  • I love Genia - but this variation is too slow.

  • Only variation EVER that I don't like her in!!

  • never as Rita Kulik...she was the best first shade ever...!!

  • I never get the point of this shade costume, with whatever company. I've seen no ballerina doing their best in them. It they insist on keeping the look, why not just make two sleeves instead of scarves tied to the bun (which is like a puppet string). BTW, the best I've seen in this variation is Yu Hui Choe.

  • @nicolezly

Yu Hui Choe from Royal Ballet? For me she isn't fast enough and she smiles too much, though I think all three shades from RB smile, I have no idea why, after all it's not happy and cheerful part of this ballet.

  • @looovecats I know what you mean, she does need some diversity of facial expression. However, both her facial and body language are so natural and true, her movement so clean, and perfectly on beat. For me this harmony is way more important than forced speed.

  • @looovecats - you are correct. smiles have no business in the opulent Shades scene, & never have. P{etipa would be appalled. Hands down, Margarita Kulik is the best I have ever seen in this solo, live or on film.

  • I love Obraztsova, she seems so sweet, but I do agree she appears off in this variation

  • hate the costume

  • musically???

  • She has such a fantastic feel for this variation! Technically, artistically, musically, everything. I feel like she's dancing it as it was meant to be from the beginning, a shade from the imperial days!

  • I'm really sorry, but I've seen her do much better than this. She's great, but she seems really off balance here. It might have been an"off" day for her, because she's usually lovely.

  • I agree with you, but I still love it because I can see character and style she gave to this variation.

  • I agree, I don't think this is her role or she just had a bad day like you wrote...

  • yeah but her lines are still the best even on an off day... shes better than somova and all the others in this video.

  • @DarlingCalamity

Yeah, she looks a little more stiff than usual, but I wish my "off days" looked like this.

  • @DarlingCalamity Babe we can all have bad days, I had one bad day and ended up living in a trailer with seven kids while their deadbeat dad was getting drunk in bars and spending our welfare on sex with crack whores.

  • This is the best I've ever seen this variation performed. However, I don't think it shows off Obraztsova's best attributes... Interesting casting choice I'd say. I'm biased, though, because I hate this variation. Still, OBRAZTSOVA RULES

  • the best interpretation of this solo I have ever seen was by Margarita Kulik - its on the VHS "The Kirov Ballet in London". She takes it very slow.

  • Yes, yes! That was an amazing performance from Kullik!

  • I agree with you. She's so fast and she dances so softly that she really looks like a shadow, you can't see preparations for pirouettes or jumps.

Pity, that she dances only shadow in Bayadere, I think she could be great Nikya.

  • I mean I agree with shipulinafan :).

  • omg She would be the perfect Nikya!!! She's such a wonderful actress... <3
