  • Thumbs up for funny face at: 5:43

  • thank you... as an american, i just recently gained interest but was confused about ruck and breakdowns... niw i understand turnovers... very informative... thanks...

  • all young aspiring rugby players should watch this, regardless of their position. theres some vital tips in here about the breakdown that need to be learnt early, and then practice, practice, practice.

  • very nice video. on thing I must say about the example between wales and england at 6:45 is recently in my games if people tackle a player but remain on their feet and go straight for the ball the tackler gets called for "not releasing". the ref wants us after making a tackle and remaining on our feet to lift or hands off the player BEFORE attempting to steal the ball. my question is, is this a new rule or just something my local refs have decided is best?

  • Nice video. Really nice.

  • great video i was breaking my back tryin to find if i could get possesion of the ball during a ruck and now i know how to keep it up. now i know what to do in my next rugby match

  • @HighlandRugby good post mate !

  • this just settled a dispute between my mates and I, thank you

  • ... not really ALL because of a turnover, most of it was to do with the fact that Habana is frigging rapid lol

  • This is really interesting, i cant understand why there is one dislike, you probably know nothing about rugby whoever you are.

  • heaps good video, good information. Keep Going!

  • thank you man :) i learnt a lot :D

  • Great video ,it explained alot

  • Great video, thanks!

  • This is a brilliant tutorial.I have just been dropped from the A team, and i play blindside flanker so this explains everything to me! Thank u!!

  • Way better than expert village... they suck

  • Cheers for the video, helped show me a few things or two!

  • I really like this tutorial. I'm glad you've taken the time to make it.

  • excellent thanks! :P

  • really good video thanks

  • I bet this is what David Pocock watches :)

  • Lol are you a AllBlack fan? using the France game to demonstrate illegal rucking!lol.

  • @Bsure12345 well its easy to use an obvious example ;P

  • @Bsure12345 I'd say he is an All Blacks fan considering his name is HighLandRugby.

  • This is really clear and good. Lots of help too :)

  • This is really clear and good. Lots of help too :)

  • Graeme Kennedy - Fantastic Tutorial!

  • brilliant and very informative, thanks

  • Excellent tutorial. Fair play for putting in the time and the effort.

  • What about a one on one situation where the tackling player gets to his feet and attempts to play the ball? Different results from each breakdown.

  • Can someone explain to me:

If the ruck is formed and the opposition has not stolen the ball, it is still a ruck? And hands cannot be used? so whats used instead? But if the opposition has stolen the ball, a ruck cannot be formed? so what is formed instead? Sorry im kinda confussed :D

  • @liambannin - correct. You then either use your feet to hook the ball back or commit enough players to the ruck to drive the opposition backwards, freeing up the ball so one of your players can then pick it up. Once the ball has emerged this way, the ruck's over, so hands are then allowed.

  • your videos are excellent!

i think that are better than the irb's videos for referees!

  • this game is good for new yorkers - they love to take anything from the other people - like stealing

  • yah gotta update bro. i think you gotta release the tackler now. cant just hold on to them no more.

  • @KrUmPiTz you're completely right, but no oldschool referee is going to be quick enough to call it yet ;)

  • Great video. I hope they use this video or something very like this when televising the College sevens tournament on NBC in the US on June 4-6. I found this video very helpful about when/how to "poach" the ball.

One question - at what point is it legal for the ball to be picked up out of the ruck? What are the restrictions on the person picking the ball up? (when does it change from a hands in the ruck penalty to a legal pick up?)

  • Great video

  • thanks for the tips it helped a lot

  • ok i just started playing rugby and have played american football all my life...we were always taught to never put our heads down while tackling or for any part of the game really. Yet all these guys are putting their heads down when they are trying to steal the ball...isnt this putting you at a high risk for neck injury when the other team gets to the ruck and hits you?

  • no, you dont use your head to clear out or tackle, you use ur shoulder/arms. The reason why the head is brought down is to get into a lower, more powerful body position. When goin in for a tackle, etc its always important to concentrate on where you put ur head to avoid injury, its all about positioning

  • Having played both sports i can see what you mean. have a look at 3:27 - 3:28, with the red player as he is, completely folded over and very low over the white player on the ground. It makes it very awkward for an opposing player to move him using his shoulders. The white player has to resort to a grappling technique. If a stupid player were to fly in low enough with a shoulder barge you could injure your head/neck through the contact but if you keep low & folded over you should be okay.

  • heinrich brussow is only 5'11'

but he is also 220 lbs

  • best 6 on earth.

