  • It's cool to compare his earlier performances with some of the newer ones.

  • what the hell is a shopvac??

  • @thelawley1 a small pod-like vacuum cleaner used in industrial settings and for cleaning up things that a regular vacuum cleaner lacks the power to suck up.

    ^my definition

  • @thelawley1 "ShopVac" Is a compound of the words Workshop Vacuum. Which is a specially designed vacuum that can pick up, loose dirt, sawdust, trash, nails, screws, and some can clean up water. They are designed to be more powerful, robust, and durable, than a typical household vacuum, due to their use in the harsher environments of a workshop. The term "ShopVac" was copyrighted as a name brand by a popular manufacturer of these type of vacuums.

  • is that anoonymoose in the background?

  • it's funny because while I was learning this song upstairs someone tried to call but I couldn't hear them because it's loud with shopvac on

  • @yhmmot whats a "gangstas"?

  • Saw JoCo at the Union Chapel, London a couple of weeks ago, and he played this. Everyone loved it :)

  • this was the first joco song i ever heard, which got me started, and i got addicted to JoCo music. I bought a bass cause meh i always wanted to play bass plus i couldn;t find an acoustic sooo......anyway he is my idol and he is fuckin awesome so those 8 diislikes up there, i'm gonna find you

  • Wrong chord at 2:42. Bet he thought he'd got away with it.

Going to see JoCo tomorrow at the Union Chapel! Can't wait.

  • what was that noise at 3:33? O_o

  • 8 people got sucked in by the shopvac. xD

  • Such a bittersweet thing. Nice melody & pacing, very sad story about life today in much of the US. Alas.

  • For whatever reason, this is my favourite JoCo song.

  • @GlobalPeregrinations Same... I don't know why it's my favourite song though... It's just awesome. xD

  • Do a search for this song and you'll find an amazing video of this song with kinetic type + what you could call the "deluxe" JoCo version (back-up vocals and such). Really gives the song some momentum.

  • @tejaswoman It's called the studio version. Some people like to make recordings that aren't live, so they go to this place called a studio and they get recorded! They can add as many vocal tracks as they want because it's not live, unlike this!

  • @RockerGeek28 And your point is? ... because mine was that unlike most JoCo songs, this one is the rare case where the live version doesn't hold a candle to the studio. Nearly every other song he does, the live version has its own charm; this one, I've seen several different live performances and it just doesn't compare to the studio track.

  • @tejaswoman lol i saw that!

    its terrific :P

  • this song makes me sad

  • Is it just my dirty mind that took it as JoCo having sex with it? It's loud with the shopvac on, drunken sex, etc. Anywho, if you haven't thought of it that way give it a second listen and it's a lot funnier.

  • @NotOneToFly imagine slash messing up like this...

Coulton's crowdplay is great to even listen to. He's such a great musician, why does noone know him for anything else than Still Alive?

  • @Metalpulsecannon And re: Your Brains. And it's because everyone knows about P0RTAL and Left 4 Dead 2 :\

  • @Metalpulsecannon Because people these days are faggots and dont listen to good music anymore.

  • @rundiwolf Couldn't agree more. Coulton is almost completely unrecognised where I live, and everyone listens to Twits of Leon. It's quite depressing now that I think of it.

  • This guy's got a great approach to live performance. I started watching all the songs in performance order. You could tell he was nervous at first (he did First of May 50% faster than the album version), but he really started to to warm up on this one. There's not many performers who can mess up a chord on stage and laugh at himself/keep going at the same time.

  • I like that plannedXaccident's comment was OVER A YEAR AGO and he's still getting responses, within three days. Anyhow... I think this is one of my favorite JoCo songs. :D

  • @NebulousSketch Which is even more amusing when you think about how the answer is the other highest rated comment.

  • 7 people found it hard to turn.

  • How can people not understand the left turn part?

  • 7 people missed the like button XD

  • @Wolfwood428

    HERP DERP.

  • @Grizzlism DERPA DERPA HERP DERP HERPA

  • @Naturality its a drivin pun when your driving your not supposed to make a left turn unless the lines are broken and when your on a main road almost all left turns are not legal

  • @ShadowDuffle That, like a road that leads onto a highway, you have all that oncoming traffic, its easy to turn right to go with the flow of traffic but sometimes it seems impossible to turn left with out a stoplight.. Its a common complaint among people who live on a street like that..

  • @smoke770077 !! Thank you for explaining that! I live in a small town that doesn't have any heavy traffic, main street included, and the highway is built away from the town.

So I got that "hard to make a left turn" was supposed to be a joke, but didn't know why.

