even if the tree was not there it was out of pine straw, over a creek, and with the circumstances at hand, probably the best shot i've ever seen. shots like this is why i've been a phil fan since i got into golf!!!
Had he made the putt it would be clearly better than Tiger's chip, but given that he two putted to birdie I'd say the two shots are tied. I give a slight edge to Mickelson's just considering that he's always been an underdog in the eyes of the golf media.
I've noticed several pro's and retired pro's have commented that phil had more gap between the trees than what people thought. A case of bad tv angle maybe.
@itubeutude the gap isn't the impressive part to me. It's the tree in front of him blocking his view, and his draw from the pine straw to a front pin in front of a creek.
@itubeutude I don't care what angle or whether he was blocked by trees or not. The fact is he did have a tough shot out of a tough lie into a dangerously tight pin. Have you ever hit out of pine straw before? I'm sure if you have it didn't go that well.
@itubeutude It was a good shot, but the gap was actually quite large. Hitting the trees wouldn't have even played in his mind, the best part was actually boning it from the pine straw lie.
@thegoodnamesrallgone but tigers went in. Phil missed the putt. He could have just laid up and gotten the same score he ended up getting. Tigers was better
Balls of steel I would have chiped to a centred lay up.....i wouldnt have played that in a friendly let alone with a bunch of cash riding on it.shame he missed the put, technically it was for nothing.
Tiger Woods is a poor sport, and is a bad example for all young golfers. He has a bad additude. He is throwing the f bomb in front of the crowd and throwing his clubs, and slamming them. I have no repsect for a man of his nature
This is the reason I like Lefty's game more than Tiger's - you never know just what the hell he's going to do. Sometimes it's disastrous, sometimes fantastic. Either way, I'll always watch.
@nasher1921 Has nothing to dowith the trees, moron. Try hitting off pine needles (which DID bring the trees into play) and over the creek in front of hte green and have the ball come to rest exactly pin high.
Thanks, nasher...you have just proven you know absolutely nothing about golf.
I was in the grandstands a little down from 14 tee when he hit this shot....you could see him with an iron in his hand and I turned to my buddy and said "he's punching out"....all the sudden you see this big swing and hear this THWAAAACK....and I'm like "oh my God he didn't just try that did h.......YES HE DID!!!"
this isnt the greatest shot in masters history, gene sarazen double eagle, tiger's chip in and jack's putt in 86 are all better...HOWEVER this is the gutsiest shot of Masters. the fact that he made only birdie when he could have punched out and hit a wedge close and get the same score, puts this shot behind those 3.
@chang248 ...No, we CAN'T call that the shot of the century! Brilliant shot...YES! But, NOT of the century!! You (like so MANY others here) are either too young to have witnessed Tiger at his best...or, simply a Tiger HATER that refuses to acknowledge the man's GREATNESS!! Either way, your "Shot of the Century" comment FAILS (in an Augusta's "MAJOR" way)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@coltcub64 Out of a hundred attempts, any above average (amateur) player would be able to put Tiger's chip in the hole probably at least once, or when actually putting it prbbly make it 3/100. Phil's shot on this 13th was much more difficult than the Tiger chip, even Tiger might not come close to what Phil did if you'd give him a hundred tries from that position, discounting that he's not a lefty.
@MrHP77, In terms of guts, Phil's shot has the edge because he didn't have to do it. But once he got the yardage, it was pretty much a straight forward shot. He knew the line and how far he had to hit it. Phil had an opening. Hitting off of pinestraw was the only tough thing about that. Tiger could easily pull off a shot like Phil did. He has before, and has cashed in on it too. Phil missing the eagle putt kind of diminishes the shot. Phil also didn't need the shot to win unlike Tiger's chip.
@chang248 Tiger's chip in on the 16th hole on Sunday was every bit as good, if not better. Hell of a shot by Phil though, glad to see one of his crazy gambles pay off in a major for a change.
@itubeutude davis love holed the same chip years earlier. no one has hit that shot on 13 before. norman wanted to one year but his caddie basically forced him to lay up. mickelson has more courage than maybe anyone. palmer norman even tiger.
I remember watching this live bk in Scotland and saying " he isnt surely going to go for it?" When that ball landed on the green i couldnt believe what i had seen. Only Phil would have attempted that shot. Takes an incredible amount of bottle and trust in your ability to make a shot like that giving the circumstances. Must have been demoralising for Lee Westwood. Genius from Phil.
The moment and the situation for Mickelson to execute that shot is hard to pull off under pressure like that. Its up to one of the greatest shots of all time.
If anyone has ever been to Augusta, you will know that this shot is a freakin' country mile, off loose pine straw. 13 is a slight DL left, and he was off to the right in the trees, so he couldn't have possibly been any further away from the hole or in a worse spot.
TV does absolutely no justice to how difficult this shot actually was, and really he was idiotic to even attempt it. Simply one of the greatest, most gutsy golf shots of all time.
Absolutely, it was from pine straw rough, with a tree dead middle of the line. The guys puts it within 1 feet, tight lie and behind a water hazard. That is absolutely godlike.
@itubeutude : Yes, better than Tiger on 16 because this shot involved much more risk. At worst, Tiger's chip would end up 6' away at most. At worst, this shot could have cost Mickelson the tournament if not struck PERFECTLY.
@itubeutude tigers chip in on 16 was just dramatic, it didn't take this kind of skill, it was just a good read and a good chip at the right time. This shot was gutsy, and incredibly executed.
@cobrien1977 Really? What about the Bell open 200 something yards over water with a 6 iron. Or the 190 yard over trees. Countless shots prove Tiger is number one.
@joekoe97 Was a great shot..... one of the best. But there is an old saying in golf. Your last shot is only as good as your next. But considering the automatic birdie, I would say this shot was much better than the putt.
@phildrummer1 According to phil, he didn't think it was such a risky shot. The ball was sitting nicely in the pine needles. And the gap was bigger than it looked on tv.
Just one of the greatest shots ever.
