@thelawley1 a small pod-like vacuum cleaner used in industrial settings and for cleaning up things that a regular vacuum cleaner lacks the power to suck up.
@thelawley1 "ShopVac" Is a compound of the words Workshop Vacuum. Which is a specially designed vacuum that can pick up, loose dirt, sawdust, trash, nails, screws, and some can clean up water. They are designed to be more powerful, robust, and durable, than a typical household vacuum, due to their use in the harsher environments of a workshop. The term "ShopVac" was copyrighted as a name brand by a popular manufacturer of these type of vacuums.
this was the first joco song i ever heard, which got me started, and i got addicted to JoCo music. I bought a bass cause meh i always wanted to play bass plus i couldn;t find an acoustic sooo......anyway he is my idol and he is fuckin awesome so those 8 diislikes up there, i'm gonna find you
Do a search for this song and you'll find an amazing video of this song with kinetic type + what you could call the "deluxe" JoCo version (back-up vocals and such). Really gives the song some momentum.
@tejaswoman It's called the studio version. Some people like to make recordings that aren't live, so they go to this place called a studio and they get recorded! They can add as many vocal tracks as they want because it's not live, unlike this!
@RockerGeek28 And your point is? ... because mine was that unlike most JoCo songs, this one is the rare case where the live version doesn't hold a candle to the studio. Nearly every other song he does, the live version has its own charm; this one, I've seen several different live performances and it just doesn't compare to the studio track.
Is it just my dirty mind that took it as JoCo having sex with it? It's loud with the shopvac on, drunken sex, etc. Anywho, if you haven't thought of it that way give it a second listen and it's a lot funnier.
@rundiwolf Couldn't agree more. Coulton is almost completely unrecognised where I live, and everyone listens to Twits of Leon. It's quite depressing now that I think of it.
This guy's got a great approach to live performance. I started watching all the songs in performance order. You could tell he was nervous at first (he did First of May 50% faster than the album version), but he really started to to warm up on this one. There's not many performers who can mess up a chord on stage and laugh at himself/keep going at the same time.
I like that plannedXaccident's comment was OVER A YEAR AGO and he's still getting responses, within three days. Anyhow... I think this is one of my favorite JoCo songs. :D
@Naturality its a drivin pun when your driving your not supposed to make a left turn unless the lines are broken and when your on a main road almost all left turns are not legal
@ShadowDuffle That, like a road that leads onto a highway, you have all that oncoming traffic, its easy to turn right to go with the flow of traffic but sometimes it seems impossible to turn left with out a stoplight.. Its a common complaint among people who live on a street like that..
@smoke770077 !! Thank you for explaining that! I live in a small town that doesn't have any heavy traffic, main street included, and the highway is built away from the town.
So I got that "hard to make a left turn" was supposed to be a joke, but didn't know why.
@Naturality i dont think it's the meaning of the "left turn" part, it's how he actually made his voice break when he sang it. "it's hard to make a left turnnnnnnnnnn"
this is the 4th vid of him in this cafe that people have walked infront of the cam...i swear next one ill throw a shoe at! (reference to boot to the head Phoenix Wright)
He's just thinking out loud while trying to explain the song he's about to perform. Not everyone can maintain their thoughts perfectly while performing in public.
It's a type of vacuum cleaner used for industrial purposes, simply put. Think of a vacuum cleaner that can suck up damn near anything, including water, with no problem.
@plannedXaccident If you haven't gotten an answer yet, a shopvac is a vacuum cleaner that doesn't use a bag, and has a larger hose. It can suck up things regualr vacuums can't, like water, and wet leaves, and mud, and they actually are pretty freaking awesome.
If you imagine his wife upstairs committing suicide while he shopvacs his life away and can't hear her, it makes the song even more sinister and awesome. No? Just me?
The great thing about JoCo is that he can mess up on stage, and he just shrugs it off, unlike other artists who are uptight and make everything perfect. Joco is great with the audience.
Anyway, I'm buying the 50 dollar thing-a-week collectors edition. I never pay for music because those bastards dont deserve it, but JoCo is Indi so I think he needs it. I suggest you all buy it as well. Show some support!
I've never used a shopvac, but they seem really really, really, really, awesome. But the irony there is the fact that the day I finally get to use a shopvac, I'll realize they aren't that great....
I love my shop vac. The other day I went to the spa store to buy a pump to clean out my spa and the guy said "just use your shop vac". I'm totally a suburban dude! :)
Not sounding too prickly, as I'm really not a fan of this music, however I understand and appreciate his message, and my reply of course has ironic relevance. I don't have the problem of his fictitious life as sung, there are people all around me, the urban center is alive and vibrant and I've had so many real friends in the 14 years I've lived here I could just poop myself. But all that has it's own problems, I'd give anything for a big suburban garage. (My shopvac even has a name: Johnco 2000)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is funny. I can't afford to live in the suburbs, I live in the white ghetto-now being revitalized until yuppies force me out because of the housing boom but postponed by the real estate crash part of town. I could never get away with running a shop vac since my neighbors are 7 feet away each side of me. I bought one anyway and spent a month designing an enclosure, it's virtually silent. Jonathon couldn't understand this because he doesn't realize you clean up AFTER you work. In shop.
@roidroid well I couldn't afford to buy the house I rent, but what you are saying is true as well it's probably that my white ghetto house sits on valuable land where in the 'burbs the land is less of the value than the house sitting on it. Make sense? I dunno. I'm actually about to use my shop-vac! (to clean my PS2)
@roidroid the house I live in is old and small, as are most in the city However the land is centrally located and thus worth more. the suburbs have much larger and modern houses but are on land that is less valuable. Renting a small old house is generally cheaper, and the long term value of the land for future development doesn't factor in unless I am buying.
@batvette Ah i see. So your urban areas are dilapidated.
In the citys here there is a housing shortage, so there's no such thing as a cheap small home in the city (to rent or buy). They've all been bought up, drastically modernised/renovated, and then resold to investors long ago.
This is quickly becoming my favorite JoCo song. The perfect mix of humor and melancholy.
Thanks for posting this; I do greatly prefer the live version over the recorded version. If he didn't lose it and laugh near the end, it'd be perfect.
what are the chords? his performance doesn't seem to match the chords given on his site, especially where there should be a "B" chord, he doesn't move his hands into any possible B formation.
I don't know the chords, but Youtube tends to not sync video and sound quite right. It's possible the video is delayed or the reverse so he "does" the chord at the wrong time.
"I like the starbucks here thats better than the other one cause the other one is not is good. They really need to put a light there cause its hard to turn! Its hard to make a left tuuuUUURN!"
It's cool to compare his earlier performances with some of the newer ones.
