I live here, it is pretty much the best venue in history of concerts to sing THIS song. At least 100k, Red Square is HUGE, takes 10 minutes to walk across it..., gives you an idea how packed this place was. Plus the history of the surrounding buildings you see, is beyond words. Check out Pauls other songs from Red Square, this ain't a USA crowd.

I am a Canadian, yet to see the reaction of the Russian fans cheering about a song of them, written back when the Beatles never entered te USSR, I felt the feeling go right through me as they did. The effect this song had was interesting to the communist youth: "Wait... what's so bad about the west? They sound alright to me... " And it kind of brought the two cultures together to say that no matter what, they were still human.

how do you think the 60's generations were so bleeping crazy and selfish....its because as children we were taught bomb drills how to hide under our desks....practise evacuations etc..I imagine USSR did kids too.... till 1989 I don't remember not expecting my life to be cut short by nuclear winter or direct bombardment.....you kids try enjoy and try to make happy...tired of all this jingoism...

The effect this song had was interesting to the communist youth: "Wait... what's so bad about the west? They sound alright to me... " And it kind of brought the two cultures together to say that no matter what, they were still human.

The USSR and BOAC have gone, but Paul McCartney is still going strong.
What strikes me most is the age of the audience - they're all kids (which is fine). Same as the audiences he drew with Beatles back in 1962.
If you're Paul McCartney do you think you'd have this sense of time mysteriously standing still? No matter how long he goes on performing, the girls in the audience stay the same age ... and they're still screaming for him.

A profound simple idea juxtaposing the rock and roll idiom of Chuck Berry and the Beach Boys with the the obvious chorus that yes Russians love their country too. . . Rock´n´Roll Music is something given by a higher instance and of course it can sweep away stupid ideologies. In the 70s even some musicians said that their own music could not do that - we have seen the proof against it later on.
Never get too desperate, have a bit patience - music solves it !

Are you old enough to remember when the Beatles started? They were banned from the USSR. Why - because they were considered to be harmful to the society. In fact, the Russian teenagers were not allowed to wear their hair cut like the Beatles or own Beatle Records! Yea, so much for communism. People who came from Russia to America - does not seem to have your same feelings.

America was founded on the idea of people being having the freedom. But some people like for the government to make decisions for you. And that, my friend, is the difference.

@harris3693 there is one problem. When communism ruled, the Beatles were banned from Russia. The government dictated no one could grow their hair like the Beatles and no one could own their records. The Beatles were poster children of the evil cultures of free countries. That is why this concert in Red Square is so celebrated.
