  • The video mentions a project that was done in SE asia. Where can I find more about that? From general information to the specifics, who was involved, how to replicate it. I know about permaculture in general, and also about forest gardening, but this specific project is new to me.

  • How could anyone vote this down? How sad that so much of humanity, especially the USA, actually worship death and long for the misery and destruction of humanity.

  • Fair share . . . reciprocity with the earth . . . the future is vegan . . .

  • A great video, simply done and a powerful message. However lets not forget that trees are only one plant species that are useful, grasses sequester more carbon in the short term and are the natural input for many mammals. Don't discard the humble grass, not all parts of our planet need to be forests!

  • Indeed Grasses Sequester Carbon short term and they do not however increase cloud formation nor do they adequately stabilise deforested land or prevent desertification sufficiently. In any case we are talking about reforesting land that used to be forest so natural grasslands should be unaffected.

  • @alspyjamas Permaculture designs always include systemic design starting with herbaceous species pioneers (usually nitrogen fixers) at the beginning of any food forest system. Simple observation will also make things clear if the normal evolution of the system does lead to a forest. If not, a system can be designed, using shrubs or any other plants similar to that present in the region we are designing for.

  • Permaculture GOOD news and should be shown on TV twice weekly. Stephen 's voice is persuading AND gentle. You can't help but take notice. I remember learning during geography, way back in Secondary school

[1960] that rain forests made clouds. I know many people that don't know this and who also poo-poo any idea that humankind has anything at al to do with our predicament! ! If only the scientists had had more foresight!!! Maybe we have time.Lets pursue, we have the grandchildren to think of!

  • I've been saying this for years... isn't it blatently obvious this needs doing. I ain't a friend of the earth or ought but rather than trying to stop the inevitable (because that's what it is), why not modify plants to grow in harsher environments and replace the shit load of trees we cut down... problem solved.....

  • Permaculture works without even having to modify the plants you just need to apply some carful ethical design. :-)

  • Permaculture is the best philosophy & technique ever!

  • Good video. I'd like to add that it's very important not to buy food with palm oil as an ingredient as palm oil demand has driven deforestation.

  • good vid. thanks for the tweet stephan if your paying attention to this?

  • Stephen Fry makes what would be just a power point presentation more compelling

  • I had to watch the video twice: on the first play-through I couldn't pay attention to the message of the thing, as I was distracted by Mr Fry's soothing tones.

  • More adverts need the delectable voice of Stephen Fry in them.

  • He really is amazing he nuanced everything in super quick time.

A few run throughs and then he nailed it in one continuous take.

  • Forest forever! Thanks Stephen - nice job - great message and a good way to put it across :)

  • Brilliant message! Be the change peeps . . . the future is vegan.

  • given that vegans consume vegetable matter, the future would, by your logic, be carnivorous.

  • Well I have logic, which says otherwise. However, from your comment we can easily deduce that it's you who is lacking in the logic department as well as being short on manners.

  • That or I have a sense of humour! :)

  • Maybe it's time for me to have a few more bananas . . .

  • A very thought-provoking video

    Thank you.

  • Thanks light surgery!

I have found that many people do not know that rainforests actually make clouds.

  • yes, but many people are retards

  • Maybe our government should be doing something about deforestation, and stop bitching at me with all this "switch off your TV" bullshit. The fucking cunts are spreading misinformation and false propaganda to try to make us think that climate change (if it exists, and if it is due to human activity) is OUR fault. Maybe this video makes more sense than I thought it did at first, and maybe this really is the way forward.

  • Unlike a lot of stuff that is proposed I suspect that the world could do with more forest anyway :-)

  • I propose we start with my devetegarianizing program. For every vegetarian we safely capture and put them in a responsibly sourced vegetable reserve, we shall plant a new tree!

  • nice comeback suitov lol x

  • Agreed, he has the most amazing voice.

  • It was a personal highlight to meet Stephen and he was both amazing and lovely.

  • Too many CAPITAL LETTERS, the 'emotive' music is annoying as hell, but Stephen Fry's voice saves what's otherwise a glorified Powerpoint presentation.

  • @suitov Why be so snobby? why criticize it at all? It doesn't claim to be some fancy state of the art advert, its just getting a point across. Don't be so negative.

  • My mistake. I thought this was a comment box for comments. :)

  • Hi Suitov,

If you would like to donate production facilities and better music we would be really delighted to improve the video on music. As a small NGO we have focussed our resources on doing the research and replanting rainforest and so any help we can get to improve the spread of the ideas is greatly appreciated.

    @liaonet

  • stop relenlessly breeding, eh breeders?

  • Great stuff, and interesting - but only preaches to the converted (sorry, but someone has to give some balance!). For example, there is a battle brewing up over 90 Billion barrels of oil underneath Artic Circle, and I dont think a video is going to put any of them off. Governments and Manufacturing Industry are largest and most dangerous culprits of global damage. And can effectively wipe out positive change in an instant, with a politically or financially motivated decision.

  • @jaffamonkey: *Sigh* and there I was, believing the villains of Captain Planet and FernGully were fictional characters. It seems they're closer depictions of reality than I might have first believed.

  • Hi Jaffamonkey,

I am here in COP15 in Copenhagen with out small team to make as much impact as possible. If you check the research on our website you can see that what we are promoting is enough to give us a breathing space to really have a chance to tackle issues like the unearthing of potentially another 90 Billion Barrels of Oil to feed our sorely oil addicted civilization. Lets face it if we do not do start taking action in every possible sustainable avenue we are not going to make it.

  • great clip, will retweet

  • Great message! 5 stars, favourited and tweeted.

  • Many many many thanks!

  • It's on my Facebook page, and I'll be ReTweeting Stephen Fry's original message.

  • Going to post this on facebook now!

  • Please Please Please share this vital message :-)
