Great review as always Pixel Dan. I just got my Red Lion from Mattel in the mail today and I have no regrets!!! This thing is huge and looks very impressive in person. The pose in the box is even cool. Lance looks great too. It's a great time to be a Voltron fan. I will always love my Toynami Masterpiece Voltron, but this is a great addition to anyone's Voltron collection.
One letdown is that it looks like the Lion Head attack feature hasn't been built into him. It's unfortunate that with all the button activated, spring loaded gimmicks on the lions, that they couldn't have added another one.
I wish mattel would've made the pilots in scale with the lions and crafted cockpits into the lions heads like the cartoon. I think the 3' inch figures look silly in the lions.
Ok, seeing this I REALLY wish I'd signed up for two sets instead of just 1. I may have to buy an extra day-of so that I can display the lions AND Voltron... it would be better if they made the lions available sans pilot for day-of sales, but I can see why they wouldn't. I think they'd sell a lot more lions if they did, though.
Dan said that the number 2 was missing from the toy. But it seem that this toy is made to be "cartoon accurate with colors and such. The original toys had the numbers on the lions however I don't actually remember the numbers being on the lions themselves in the cartoon. That would look kinda weird.
Great job PIX, U killed it....I really enjoyed the detail that you went into with the articulation and functions of the Red Lion, Thanks man, That pretty much sealed the deal, despite a few minor discrepancies I think I will go with the line. Thanks man, see you in July at SDCC2012.
Glad to see the key isn't required to activate the autotransform features, I thought it looked a bit silly in the demonstration video. Can't wait to complete the set!
I think all Mattel had to do to "hit this out of the park" was combine the look & articulation of the Matchbox & Toynami Voltrons with the ability to have the individual pilots ride inside their respective lions that the Panosh Place Voltron could let you do.
I do think the end product looks good, but I don't think it's $50 + shipping good.
However, I'm already locked in to the sub, so I guess the joke's on me.
@MegaduceFlare I agree about the Toynami + Panosh equalling the best possible Lions we could have received. That would have been great. More articulation would have been a better way to go than the action feature.
While I do think the Lance figure looks good, the lack of wrist & ankle joints bug me. And the fact that neither head has any up or down range of motion, is just poor design.
Now as for the Red Lion, I would have GLADLY traded the action feature for heavy-duty joints in the legs & a waist swivel that would have served as a bicep swivel when combined.
these look really cool at first i thought it would be just the same old voltron as before but now it is filled with cool gimmicks and action features defiantly a must have
THIS is a high priced collectors piece!!! this is total crap!!! they should be selling these in toys r us for 5 year olds! no metal parts, stupid gimmicks and crap designs just to name alot of jarring problems, wtf mattel! normally i would not be raging over a toy but people are paying like nearly $100 for each of these things!
@digioverlord I am a bit worried about this one also. When I had the voltron die cast metal as a kid, it was very heavy. Great toy. So I don't really know about spending $50.
Nice review, Pixel-Man. This looks really great, but I can see that "action feature" as an annoyance when assembling and playing with the complete Voltron figure. Perhaps the actual release with have "hold" buttons to keep them from activating while in "limb" mode. I doubt it though.
@HulkSmashTime Yeah, the action feature is my least favorite part. I'm nervous to see how it will all work once Voltron is assembled, as I'm real worried about those buttons being too easiy to hit.
Looks to be complete garbage. No chrome, no painted number, front legs don't tuck up all the way, and a spring loaded transformation that hinders posability, when your average big-spending collector will want a manual transformation AND posability. Arm looks to be lacking a bicep swivel, which is unacceptable on a high priced collector's piece like this. MP Voltron is smaller, but looks to be far superior to this thing.
So Can't Wait For Mine! Awesome Review Dan! I know that the action feature can be a little annoying but overall for collectors and kids this what Voltron Fans like me want!
I was totally stoked about my sub until I saw the " action feature " ! I'm still excited cause c'mon , it's voltron !!... But that feature makes it more toy less collectible. But oh we'll , I'll probably be more excited getting two of these than two sets of the star sisters ! Shit
Damn that's huge lol. Too huge for me.... I'm really tempted by the SDCC action figure though. Is there gonna be a normal release of the action figure??
I'm still hoping for Bandai Japan to make a Chogokin Golion someday
@lostlegend667 You mean the 6" Blazing Sword Voltron I showed at the end of the video? There already was a standard release, on MattyCollector, and he sold out. Sorry man! I'm not sure if they will be re-relasing him, but it's always a possability.
@Mandalorian30 I'm going to get the black lion. I know that will be huge but the other lions is not poseable. The guns are glue onto the figures. Not a good idea, this is 2012, they have to step their game up.
@lostlegend667 If you're still looking for the smaller Voltron figure that Pixel Dan had at the end of the video, apparently it's going to go back on sale tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb 15th) around 12 PM Eastern / 9 AM Pacific time.
@MegaduceFlare Thanks. I was going to, along with Sourceless and maybe Fisto but I totally zoned out till 2pm lol. Eh I still got BBTS, all bundled there...
Thanks for this review, many of my concerns were laid to rest. I'm a subscriber and was wondering how the articulation was going to work, and seeing that awesome tight clicking articulation is such a relief! Going to be a long year indeed! Would be cool to also have a spare helmet for the figures to hold, but oh well. Having a 23" Voltron at the end of the year makes the lack of spare helmet a non-issue!!
...agree cat look huge!!....lol..pretty sure all humans and animals come with that transformation feature just push that button.in anybody's rear.XD...still dont know if I want it....but the size is going to be awsome!!
Adult collectors really want action features? I ordered these and wish the lions legs had the same if not more articulation as the masterpiece lions. Looks good but at the price point Mattel could of done better. Great video!
Wow showing the vintage toy next to the new one really shows how good of a job they did with this.