  • What is an ideal wheight and height for a flanker, and a prop? I'm trying to figure out were i'd best fit.

  • @LifeAfterRobots well you gotta believe that size doesn't matter (up to certain points and level) but it looks like in pros, short flanks are around 6' 2" and some are as tall as 6' 7"

and of course, they all seem to weight like 220 lbs +

  • Depends on your age group.

Flanker at adult level, say, 15stone? Muscle though.

    Prop, pushing it to 18-20st.

  • @syngates93 Well im only 15, i play back row and im 14 stone but it all depends on your body composition and type, ectomorph, endomorph,or mesomorph. Most back rows would be mesomorphs, if you don't know what that means, google it :)

  • @XxXN311YXxX

I did gcse pe, i know what it means dw ;)

I play scotland u17s and tbh with you bud, our flankers are rakes!

But they gas me every single time in a sprint, i blame it on the fact of being a prop ha.

  • @syngates93 Im at the Newcastle Falcons academy and all our back row are big and well built, they all fast as well. Well im 6 ft and 94 kg, and im the smallest and lightest, for a u15 academy thats pretty big :L Not as big as northampton or leicster though :|

  • @XxXN311YXxX

academy at u15? Don't you mean epdg? ;)

I played tigers epdg and it's pretty er, fiddled to say the least. Now playing full time academy for Bedford and It's phaaaat!

    :')

  • In a ruck are u allowed to retrieve the ball by hooking it back with your feet?

  • yeh

  • @JackdaCaptain thats the purpose of the ruck. To take the ball with feet to the back of the ruck where it can legally be picked up.

  • yes you are

  • good vid Kennedy, keep them coming!

  • 5:55 is bull crap lol.

ive stolen so many balls like that one on one its easy thats not a ruck. its only just forming you can grab it.

  • Great vid. will have to pass this knowledge on to our forwards all who are closest to breakdowns. Never thought about gettings hand on to force penantlies from the opposition for holding on. Good work.

  • This is very good! your tutorial makes more sense to the major role of the loose fowards to produce quality ball to the backs to do their thing. Thanks for posting!!!

  • *big Burger lol

  • lol nig Burger at the beginning vs Argentina

  • thanks very much keep them coming

  • so yeah keep em coming

  • good vid. just started coaching a u18 club after a few years of playing. Its a difficult part of the game to grasp at first so its a good visual reference

  • amazing tutorial! well done

  • This is a good video, but if you want to get a better tutorials, get it from the man himself - Richie McCaw!!!

  • Can someone please explain to me just how you are supposed to present the ball back on ur own side if u are the one who steals the ball at a ruck,, as im findin that if you put it between ur legs, ur penalised for squeze ball" due to these fuckin ELVs, and if u take urself to ground and lay the ball back, ur penalised for playing the ball on the ground. there must be a way, so any advice would be appreciated

  • I'm no expert, but usually see the scrumhalf stand about 2-3 feet from the breakdown, and a loosie/lock flick it (throws it) back from the side with one arm. Then the halfback catches it. So that the ball doesnt bounce of the scrumhalf, he stays 2 feet away to prevent a knock-on by trying to receive the ball. I'm no expert, again, but this is what I've observed on TV.

  • Great video! I do understand now.

But now..I've been wondering. I see the flankers, props, and sometimes the locks in the rucks. Does the hooker ever get any rucking?

  • wow great vid, just started playing rugby with people who have been playing all their lives and i didnt know any of the rules. But this helped alot, thanx alot mate

  • a good video, now i know why i keep gettin penalised in the ruck!!!

  • Thanks very much for a well thought out and well put together video.

  • lol lets see some richie mccaw skills man

  • ok so when you are first to the breakdown, you can just pick the ball up as long as you are on your feet? And when you here the ref talking about hands in the ruck, is that people handling the ball when they are lying down and therefore out of the game?

  • Yeah, exactly. But once u pick th ball up th ruck becomes irrelevant and players can come round the side to tackle you.

  • you can't just pick it up, you have to come"through the gate" i.e. from your side of the ruck to pick it up, unless you are the tackler in which case you can get to your feet and play the ball, before a ruck forms.

  • very good, useful

  • another good technique is to grab the player from bottom [lying on ground back 2 u]and lift over the ball this is legal and u can then bind 2 the player until support arrives causing a turnover ball i have tried this technique many times and it always works for me

  • keep them coming excellent vid!

  • good vid, keep them coming!!!!!!!!

  • nice video may go some way to helping people understand the rules better

  • well done very well made and presented video

  • very nice editing I like it!!!!

  • i like this one
