@giro227Although I agree with many aspects of your basic suspicions my reasons were a bit different. @giro227 I can't speak from personal experience or about Japanese martial art schools, but according to many friends and acquaintances who travel to China and Taiwan, Kung Fu is more popular with foreigners than with native Chinese. Apparently, most Chinese parents don't want their kids learning kung fu. They consider it a distraction and want their kids to focus on academics, getting into a good college, etc. rather than learn an ancient martial art.

Yes,I like to xp's Japanese things 100% Japanese

Worst is how they use Chinese soy, which has a salty-sweet taste,as apposed to Japanese soy, which has a salty-vinegar taste
@giro227 As a white guy, I agree with the stereotypical ideal of white colonial arrogance being very bad, but everybody is different. I did well enough in Kendo tournaments in Japan, and my father is a third generation teacher in line from the originator of Aikido. Homophobic, racist comments are just the sort of thing you would expect from the "white guys who always think they are the best" that you are so critical of. Do you also have a problem with Japanese baseball leagues?or cricket in India?
Martial arts teach you how to fight to show how vulnerable one is so you can appreciate your own life and avoid it ultimately.. (wow that sounds a bit like miyiagi-son).. Also defending yourself at home with an iado sword is a bit impractical given the close proximity of the walls..

Against a man with a gun, the closer, the better, at under 4 feet or so, the odds come close.

