This is considered one of the worst decisions ever. Right up there with Lewis-Holyfield I, Louis-Walcott I, Ali-Norton III, Spinks-Holmes II. This decision was so controversial there was a Senate investigation into potential corruption.
Having said that, I think Alex Stewart and Dan Dierdorf misled the audience because they, like everyone, expected an easy win for Toney. If you watch it with the sound off, the fight was actually fairly close. Though I think Tiberi won.
McCallum refused to rematch Collins & was stripped of his WBA. McCallum admitted that Collins won the last 5 rounds of their fight & that if Collins would have fought at that same tempo earlier he (Collins) would have won the whole fight. McCallum admitted after the fight that Collins as his toughest opponent. So think of all of this when you read Vdentjr dumb/retarded post about Collins getting "his shit pushed in" by McCallum. Vdentjr simply looked at records and came to his silly conclusion.
@jorgekluney seriously man are you related to steve collins or something?? you have an almost obsessive infatuation with the guy who was a second rate fighter who made a name off beating washed up champions and losing to mike mccallum. and even with all this senseless rambling you STILL havent managed to explain why your knight and shining armor beats toney, thats pathetic.
the refs really fu.cked tiberi during this fight. A discgrace. A turning point in the history of boxing, in which the sport began to lose its zeal and credibility. Tiberi; the true middleweight champ.
@vdentjr LOL!!! Seriously man? Do you know anything about McCallum v Collins? Guess who McCallum said he would never fight again?? Steve Collins. His quote on Collins "I never wanna fight dat guy again". And guess what, genius. McCallum who trains other boxers has been quoted as saying that Collins WOULD beat James Toney.
@jorgekluney okay, and how exactly does that support your claim?? mccallum was reaching the tail end of his career and had been in many wars prior to to that, so no shit at that point of his career would he say something like that, and what does mccallums opinion mean? mccallum and toney had a very heated rivalry and they damn near hated eachother. so again, no brainer he would say something like that. if you dont have any REAL points about that matchup then just log off and dont come back.
@vdentjr You think 1990 was the tail end of McCallum's career? Then you're an idiot who doesn't know squat about the man. That was not his reason for not wanting to rematch Collins. He said Collins was one of his toughest fights he had. SO much for you referencing McCallum's fight with Toney because that happened 6 fights after the supposed "twilight" of McCallum's career. Toney struggled and lost against f'n Tiberi. Steve Collins beats your boyfriends ass.
@jorgekluney you still havent even begun to explain why collins beats toney, have you ever even heard the old saying styles makes fights? and what in collins face forward , wide punching style do you see would overcome a fighter who utilizes brillant upper body mvement, throws short, hard puches on the inside and long accurate shots on the outside? who has steve collins even beat for you to think that? an old shop worn nigel benn? the zombie of chris eubank? whom he struggle with might i add.
Toney showed his heart and determination this fight it was also an indication that it was time to start moving up because the weight drain was killing him much how he lost to Roy because he was weak from making weight
Tiberi got screwed but I cannot blame James Toney. He had nothing to do with that egregious decision. And in truth his shoulder rolling did result in blocking a lot of Tiberi's shots. It was a very tactical fight.
Toney's showing was in part due to the fact that he had real trouble making weight and basically had to starve to make it.
Beneath all of the heel persona that is James Toney is a smart savvy fighter. Floyd Mayweather Jr perfected Toney's shoulder rolling.

james toney is a fat fucking bum... hahaha two of his wins are listed as two of the greatest robberies of all time according to compubox... HAHAHAHA toney is a bum... he just got replaced by arreola as the fattest heavyweight in dan goosen's stable
Tiberi won for sure. My uncle Mark was his manager at the time. He fought so hard to talk the people into giving the title to tiberi, ... had them watch videos in slow mo about a headbutt, etc... Pretty crazy call.
What class by Tiberi to not harbor one ounce of animosity toward Toney and to shake hands with him afterward.
