I put this one up especially for you. You were telling me you really wanted some of my beans a few weeks ago. I know you don't like the rice, but you don't have to make that. You can just cut up a few carrots and toss in and you have bean soup.
Yeah, ah get into character when I'm cooking southern comfort foods.
p.s. just made this last night, substituting the bouillon & water for swanson's organic vegetable broth and it tasted fab! ...I think I sampled the Pinot Noir a little too much though.
Coolsome! Yeah, I think I had a little too much of the Pinot myself! Ha! I'm glad you tried it. I'll have to remember the Swanson's Organic Vegetable Broth for my vegetarian friends. Thanks!
That looked so good I could almost taste it. Unfortunately I can't make it because we don't have many of those ingredients here in England. But I can make many other delicious dishes, so I guess that's OK.
Hmmmm? Really? Well, maybe you can substitute some of the ingredients. You do have black beans, right? And rice? Spices? Onion? Garlic? Salt, pepper...what else are you missing? I know you've got wine. Ha!
Kim, the 2 main ingredients black beans and bouillon cubes are not normally available in our supermarkets. However I might be able to get the beans in a health food store, as they normally stock many pulses. The cubes, under the Maggi brand, may be available in a specialist food store. So I guess I have to be less lazy in my shopping habits. Online I found out that they are both very popular in the southern states, so maybe you can get them more easily.
Derek~ Oh wow. I just assumed beans were a world wide staple. My bad. You can also use real chicken broth instead of the cubes. I just didn't have any on hand. The cubes are a staple for me too.
Thank you PuppyZwolle. I have become aware that Knoor chicken stock cubes are the same, and indeed they call them bouillons on their website. I did wonder if I could get the beans canned, but I think they would have lost their flavour in processing.
They only are softer but as that kinda is where they are going you should be fine. The taste is very very close...usually. As fresh is not an option in the UK I'd go for it.
Now listen Puppy, you don't have to put in as much garlic as I do. In fact, if I had more, I would have probably added it. I eat a lot of garlic all the time, especially during the winter. It fights off colds. (Probably because you smell so bad, nobody wants to kiss you and spread their cooties!) Ha!
I don't pre-soak my black beans because they are so tiny. I never have found any of the "so-called tricks" to remove the gas to work anyway. Ha. However, I will soak larger beans overnight, such as pinto and navy, simply because it cuts down on the cooking time and saves energy.
Yes! Please show me your black and white soup! It sounds so good.
That looks good, I fix red beans and rice all the time with sausage and garlic and onions and other stuff, but that looks so good, I will have to try that, where do you find Jasmine rice? Thanks for sharing.
Oh I like red beans and rice with sausage too! Yummy! I get the Jasmine rice in the international aisle of the market. Kroger, Biggs, Meyer, etc. You can find it just about anywhere. The aroma is beaUtifUl and it tastes great too. I think I am addicted.
I declare, lil' darlin', y'all have set my lil' ol' heart aflutter in anticipation of a mighty fine bunch o' beans and rice that are to die for! Much obliged, Miss Dali!
Thanks for sharing this! Always on the prowl for new winter foods... mmm, beans and rice. I'll have to replace the chicken bouillon with something vegetarian, but I'm looking forward to trying your recipe.
The weather doesn't get cold here until Feb. I will be looking this up then. I think I might lay out on my porch tomorrow and catch some rays, now that I think about it!
I'm really going to make this soon, I swear! :)

'Bouillon cubes' are the same as 'stock cubes'. You can get those in the shops.
Some supermarkets have canned black beans.

HA! I was wondering what had happened to the colour in your world!!! So you don't pre-soak the beans - just go straight to cooking?
I will have to show you my black and white soups some time (black beans and white beans) - VERY good!!

Yes, you can replace the chicken boullion with something vegitarian. I wanted to say that but forgot. What would you use instead?
daligoddess2006 3 years ago
I'll probably try replacing the water with vegetable broth and see how that goes.
