That's the best thing about bass...what you're doing. It's fun to just groove with a drum track or loop. If you play with a drummer than you can really jam. I want a Godin A4 because an upright is too big. Nice tone from that michael kelly. Gotta love fretless bass.
That bass he's playing is a michael kelly fretless. I don't know the model but it's too soft to play with someone unless you plug it into an amp. Sounds good though.
nah ... I've never had lessons. I've just been jammin' at home for a long time. Thanks for the comment. I guess there's nothing wrong with lessons but I really don't know if they're "NECESSARY". I guess it depends on what you want. I just like plunkin' on my bass. :D

this is awesome! i always find myself going back to this vid, great song :)
btw, i was thinking of getting an acoustic so i would have something to play away from home (namely free time at school), would you have any suggestions? so far a michael kelly fretless sounds the most attractive but im broke :(
I'd also want to be able to jam with someone else playing acoustic guitar...
but anyways, seeing as how how many basses you own and how experienced you are, any suggestions?
For a decent sound & low price look into DEAN acoustics (I do believe they have a 4-string fretless model). Volume can be an issue when jamming with no amp for any acoustic bass, but I've heard some Martins that surprised me a little. But I think they'll cost more than the Michael Kelly. Still, for casual jamming (esp. if you've got 2 or more regular guitars involved), you may want a small combo amp - single 10" or 12" or a double 6" or 8".
fretless sounds awesome man, i love the slides - so smoooooth. im guna get me a fretless now, ive just found your vids man, they freakin rock, keep em coming!
Hi I have light gauge flatwounds for a regular electric bass on this acoustic ... they work fine! I took the roundwounds off immediately after buying the bass.
Thanks for the fast reply. I was wondering because I just ordered myself a MK dragonfly 5 strings fretless left-handed (the possibilities for all of these features in a bass surprise me), and I must say I did it partly because of your playing.
It's different from the jazz-fusion solo à la pastorius most people tend to do on fretless and you made me want to try it. Thanks!
My MK Dragonfly shipped with bronze roundwounds over that lovely inlay finger board, and although the card attached claimed they were coated strings, they most definitely were NOT. They should just include a small file with instructions to gouge a few grooves in the neck.
Yeah - got it in late September 2006. I also have an Epiphone El Capitan 5-str fretless; since it's a little bigger & heavier wood, it gets the Low-B string, & Dragonfly gets a High-C. Coated Low-B doesn't really fit Dragonfly's nut, anyhow.
Bronze are great for a fretted acoustic, esp non-amplified. They probably give the most ring and volume. I use them on my 4-string Applause.
Yeah, I guess that's why they use the bronze huh ... volume mostly ... I see. Putting roundwounds on uncoated soft rosewood doesn't make sense to me though ... oh well. :)
My 1st fretless was a cheap Rogue 4-string acoustic & it shipped w/ bronze rounds. I could see marks on fingerboard almost immediately & got me some flatwounds. The nylon-coated ones give a nice upright-ish sound. For more edge, a regular steel or monel (Rotosound JazzBass) flatwound is a'ight.
First off your bass playing is so epic. I love it. Do you mind have the notes or tablature for this piece. it's so cool.

i really like the stuff you do on that bass. It inspired me to un-fret (brutally :) ) my acoustic guitar. And even buy a bass. Peace!

Hi, can I ask you what kind of strings you use? They do seem to be flatwounded, which would tell me you don,t have the factory roundwounds anymore.
