blame an organization for letting this happen when you SHOULD be blaming and going after the people who are knowingly doing this to future generations of dogs first hand.

But it also doesn't even mention that there are health minded breeders out there who test for any genetic disease they can before deciding to breed. As for the showing...the majority of people who show do it as a hobby and a fun weekend out with their family.
YES there are breeders out there who don't and won't test but as a buyer YOU have to do the research on who you want to do business with and what you expect of their puppies including tested parents.
