as a kid i loved the romantic exuberance and splendor of the philadelphia orchestra's sound under ormandy's direction - and i loved. loved, loved his tempos in every piece he conducted or recorded - i later heard many of the musicians hated him, but i guess that wasn't so unusual for a conductor to be hated back in those days
Thank you so much for this. I'm learning more about the Philadelphia Sound - my mother and I saw Eugene Ormandy at Robin Hood Dell in the early 70's I believe, with Ertha Kitt as the guest artist - I will never forget this. It is also so fabulous that we hear Blythe Danner as narrator in parts of this film. She is a part of Philadelphia, and don't we love it.
The Marvelous sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra from Stowkowski, Ormandy to Ricardo Muti. Roger M. Scott, the orchestra's principal bass for some 47 years, describes Ormandy's and Stowkowski's techniques in producing the sounds we've come to so enjoy throughout the early to mid 20th century history of this incredible ensemble. Ricardo Muti also describes the emergence of the Philadelphia sound to one of his own. This video is a must !!!
Thank you so much for uploading this! My father is a quite a big fan of this orchestra (His favorite's the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as is mine), because of the wonderful string section. A good friend of his, Charles Vernon, used to be the Principal bass trombonist in this orchestra.
@Maazel456 . I grew up in Chicago with the sound of the CSO in my ears. I moved to Philly to absorb that Philly Orchstra sound. Both are great, but so veri different from each other.
I`m curious, What kind of influence did The orchestra have on PIR and Salsoul? On Gamble and Huff?
