@Gcracker1595 There are a lot of drills for learning to bend the pole. A good one is getting a smaller pole and taking it from 3 or 4 lefts approach. Emphasize pushing UP with both arms and land standing on the mat. Also do plenty of pole plants up against a wall with correct form l to really ingrain that muscle memory of pushing up and keeping your body away from the pole.
See i doubt my self when i tried to jump 12.6 in my high school meet, i play football so i dont get to practice at all. I need form. Iv got 12ft with no great form. What can i do to better my form?
this is really helpful! i had conference recently and i was having a very off day and wasent clearing anything and this made me feel soo much better! thanks for posting
last season was my first time pole vaulting and my PR was 11 ft. I be came so in love with this sport that i joined the gymnastics team at my high school. This is my senior year and i want to jump 14 ft. I really hope gymnastics has helped my form. Going over the bar is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
haha i get vaulters block all the time. My coach gets so mad at me, i can go two whole weeks and not even clear five feet then i go to upper state and clear 7' 6" and end up going to state
I'd pretty much say that pole vaulting is 4 things: speed, technique, consistency and confidence. This is only my second year vaulting and I had a PR of 8'6 my first year, but I've worked on it over and over again and I just got 11' today. Even if you don't have a specialist coach (I have no coach) watching training videos and good vaulters really helps you see what it is that your missing. I know I'm not the greatest, but its a personal satisfaction and I'm very happy with 11' right now
i do this all the time when i see people that i think i can get higher then i do very well but when i see older students jumping in the 14's i just loose it and do poorly..
i get this every now and then, i have to step back and anylize what im doing wrong, and fix problems one by one, listening to music helps me alot. me and my friend are seniors in hs, my pr is 13'6, his is 15'8, hes been vaulting since 8th grade, im a 2nd year vaulter
For your first year, absolutely. The great thing about pole vault is that it isn't all about comparing or matching yourself up against others but about pushing yourself to your limits and trying to better your own marks.
alot of people tell me that its very good, its my first year too im a freshmen in high school. i cleared 9.6 yesterday and on monday i will clear 10 for sure.
@lriglegna Hi, its also my first year of vaulting. Im still trying to get the millions of steps down. i was wondering if you could maybe find a good video of someone in slow motion , i havent been able to find a good one. Thanks
Yes. Dude, don't worry about what ANYONE says if they speak negatively. I only cleared 7'6" my first year and this year I'm vaulting 13'6" and had a 4 ft PR my first meet of my second year. I did a lot of work after the season though. If you love it, search around for a PV club and join during the summer. Look what happened to me :)
man i broke a pole a couple weeks ago a week before my regional tournament. i didnt vault all week. at regionals i borrowed a smaller pole from someone just to get a small little vault in to get my head back in the game. i still sucked but i'm glad that i vaulted again. my season ended that day.
i learned to just vault cuz u'll regret it in the end.
Thank you for posting this video! I am a sophomore in high school and have been vaulting since my freshman year. This sport is such a mental game and it is so important to visualize, and it helps show the importance of it when the pros say that they do it.
i just started vaulting, and i realize how mental it really is. its a lot like rock climbing, before you do the first route, ou cant psyc yourself out or else you fess
Running through? The body follows your mind. Your mind has to be ready when you start your run up. It is like parachuting. Once you step into the plane - you jump. So do not even start your run up unless your are not ready mentally.
as a young high school pole vaulter i truly thought i was the only one who had bad days like this recently i could not even get to the mats in sectional so this helps
Great video, I'm on my second year pole vaulting and I am currently working on bending the pole, any suggestions? My PR is 9ft

its so true about taking it personally
ive ran through, or miffed a height i knew i could clear, i actually punched a fence i was so mad, i didn't need to be so angry
TorryHoltFan 4 years ago
the way to not run through = having love for the sport and realizing by running through you are throwing away everything you have worked so hard for.

so very true! i hope that came across in the video.
