once this next album is out of the way, and mike actually wants to come back of his own accord, dream theater will almost guaranteed welcome him back, provided he gives them more than a months notice before they are set to record

The other members of the bank were taking breaks. Mike Portnoy is the one with a severe case of ADD who decided he'd rather tour with Avenged Sevenfold rather than take the time off he supposedly needed.

He's an egomaniac and a control freak who was strangling the creative output of the other members of the band and trying to force them to take time off that only HE needed was another example of this.

Love this song - one of the best DT has made to date. The instrumental section with the volume pedal is beautiful. The contrary motion from 4:48 to 4:58 is particularly noteworthy. The implied chords in that part (from the bass notes) follow the ascending chord progression E-F#-G#min. At the same time, JP's guitar line DESCENDS from B to A# to G#, hitting the 5th of E, the major third of F#, and the tonic of G#min. Simply sublime. THIS is why I love DT - they write MUSIC.

In general response to some of the comments to this video: DT is a unique band for a number of reasons. I think, most importantly, as artists they have challenged the industry and the standards of the listeners and in that rite they have certainly become an undeniably transformative force. I think the industry is due for change because bands like DT exist and thrive. Folks should read Rich Wilson's book "Lifting Shadows" about DT. It's a fantastic read, and would be for nonDT fans too.