You people can not seroiusly generalize a silencer. It varys on the brand, leangth, matireal, and weapon it's used with ( bid deal). But say if you have a weapon like a walther p99 (9mm with a walther brand silencer the weapons decibel level will be VERY low. You WILL not hear it in the next room. The sound of the body hitting the floor would be louder. Using a Hallow point will make it so the bullet does not exit the body, thus no impact noise. Quiet and deadly.
I think both are important weapons. Swords are meant to kill and guns are meant to kill fast. Although if I don't want to jeapardize the life of an opponent i would prefer a sword.
I think it is stupid to debate if a sword is better than a gun.. a gun will always beat a swordsman unless he's a highlander who can't be killed without getting his head cut off.. but please please stop insulting the sword.. it is a martial art that teaches discipline and honour more than anything else.. even among the samurai the main form of battle was with the bow and arrow and long spear.. the sword was mainly used for honour fights..
Regarding sword v. gun, there's a reason modern militarys don't train with swords. But for personal protection, it's worth knowing the training and strategy of the sword.
using a gun requires some skill, but not as much as a katana.
skill vs skill dosnt come up too much in projectile weaponry, more of enviormental factors. but learning to use your enviorment can be a skill in any combat
im just saying that people; when thinking about swords think that the one with the gun is useless at close range when they could have had some kind of training{ for when they are in that situation} when they should be thinking about the skills of BOTH sword/gun users
and plus there are guns in japan DUHHHHH it's illegal but who follows the rules?
Katana is still highly effective against guns in close quarters combat. House, for example, ambushes can b set up at the doorways, etc. And many weapons can b used same way as a katana, bo, stick, knife, whatever. Kenjutsu, Ninjutsu, and Aikijutsu are still superior martial arts worth practicing. As for killing ... don't even worry about it. If you have to, then you can comfort yourself that you did not have a choice and they deserved it. Defending country or family, for example.
I think the only advangae any blade would have over a firearm is if you need to "take out" someone quietly. Even then when the intruder's headless corpse hits the floor I am sure it's going to make a loud noise.
In a home invasion I'll take a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot over anything else. I don't care how good you are you aren't dodging a wall of lead coming your way at 1500fps.
Mastering a sword is an art and skill I highly respect, just not very practical for home defense.
"In a home invasion I'll take a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot over anything else. I don't care how good you are you aren't dodging a wall of lead coming your way at 1500fps."
Very true, however if you can't don't or won't own a firearm an edged weapon is a good option (and less risky around children) but you make a good point.
@frankthespank Maybe not in America, but in Japan firearms are illegal and this kind of training can be very effective. The police do not even have guns where I am in Japan, but they are trained in Judo.
@frankthespank you know shooting something with shaky hands in close quarters isn't as easy as in movies. a sword however... it's hard to miss something with.
@frankthespank As a decorated martial artist and marksmen of the U.S. Army and Rangers, I would rather melee combat skills during a close quarter combat such as in a home invasion.
Anything shorter than 15 feet with no obstacle or up to 25 feet with obstacles.
@visno u can still hear a silencer it just doesnt echo and decrease the distance and volume of noise u could hear it from the next room piss ur pants and jump out a window.....yep
frankthespan, You are at a hotel, no guns, no access to one & you cant get one, now what? What will you use to defend?
You just had a nasty earthquake, you are just trying to get water & you are being attacked for what you have, no guns available, you have no other real weapon at your reach, NOW WHAT?
Just saying, Guns are not always around, you do not always have access to one, and if you carry & get caught it is a misdemeanor, a simple stick or cane can be used like a sword to defend, learn.
@frankthespank I agree it's not effective for home defense. Mostly that there's not typically enough room in a house to use a sword. I myself am intending to get a concealed as soon as I'm 21 in 6 months. But I enjoy martial arts for self defense for right now. I've had a gun pulled on me actually, less than half a second later it was in my hands pointed at him.
@Jackoffpuppies *** continueing last post*** Ever since that I've trained much harder. It's nice to know that just because i do not have a weapon doesn't mean I can't fight back, it really puts my mind at ease.
@frankthespank the thing is it does take awhile to use a gun its not like your gonna have a gun thats loaded and out of safety ready to fire the moment a guy with a sword comes at you am i right? either way it takes a very short time to swing a katana..i think it takes me about a second if i round it to the nearest second (dont have a great camera to check exactly how fast) and i dont even train to swing it fast i just ..well swing
@frankthespank On the other hand, having skills with a sword could be useful for close quarters combat. Granted, any spec. Ops member without proficient skill in firearms would be a sitting duck, having experience with alternative modes of lethality can be useful. Furthermore, skills with a sword can come in handy in a situation where firearms are not an option, such as in a streetbrawl where any random rod or pipe could be effectively used as a sword. Swords make good backup tools.
@frankthespank its not very practical... unless you dont have a gun, and you know the person that broke into ur house and ur like... "holy shit i know you... i wanna make u suffer, not kill you" and just like, cut the fuck out of him xD
@Arteanor ....Firstly How sexist can you get? So because i do or speak about martial arts i have to be a guy? and all i said was "you do know there is more then martial arts in asia" To see you get so worked up about it shows me thatyou have no control ..So i can guess you are actually just speaking about it and do not know it. honestly insulting is so pointless....and mean.
using the male pronoun in the absence of definitive identifiers of sex is NOT sexist...
i never said u must be a guy... would u prefer if i used child?
how did i get worked up? you were rude and condescending, i mirrored your structure and threw your own shit in your face... dont like it? maybe u shouldnt spout BS....
i dont need to be insulting, your the one who came to me challenging my comment, next time, how bout u read it first and quote me fully or STFU.
nananna if you want to speak about quoting and then say when you said guy and you did not mean it you are being completely hypocritical of your first statement. do you want to be specific or dont you. i was not being condescending i was simply saying their is more out there. If you felt insulted then that is your problem not mine. but you obviously do have a attitude problem and your problem as i said is not mine. Anyone can read and see who was really rude so i know you can. CioaXD
are you human? or huwoman? i assumed male pronoun. did you think this in some way invalidates the rest of my entire valid dismissal of your baseless attempt to challenge my original post.
its quotemining, but even worse, its a misquote, entirely interrupted mid sentence.
if you expect people to accept this kind of shit and kiss your ass while you spout off at them while you do it... you must be out of your fucking mind.
nobody was challenging you. you just felt demeaned and like i said its a personal problem....btw your word play sucks. you only want something to apply when it fits you but you do not want to be so specific if it is against you. you are a sad little man.
@InfiniteSin1 Get some reading comprehension. Arteanor was referring to the frauds who claim to teach ninjitsu. Bujinkunts deserve all the scorn and derision they get. They're studying a made-up, meaningless 'system' made up by some fatass redneck who borrowed all his material from Hollywood.
@halfassedfart wtf is you peoples problem gawd? i never said it waaaas real so how can you get on me about comprehension when you are not? All i said was there is more martial arts then what is in asia...or did i say japan...well regardless :P
@halfassedfart yes it did, i was trying to say he could do a different art if he did not trust or believe in ninjutsu teachers. The fact is everyone on youtube is so quick to flame but not think.
@InfiniteSin1 See, the problem here is that you think ninjitsu is a martial art. It's not. The bloody Narutards and Bujinkunts that think so can all go jump off a fucking cliff.
Mentioning ninjitsu in the same breath as an actual martial art is a mortal insult to the latter.
i can cut some one down in clod blood or i can shoot there fucken brains out with my glock
being a man dose not have a thing to do with carrying a weapon. it has to do with being able to stand up for whats right and stopping people form doing whats wrong even if it means taking there life ... it`s better to take one persons life to save a thousand well that's my idea
maggot6460, bushido is a beautiful concept. I practice Aikido, but you have to be realistic. To kill someone with a sword these days is ridiculous. People(including you) don't carry swords when walking down the street. And what are the chances of a sword match outside of a dojo? So to kill someone with a sword would have to be indeed premeditated, and there is not much bushido in that. You have all the right to protect your family, I just don't see how a sword would do the job against guns.
@dionreedsamurai Depends how you look at history. Muskets were widely used by Samurai and even manufactured in Japan until the nation wide ban. Superior military might of the West was a part of what drove Japan to open-up, but it was more about economics. The Meiji restoration was good for Japan.
@JohnColt no actually it does not depend on anything: guns ended the widespread training of any "old world" warrior, including the samurai. why do you need to put up with the samurai nobility comprised of warriors who have trained all their lives when now you can hand a bunch of idiots some guns and teach them to use it in a week and be able to overpower the samurai? and sure the Meiji was good for Japan economically but it was not good for the samurai.