    Thanks again XD

  • @ShadowDuffle Ah, okay. I live in the UK and we don't have such troubles. Right turns, on the other hand...

  • I never got the "left turn" line, but people here seem to go wild for it. Anyone care to explain why it's funny? :S

  • @Naturality i dont think it's the meaning of the "left turn" part, it's how he actually made his voice break when he sang it. "it's hard to make a left turnnnnnnnnnn"

  • 7 people missed the like button D:

  • Awesome

  • this is the 4th vid of him in this cafe that people have walked infront of the cam...i swear next one ill throw a shoe at! (reference to boot to the head Phoenix Wright)

  • love joko one of the singers that sound better live then his cds

  • I think it's about equall, but Joko is definately more entertaining live.

  • @TragedyXIII it's JoCo

  • @saxhero26 My bad. Sorry, sometimes when I think of JoCo I think of a monkey and when I think of a monkey named JoCo it comes out Joko.

  • best song evar

  • best

    song

    EVER

  • "i'm gonna do a song.....now"

wow thx jonathan, we thought u wre just gonna leave b4 singing anythign lol^^

  • @emoharry2007

He's just thinking out loud while trying to explain the song he's about to perform. Not everyone can maintain their thoughts perfectly while performing in public.

  • @namenamethedrood

    What the fuck.

  • And to the concept of the song hes like oh yea this is awesome i can vacuum any thing and then he realized oh wait its the same exact thing

  • @namenamethedrood:

    what?

  • Comment removed

  • @namenamethedrood

Or you know, Its about how when you move to the sub-urbs theres nothing to do but wait until your kids move out and you die.

  • A shopvac is a compact vacuum cleaner usually used for more heavy duty purposes, like vacuuming out the car or garage.

  • It's designed for a workshop, hence the name. It picks up small screws, washers, metal and wood shavings, etc.

  • I love when he messes up! I freaking dig you Mr. Coulton!!! Keep it coming!!!!!

  • can anyone tell me what is shopvac?

  • its a dinosaur.

  • i didnt like this song the first time i heard it, but yesterday i heard it again and i REALLY like it now. the power of JoCo

  • @elex545 omg exact same story here!

  • #414!!!

  • #411 :D

  • This is awesome

  • 400th! =D

  • Yah, not as many people care as you probably think do.

  • @JtheEpic

I didn't really suppose anyone would care. Just wanted to keep the silly tradition of calling out rating numbers alive. =)

  • 354th woots :P

  • My favorite song!!

  • i want my own shop with a shopvac

  • so what's the name of this song?

  • SHOP VAC

  • i'm guessing its shopvac since thats what he says lol

  • @amaff I think he forgot to mention it

  • @amaff i think its called dick in a box

  • @amaff i think its called gangstas paridice

  • @yhmmot Gangsta's* Paradise"

  • @amaff i dont know. i didnt quite hear it lol

  • @amaff This is a shot in the dark, here, but I think its called shopvac....

  • @procrastinator99 i thought it was called "evil zombies from space?"

  • @crazypercentage That is also a possibility.

  • Ha 340!

  • Comment removed

  • yay 339 xD

  • HAHA 338!!!!

  • Muwhahahaha, 336th!

  • 350th!

  • haha love the name of this song :3 its awesome..so is the song XP

  • Jonathan Coulton: the #1 reason I can't be emo.

  • Comment removed

  • Love this one

  • "feel free to purchase those...with your money"

  • he is soo damn good :)

  • hahah hes awsome!

  • Okay, so, I know I'll get flamed for this, but what exactly is a "shopvac"?

  • It's a type of vacuum cleaner used for industrial purposes, simply put. Think of a vacuum cleaner that can suck up damn near anything, including water, with no problem.

  • Thanks for being civil :)

  • @O1bo1 I had to vacuum up a cat with one not long ago

  • a vaccum

  • @plannedXaccident

    its a vacuum for a workshop :)

its a bit different then a regular vacuum i think >.>

  • @plannedXaccident No flame, only love man

  • @plannedXaccident If you haven't gotten an answer yet, a shopvac is a vacuum cleaner that doesn't use a bag, and has a larger hose. It can suck up things regualr vacuums can't, like water, and wet leaves, and mud, and they actually are pretty freaking awesome.

  • @plannedXaccident It's some kind of vaccum cleaner.

  • @plannedXaccident super vacuum that nobody uses anymore

  • If you imagine his wife upstairs committing suicide while he shopvacs his life away and can't hear her, it makes the song even more sinister and awesome. No? Just me?