Some say this was a boring fight but it had a lot of drama and for a knowledgable fighter it was a clinic on tactics. Two of the best boxing tacticians of that time. They were playing chess it seemed.
disgraceful decision. i like toney but this is utter, bullshit. Brugality, I hope you're kidding, otherwise it is 'clear' you don't date, (women at least).
i think the judges used the only 7 kos (believe me i understand that means he knocked seven professional boxers out) to justify giving this decision away to toney
I have really never saw much of this fight. When it was televised I didn't bother watching it because I felt that it was a mismatch.Ironically it was one of the most controversial decisions in history. At his best, Toney would have easily won,and because of his weight problem at that time, I think some judges give a champion the edge when they may be aware he is not at his healthiest. Some blacks feel that they would be robbed in such situations, this and some other fights should prove them wrong
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
James won this fight. Yes he looked like shit, but he WON this fight with accurate punching. Tiberi just threw 100 punches around while a tired out of shapy Toney countered and picked his shots. This "highlight" is pure biased CRAP.
James Toney is one of my all-time favorite fighters and one of the most skilled boxers ever, but he could have spared himself a lot of these situations back in the day if he hadn't tortured himself to make 160. The guy was a 200 pound football player in high school, it's a miracle he didn't do more damage to himself. Even at 168 against Roy, he was on an I.V. the night before the fight.
this is a damn shame. I see dave at the gym a lot and chat with him and talk to the rest of his family and i have never seen footage of it until now..and i'm appalled. Dave has done tons of work towards cleaning up boxing and making sure fights like this will never happen again. And as far as toney goes...he was pretty good once...even at this point in his career his slipping into over-indulgent punch-drunk bullshit...
More ridiculous is he never took the rematch at 169 that was offered, denying it as some kind of statement. That was dumb. When a club fighter gets a shot at 6 fig payday, you gotta take it.
My brother and I saw this fight on TV and I remember feeling, in my novice opinion, that Tiberi CLEARLY won...interesting to find out that it was a big time controversy and not just our opinion. good posting, thanks!
I used to train with Dave's brother Joe down in Delaware City, DE and my dad worked with him so we were all big fans of Dave. I still have this fight on tape and still regard it to this day as the biggest rip off in boxing history. Toney had an off night, but this was Dave's victory...hands down.
Cool! I watched this fight live and the name "Dave Tiberi" sort of became an acronym for "ripped off" in my house afterwards. As in, "The bastard at Wendy's Tiberi'd me, he forgot my cheeseburger!" My dad's not a big fight fan but he I remember him thinking Dave was a class guy who clearly got "Tiberi'd" on this night. It was terrible, but let's be clear--it's not like he was victim to a giant conspiracy...it didn't work that way. It was incompetence and NOT a cover-up or something.
See that's the thing, everyone has this notion that the only square in a prizefight is the ring. That's just hogwash. It's 1930s mobster speak. The game is so clean now at the referee/judging level...I'd think more of Dave if he said, I thought I won but I lost by the judges. Instead he makes himself out as the victim of this grand conspiracy. I'll tell you this...from the fight I saw, I can see it going either way. Tiberi landed more shots but Toney CLEARLY had the power edge.
Let's be clear here, it's not just 1930s mobster speak. Boxing is a very easy fight to fix and that's why it's been such a victim of this over the years including up until today. I won't say the judges were paid off or anything like that, but I won't dismiss the idea that it could be true either. Whatever happened, it was clear to me that Tiberi won the fight...he was more aggressive, throwing more punches, and had Toney was doing nothing to try and win.
It is 2 AM in my one room apartment, my wife is sleeping, and I just about woke her up with my laughter over "Tiberi'd"!!! The cheeseburger line was HILARIOUS...thanks, I needed that. Moreover, my bro and I watched this live (was it on in the afternoon or something weird?) and we couldn't believe that Toney got the decision...Tiberi'd indeed sir!!!
Okay, I remember this as being a bad decision too. And, I know that there are some passionate posts on here BUT let me say that, on what little I saw, it was clear that Toney DID have the clear edge in power...I really want to watch the whole fight to be sure but this time around, from THOSE HIGHLIGHTS (again, not the whole fight) that it wasn't AS BAD as I thought it was (the decision). Please upload the rest. And just so you all know, I HATE Toney and I want to give DT the benefit of doubt.
One of the worst screwjobs ever, in any sport. Toney even admits now that he lost the fight. Can't blame Toney for the decision though. He's a helluva fighter. His win over Nunn says it all, who was considered unbeatable.
