I see so many flames at Clint. This was/is his bane. He wanted to be an actor and was always trying to break out of his onsreen image (I will never forgive him for allowing such a historical icon of manhood to crawl across a bar room floor!)
Anyway, he wanted (and tried, and tried, and tried) to be a drama, comedy, musical actor, but just can't seem to do it. He is an American Icon moreso than an actor.
And your flames just reflect that 50 year old sentiment.
Paint Your Wagon is painful to watch. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood were born to play tough guys. Watching them sing is horrible. The songs are sappy, and their voices aren't the singing type. This movie was a disaster of miscasting.
Clint Eastwood had never sung before this movie. They coached him to sing this. Needless to say, this was the only song Clint Eastwood ever sang in a movie.
This is one of the best musicals. I have loved this movie from childhood. The fact the that the singing is not what todays standerds are means nothing if you listen to the singers of this time you will find that not many of then would have made it past an audition on Americal Idle let alone won.
@Bootstataboots -- it is one of the movies that you would either love or hate. Basically it takes place in a town during the Gold Rush. A silly subplot is about a Mormon wife with two husbands.
Musicals have a very important reason for needing actors w/ trained singing voices.....They're musicals!!! All of the ruined, waste of time movie musicals on film because they thought they would make money w/ these stars of the moment. ALL of these musicals in the late 60's-early 70's bombed because people aren't stupid and can hear themselves sing in the shower,... for free! How timeless and enjoyable these musicals would've been w/ actual trained musical theater actor/singers.
I've never understood the amount of sh*t that gets thrown at Clint and Lee for this film, their singing in particular. I actually think both of them are actually very good in it, and more importantly their singing fits their characters in the film perfectly. It helps that the songs are brilliant too of course, but this film is one of the few musicals i can actually say i really love.
OK, you can take this to the bank-I knew Alan Jay Lerner, and my best friend was THERE at Mr. Lerner's house on Centre Island, NY when Clint was rehearsing this in Mr. Lerner's music room. This is ACTUALLY Clint Eastwood singing, he did ALL his own singing in this movie.
Wow...Clint Eastwood singing is one thing...but actually being good...wow...it's usually very hit or miss getting non-singing actors to do musicals. This is definitely one of the hits...
A gutsy decision, to do his own singing, but then Clint's better than you'd expect. (He holds that last note very nicely) Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire weren't singers either, but their movies would have been much poorer if their voices had been dubbed by "real" vocalists... good show.
I'd like to see this character finish that last note and run into Harry Callahan or The Man With No Name and turn beet red. At least Lee Marvin still sings tough but this...eesh.
He really had a great voice. So young. Wow! I remember him in it. Also I remember Harrison Ford in a cowboy flick, and he didn't even speak. And Jack Nicholson in a scary movie featuring Boris Karloff. Wow, that is really going back there. Nicholson had a Full head of hair.
I remember singing this song back in 1967 at a catholic boys school in Sparkill NY Saint Agnes School for boys. Those were the wonderful days of innocence and jubilation. And when the movie came out in 1971 those wonderful memories came with them. Great post!
The critics panned this movie when it came out. Too bad. They don't know squat when a good movie comes out! Even when it is aired on the Satellite stations, they only give it one star rating! Jerks!
he is so gorgeous!!!!!! he has a soft voice. I wish i could see him singing... i don't know...free, for ex taking a shower...(didn't he played in a movie where he sings under the shower?) or singing to a child:)
In the show, it is sung by a Mexican boy to a Norte Americana girl, which is why Lerner made the lyrics not rhyme, as if the boy didn't know English well enough. (Very clever.)
I love this movie! Who ever produced it knew a lot about the California gold rush. The costumes, how the saloons looked, and basic life of gold rush miners. Did you know the character Horace Tabor, the nerdy gold seeker from Wooster Massachussetts was based on a real person? He came from MA to the gold fields and later opened an opera house in Sacramento.
Yes, he also sang in Any Which Way You Can ("Beers To You"), Honkytonk Man ("When I Sing About You", "No Sweeter Cheater Than You") and Bronco Billy ("Barroom Buddies"). He also composes music and plays the piano in almost all his movies including the title songs for Gran Torino, Flags of Our Fathers and Mystic River. The list would be too long for this space.
My sweetheart, Clint...he can do almost anything but sing...a stunning pianist, yes...a singer, no. I happen to know he hated doing the singing parts in this movie. He's not bad, but he's not good...if that makes sense! Thanks for the share, Ramey...I DO love my Clint! xxoo Red
Your "not bad, not good" comment does make sense. However, I think that Eastwood fares better in this film with the song "Gold Fever," where he's able to tap into a brooding, bittersweet, bluesy vein.
Eastwood also fares better as a singer in "Honkytonk Man" (1982) which features some of his best work as both an actor and a director. Indeed, "Honktyonk Man" may be one of the most underrated films of the 1980s (the famous writer Norman Mailer loved it).
I believe you're correct...and "Honkytonk Man" was a great film; one I haven't seen in many years...think I'll rent it! What's funny about listening to Clint sing is he can carry a tune...and even sounds pretty good...there's just a few places where you can hear he's a tad off-key. I think, if he'd been interested, he could easily have overcome that little problem. I haven't seen "Paint Your Wagon" in ages, either. I'll have to see that one again, too! Thanks! Red
You're welcome. I'd say that Eastwood tends to strain and go a bit off-key when he moves into an upper register, but as you said, he probably could have rectified that sort of problem with more work.
By the way, Turner Classic Movies airs "Paint Your Wagon" from time to time (in wide-screen). And certainly, "Honkytonk Man" is a wonderful film, one that I wish more people were aware of.
Does anyone have the clip from the movie where they're singing, "There's A Coach Comin' In"? If so, can you please post? It's my favorite song in the movie and I can't find it on here! GRRR! Thanks.
I know the name of the movie. I want someone to post the song, "There's A Coach Comin' In", from the movie. That's when they hijack the prostitutes and bring them back to "No Name City".
I love this film..watched it 100000 times!!....take a listen to my Eurovision 2009 entry for Ireland its on my site...leave a comment if you like it or not!!!!
Who would have figured that a singing treehugger would evolve into Dirty Harry.I guess he spent too much time in the woods. They had some pretty good acid back in those days.Talk about one extreme to the other!!Eastwood's one of the best ever, but he's not supposed to sing. There's just something about it that's a little unnerving. He's supposed to kick ass,not prance through the woods singing show tunes.Regardless,he's still one of the best actors of all time!!
Well, Dirty Harry does wear his hair on the long side. In the original 1971 film, his superior patronizingly inquires, "When the hell are you going to get a hair cut?"
Also keep in mind that in the movie before "Dirty Harry," Eastwood starred in and directed "Play Misty for Me" (1971)where he plays a bohemian jazz disc jockey who reads poetry on the air.
It's a big disconcerting watching this because I can't separate the song from Clint's trademark "crazy ass look" in his eyes LOL. But the movie is classic.
I don't know when this movie was made but I saw this in the 90's on cable. Very very funny movie and nice musical too. Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and that lady whom they brought from the Mormon settlers. I don't know the title, I surely like to watch this movie again.
Just to be technical, the filmmaking took place in 1968, with the theatrical release occurring in October 1969. "Paint Your Wagon" then played in theaters for the rest of 1969 and for much of 1970.
Gonna paint your wagon! Gonna paint it swell! Gonna use oil based paint cause the wood is pine!

