I couldn't find this information on the website. Jo Hamilton says it has 8 light sensors each with three levels, giving one 24 keys. What type of note pattern is used?
wow that was beautiful and i bet it took a lot of practice for that man to learn how to use it. i say he needs a big applause for that beautiful piano playing
Ok this video is what I was wanting to see, and what I idealized the functionality to be. Pianos are obsolete and HUGE. There's now little reason to stick with wooden instruments, aside from a potential worldwide catastrophe that would render electronics useless.
@TorksonPds It might remind people of a theremin, but the airpiano is actually a completely different instrument. Different technology, different interaction, different features. You will soon learn more about it.
I have heard of these type of instruments. Some people made one similar for a paraplegic man. He would hold a drum stick in his mouth and wave it over this black bar and it would play different notes depending on where he would wave his stick.
Very funny !! Looks like he just rehearsed the hand movements to the song and performed it... i'd like to see the ableton file move with his hand movements. Also the air piano looks like a 1by4 with some plastic on top and a fake cable attached... nice try wise guy.
the stupid ones are the ones calling it stupid.. This is for real, using infrared emitters and sensors through a midi interface.. Not science fiction, but science fact. If you want to see weird.. you need to see the Moog Theremin.. THAT is hard to believe, but true.
The hand motions seem to only *partially* correspond to *some* of the notes coming out of the thing. I don't know enough about it to call this 'fake' but it looks pretty unusual.

This is too cool. I like how you can change the pitch by raising your hand. I'd love to see someone put this through a torture test and show what it can REALLY do! Nice invention!
its a keyboard, i dont think its programmed, it seems to have 8 notes and deppending on the distance from the keyboard to the hand it increases 12 semitones, or in other words an octave, so you can play a melody
place a mobile phone with a crappy midi sound on your desk and wave your hands above and you get the same. this isnt really a keyboard, because it is pre-programmed to play the propper notes. i would have been impressed if you could play everything without being programmed....
"Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages and ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key. This is also confirmed by LED feedback"
So, let's hear a Paganini caprice or perhaps a Scarlatti sonata on it.
Or is it what it seems to be--like playing a piano through treacle? Okay for slow or very repetitive music, but otherwise, not so much.

Woah~~~

Amazing technique, but still sounds like shit. My '92 toy keyboard has a better sound. So, can you use your own MIDIpacks on this one?
TorksonPds 1 year ago 7
@TorksonPds of course you can. The airpiano has no sound. Its a MIDI and OSC controller.

Sorry, didn't read the description. (I now feel like a regular YouTube commenter - stupid.)
Also failed to notice how this was uploaded over 2½ years ago... so, is it already being sold somewhere?
TorksonPds 1 year ago
@TorksonPds The airpiano will be sold very soon in very small production lines.

@omeryosha How much will it cost? Knowing pianos, it'll probably be around 300 dollars or something.

yeah!! theremin is weird =)
theremin is more like of a "freak", or annoying sound effect for weird situations,
when you hear it first time...but Air Piano is more comfortable for an average listener, I think