what you people are thinking of is a dumbass with a gun and highly skilled swordsman
but if you make that dumbass a badass gunslinger
ITS obvious that the badass will kill the swordsman

using a gun requires some skill, but not as much as a katana.
skill vs skill dosnt come up too much in projectile weaponry, more of enviormental factors. but learning to use your enviorment can be a skill in any combat
cooltokes 1 year ago
@lovelessAlx Guns are illegal in Japan, so this kind of training is practical there.
RJPBurtonBoards 1 year ago
@RJPBurtonBoards i wasn't talking about in JAPAN
im just saying that people; when thinking about swords think that the one with the gun is useless at close range when they could have had some kind of training{ for when they are in that situation} when they should be thinking about the skills of BOTH sword/gun users
and plus there are guns in japan DUHHHHH it's illegal but who follows the rules?
i bet some rich japanese have guns OBVIOUSLY
think about it :P

Very true, however if you can't don't or won't own a firearm an edged weapon is a good option (and less risky around children) but you make a good point.
aldenone 1 year ago
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, you will not run out of rounds :-)
aldenone 1 year ago
@frankthespank Maybe not in America, but in Japan firearms are illegal and this kind of training can be very effective. The police do not even have guns where I am in Japan, but they are trained in Judo.

@frankthespank
The most obvious advantage is that a blade doesn't need ammo.
goremand 1 year ago
@frankthespank you know shooting something with shaky hands in close quarters isn't as easy as in movies. a sword however... it's hard to miss something with.
EchoplexTheUltimatum 1 year ago
@frankthespank The blade probably doesn't run out of ammo I would think of that as the main advantage, but you are true in your statement.
Khaztarax 1 year ago
@frankthespank As a decorated martial artist and marksmen of the U.S. Army and Rangers, I would rather melee combat skills during a close quarter combat such as in a home invasion.
Anything shorter than 15 feet with no obstacle or up to 25 feet with obstacles.

frankthespan, You are at a hotel, no guns, no access to one & you cant get one, now what?

@frankthespank "if you need to "take out" someone quietly." wait, are you talking about home defence or home offence? °.o
CanadianSoldier67 1 year ago
@frankthespank the thing is it does take awhile to use a gun its not like your gonna have a gun thats loaded and out of safety ready to fire the moment a guy with a sword comes at you am i right? either way it takes a very short time to swing a katana..i think it takes me about a second if i round it to the nearest second (dont have a great camera to check exactly how fast) and i dont even train to swing it fast i just ..well swing

@frankthespank unless you're defending your home against zombies... :D a 12 gauge is too noisy for that
TerinsDerio 1 year ago
@frankthespank On the other hand, having skills with a sword could be useful for close quarters combat. Granted, any spec. Ops member without proficient skill in firearms would be a sitting duck, having experience with alternative modes of lethality can be useful. Furthermore, skills with a sword can come in handy in a situation where firearms are not an option, such as in a streetbrawl where any random rod or pipe could be effectively used as a sword. Swords make good backup tools.
Divinemotion 1 year ago
@frankthespank its not very practical... unless you dont have a gun, and you know the person that broke into ur house and ur like... "holy shit i know you... i wanna make u suffer, not kill you" and just like, cut the fuck out of him xD