  • Comment removed

  • "so you should feel free to purchase those, with your money" hahahahahahaha! i just shit my pants

  • Beautiful stuff this is. Just beautiful.

  • The great thing about JoCo is that he can mess up on stage, and he just shrugs it off, unlike other artists who are uptight and make everything perfect. Joco is great with the audience.

  • lol everyone here has pluses and minuses =] at least we can agree we all love Jonathan Coulton =D

  • YEAH!

  • Anyway, I'm buying the 50 dollar thing-a-week collectors edition. I never pay for music because those bastards dont deserve it, but JoCo is Indi so I think he needs it. I suggest you all buy it as well. Show some support!

  • I've never used a shopvac, but they seem really really, really, really, awesome. But the irony there is the fact that the day I finally get to use a shopvac, I'll realize they aren't that great....

  • I love my shop vac. The other day I went to the spa store to buy a pump to clean out my spa and the guy said "just use your shop vac". I'm totally a suburban dude! :)

  • @batvette Really? Weird, here it's always more expensive to live in the City.

Homes get steadily more expensive the closer to the city center you get.

  • @roidroid well I couldn't afford to buy the house I rent, but what you are saying is true as well it's probably that my white ghetto house sits on valuable land where in the 'burbs the land is less of the value than the house sitting on it. Make sense? I dunno. I'm actually about to use my shop-vac! (to clean my PS2)

  • @batvette it's not making sense to me.

    - Buying a house/land in the city is more expensive than buying a house/land in the suburbs yes?

    - Renting a house in the city is more expensive than renting a house in the suburbs yes?

  • @roidroid the house I live in is old and small, as are most in the city However the land is centrally located and thus worth more. the suburbs have much larger and modern houses but are on land that is less valuable. Renting a small old house is generally cheaper, and the long term value of the land for future development doesn't factor in unless I am buying.

  • @batvette Ah i see. So your urban areas are dilapidated.

In the citys here there is a housing shortage, so there's no such thing as a cheap small home in the city (to rent or buy). They've all been bought up, drastically modernised/renovated, and then resold to investors long ago.

  • wait wait wait...

this is a song about, bout a shopvac!

    awesome!

  • It's not really about a shop vac, more about suburban life.

  • i just love the shop vac part of it ^^

  • This is quickly becoming my favorite JoCo song. The perfect mix of humor and melancholy.

Thanks for posting this; I do greatly prefer the live version over the recorded version. If he didn't lose it and laugh near the end, it'd be perfect.

  • yeah man, this song rocks. in fact, the chorus is my ringtone:P

  • 4:13

"Skhyy" Man that was so funny! I think I died a little laughing so much.

  • this is a fantastic song, a little sad, but great

  • JC rocks :DD

  • cool song.

  • I love the hand claps in the chorus.

  • johnathan couldtons awesome and if you dont think so you can go screw a pig

  • Careful, some people like that :P

  • Is this actually filmed in nightvision? did he do the whole set as lit in videos one and two?

  • Yeah.

  • Got to wonder how he could see the fretboard properly.

  • To Notanotherspambot; If you play this a million times, you can just play it blindly. ^^ And he wrote the song, he knows it better than anyone else.

  • I love this song...

  • Looks like he makes a B9 chord: x2122x

  • what are the chords? his performance doesn't seem to match the chords given on his site, especially where there should be a "B" chord, he doesn't move his hands into any possible B formation.

  • I don't know the chords, but Youtube tends to not sync video and sound quite right. It's possible the video is delayed or the reverse so he "does" the chord at the wrong time.

  • This is a well written song.

  • this guy is halouruis if that is how u spell it but anyway this guy is great

  • That spelling is totally halouruis!

  • Halouruis indeed....

  • Halo-u-ruis? I can't even figure out how to pronounce that. haha. It is halouruis indeed

  • (Hall)-(our)-(oo)-(iss)

  • Hilarious?

  • Hill-air-e-us

    or

    Hi-lair-e-us

  • yayaya i love this guy :D

  • i'm asking why the glass... great songs

  • I have a shopvac, and it's awesome, they can suck up ANYTHING, even large shards of glass(don't ask)!

  • I have one, I think im going to go get it and shopvac all my stuff and complain about losing everything

  • shards of glass?! You've been busy. ;)

  • LOL he can sing about anything and make it entertaining this proves it

  • lmao so true

  • what is a shopvac?

  • He says "its hard to make a left turn", not love turn =P

  • ture

  • ROFL!!

"I like the starbucks here thats better than the other one cause the other one is not is good. They really need to put a light there cause its hard to turn! Its hard to make a left tuuuUUURN!"