Clint never classed himself as a singer ,so taking on this part took some courage .Well done Mr Eastwood.

@ITT56RLC actually in the 60s he put together an album called "Cowboy Favorites"
So...You are actually totally wrong....he even owns a record label called Malpaso.

It's OK. Some of us are OK with our sexuality. Agreed, the song is pitchy dawg and not too good but it's a hell of a novelty item!!

Well, Dirty Harry does wear his hair on the long side. In the original 1971 film, his superior patronizingly inquires, "When the hell are you going to get a hair cut?"

Also keep in mind that in the movie before "Dirty Harry," Eastwood starred in and directed "Play Misty for Me" (1971)where he plays a bohemian jazz disc jockey who reads poetry on the air.

wow... Clint Eastwood has a pretty good singing voice
But this is downright unsettling.

haha, yeah. only watching this destroyed my vision of eastwood as an ultra-masculine man who doesnt blink before he shoots down a badguy.

The name of the movie is "Paint Your Wagon"--it was made in 1969.

Just to be technical, the filmmaking took place in 1968, with the theatrical release occurring in October 1969. "Paint Your Wagon" then played in theaters for the rest of 1969 and for much of 1970.

Excellent stuff.
I also like The Famous Eccles version that he sings in Napoleons Piano that goes like this.
I talk to the trees.
Thats why they put me away.