i agreed with all of it until you said ninjutsu was still worth practicing...
the art of ninjutsu died over 40 years ago with Fujita Seiko.... look it up, fascinating man....
all we have left are frauds teaching MA and calling it ninjutsu...
Arteanor 1 year ago
@Arteanor frauds teaching martial arts? you are aware that more then japan and china have martial arts right?
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1
if your not gonna quote me in full, keep my name out your mouth boy.
frauds teaching martial arts AND CALLING IT NINJUTSU.
you are aware that i was speaking of the extinct art of ninjutsu right? an art that is in fact NOT martial at all.
so yes, as someone who clearly knows much more about martial arts than you, i would clearly understand that MA exist outside japan and china,
not that i ever even said that, but i appreciate that you tried to strawman me ;)
Arteanor 1 year ago
@Arteanor ....Firstly How sexist can you get? So because i do or speak about martial arts i have to be a guy? and all i said was "you do know there is more then martial arts in asia" To see you get so worked up about it shows me thatyou have no control ..So i can guess you are actually just speaking about it and do not know it. honestly insulting is so pointless....and mean.
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1
using the male pronoun in the absence of definitive identifiers of sex is NOT sexist...
i never said u must be a guy... would u prefer if i used child?
how did i get worked up? you were rude and condescending, i mirrored your structure and threw your own shit in your face... dont like it? maybe u shouldnt spout BS....
i dont need to be insulting, your the one who came to me challenging my comment, next time, how bout u read it first and quote me fully or STFU.
Arteanor 1 year ago
@Arteanor
nananna if you want to speak about quoting and then say when you said guy and you did not mean it you are being completely hypocritical of your first statement. do you want to be specific or dont you. i was not being condescending i was simply saying their is more out there. If you felt insulted then that is your problem not mine. but you obviously do have a attitude problem and your problem as i said is not mine. Anyone can read and see who was really rude so i know you can. CioaXD
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1
are you human? or huwoman? i assumed male pronoun. did you think this in some way invalidates the rest of my entire valid dismissal of your baseless attempt to challenge my original post.
its quotemining, but even worse, its a misquote, entirely interrupted mid sentence.
if you expect people to accept this kind of shit and kiss your ass while you spout off at them while you do it... you must be out of your fucking mind.
your right, anyone that can read...
Arteanor 1 year ago
@Arteanor
nobody was challenging you. you just felt demeaned and like i said its a personal problem....btw your word play sucks. you only want something to apply when it fits you but you do not want to be so specific if it is against you. you are a sad little man.
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1 Get some reading comprehension. Arteanor was referring to the frauds who claim to teach ninjitsu. Bujinkunts deserve all the scorn and derision they get. They're studying a made-up, meaningless 'system' made up by some fatass redneck who borrowed all his material from Hollywood.
halfassedfart 1 year ago
@halfassedfart wtf is you peoples problem gawd? i never said it waaaas real so how can you get on me about comprehension when you are not? All i said was there is more martial arts then what is in asia...or did i say japan...well regardless :P
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1 And that had nothing to do with Arteanor was saying, did it?
halfassedfart 1 year ago
@halfassedfart yes it did, i was trying to say he could do a different art if he did not trust or believe in ninjutsu teachers. The fact is everyone on youtube is so quick to flame but not think.
InfiniteSin1 1 year ago
@InfiniteSin1 See, the problem here is that you think ninjitsu is a martial art. It's not. The bloody Narutards and Bujinkunts that think so can all go jump off a fucking cliff.
Mentioning ninjitsu in the same breath as an actual martial art is a mortal insult to the latter.
halfassedfart 1 year ago
@halfassedfart ninjutsu is not a art? is bujinkan? or would tai jutsu be the art the ninjas learned? i dont know i am curious.

@biohazord24 Your idea sounds very noble, though I seriously doubt you'll be able to kill anyone ... I know I wouldn't ...
Venethor 1 year ago
maggot6460, bushido is a beautiful concept. You have all the right to protect your family, I just don't see how a sword would do the job against guns.

immortalisaac2 1 year ago
@dionreedsamurai Depends how you look at history. Muskets were widely used by Samurai and even manufactured in Japan until the nation wide ban. Superior military might of the West was a part of what drove Japan to open-up, but it was more about economics. The Meiji restoration was good for Japan.
JohnColt 1 year ago
@JohnColt no actually it does not depend on anything: guns ended the widespread training of any "old world" warrior, including the samurai. why do you need to put up with the samurai nobility comprised of warriors who have trained all their lives when now you can hand a bunch of idiots some guns and teach them to use it in a week and be able to overpower the samurai? and sure the Meiji was good for Japan economically but it was not good for the samurai.
