Had he made the putt it would be clearly better than Tiger's chip, but given that he two putted to birdie I'd say the two shots are tied. I give a slight edge to Mickelson's just considering that he's always been an underdog in the eyes of the golf media.

with the sunday pin tiger just needed a half decent pitch and it would feed down close to the hole

with phil's you could play it 1000 times and not get it that close again

I was in the grandstands a little down from 14 tee when he hit this shot....you could see him with an iron in his hand and I turned to my buddy and said "he's punching out"....all the sudden you see this big swing and hear this THWAAAACK....and I'm like "oh my God he didn't just try that did h.......YES HE DID!!!"

this isnt the greatest shot in masters history, gene sarazen double eagle, tiger's chip in and jack's putt in 86 are all better...HOWEVER this is the gutsiest shot of Masters. the fact that he made only birdie when he could have punched out and hit a wedge close and get the same score, puts this shot behind those 3.

Gene Sarazen's double eagle on 15 was probably better, but no film exists for it to be witnessed. It happened back around 1935.

@coltcub64 Out of a hundred attempts, any above average (amateur) player would be able to put Tiger's chip in the hole probably at least once, or when actually putting it prbbly make it 3/100. Phil's shot on this 13th was much more difficult than the Tiger chip, even Tiger might not come close to what Phil did if you'd give him a hundred tries from that position, discounting that he's not a lefty.

@MrHP77, In terms of guts, Phil's shot has the edge because he didn't have to do it. But once he got the yardage, it was pretty much a straight forward shot. He knew the line and how far he had to hit it. Phil had an opening. Hitting off of pinestraw was the only tough thing about that. Tiger could easily pull off a shot like Phil did. He has before, and has cashed in on it too. Phil missing the eagle putt kind of diminishes the shot. Phil also didn't need the shot to win unlike Tiger's chip.

I remember watching this live bk in Scotland and saying " he isnt surely going to go for it?" When that ball landed on the green i couldnt believe what i had seen. Only Phil would have attempted that shot. Takes an incredible amount of bottle and trust in your ability to make a shot like that giving the circumstances. Must have been demoralising for Lee Westwood. Genius from Phil.

If anyone has ever been to Augusta, you will know that this shot is a freakin' country mile, off loose pine straw. 13 is a slight DL left, and he was off to the right in the trees, so he couldn't have possibly been any further away from the hole or in a worse spot.

TV does absolutely no justice to how difficult this shot actually was, and really he was idiotic to even attempt it. Simply one of the greatest, most gutsy golf shots of all time.
