@hlwanmoe1981 A. lumbricoides is a large roundworm resembling an earthworm. It's transmitted to humans by ingestion of soil contaminated with human feces that harbor A. lumbricoides ova. Such ingestion may occur directly (by eating contaminated soil) or indirectly (by eating poorly washed raw vegetables grown in contaminated soil).
@hlwanmoe1981 Ascariasis never passes directly from person to person. After ingestion, A. lumbricoides ova hatch and release larvae, which penetrate the intestinal wall and reach the lungs through the bloodstream. After about 10 days in pulmonary capillaries and alveoli, the larvae migrate to the bronchioles, bronchi, trachea, and epiglottis. There they are swallowed and return to the intestine to mature into worms.
@hlwanmoe1981@hlwanmoe1981 Ascariasis is most common in tropical areas with poor sanitation and in Asia, where farmers use human feces as fertilizer. In the United States, it's more prevalent in the south, particularly among people ages 4 to 12.
@Mindraker1 Most symptoms are very common: Fever Wheezing Coughing Abdominal symptoms Abdominal discomfort Malabsorption Partial intestinal blockage Total intestinal blockage Severe abdominal pain Vomiting Restlessness Disturbed sleep Worm in stool Worm in vomit Ascariasis is often discovered only when people vomit or expel worms, or because of intestinal blockage, in most cases it's asymptomatic, or the symptoms are common to many other diseases.
@1993ufuk The video description says this "... a 5-year old child with a ball of Ascaris inside his Gastrointestinal tract!" So this Ascaris ball was surgically removed from the boy's GI tract, which is a very common surgical complication, mostly in children (who have smaller GI tracts than adults), because the worms are big (can measure up to 35cm) and can block feces, which can lead to intestinal perforation and death if not removed.

@javieralza No, it's no one worm, but a bolus (ball) of worms. Ascaris can measure up to 35cm, and children can often have a larger number than adults (because children often play in the sand and dirt, put things in their mouths etc), sometimes hundreds or thousands of these worms. Because these worms are big, they can block the gastrointestinal tract, which if left untreated would lead to intestinal perforation and death. In such cases, the only cure is surgery.

@comoyloly Ascaris lumbricoides es un nemátodo parásito del intestino delgado del hombre, muy frecuente en países poco desarrollados. doubt it. i mean. if there was a medicine like that. they would give it to ppl for treatment and there wouldnt be use for it to be surgically removed. i think :/
@gizmo20065 video description says this "a 5-year old child with a ball of Ascaris inside his Gastrointestinal tract!" So this Ascaris ball was surgically removed from the boy's GI tract, which is a very common surgical complication, mostly in children (who have smaller GI tracts than adults), because the worms are big, can measure up to 35cm, tangle up in the GI tract, and block feces, which can lead to intestinal perforation and death if not removed.
@gizmo20065 But most people who have ascaris (prevalence worlwide, 1 billion people) usually have few worms. There is a minority of people who end up with bigger parasitic load, and can have hundreds or thousands of these worms inside there bodies. Usually they are children, because children tend to put things in their mouths, play in the sand, soil etc and don't tend to wash their hands. It's most dangerous when you have huge numbers of ascaris, because they start to wander around the body.
@gizmo20065 because of overpopulation, worms start migrating through the body. if they end up in certain organs like gall bladder, pancreas or appendix, it can be potentially fatal
this is not in africa.. the woman is speaking in Filipino! Due to rampant corruption in the Philippines, health care is almost nil. the government's funds were used primarily to pay foreign debts, to strengthen the military and a huge amount found its way into politicians' pockets!
@ninefootnails No, tapeworms are flat segmented worms who attach their heads to your small intestine, then they steal nutrients from the food you digest, while these are round worms that can measure up to 35cm, and which move around in your body. They are known to wander out of the intestine and can go literally everywhere, even in your trachea or nose.
it is a tapeworm, assuming the fact that the boy is only 5 years, he must of had it from around birth, they don't usually get that long, most of the tapeworms can be gotten rid of thru the use of some simple pills that make the worm pass through
@mikedeiremonne No, it's no a tapeworm. Tapeworms are cestodes (flatworms), while this is actually of ball of several ascaris (at least several dozens I think), which are nematodes (round worms), that measure up to 35 cm.
@msns57 Ascaris lumbricoides is the giant roundworm of humans, belonging to the phylum Nematoda. An ascarid nematode, it is responsible for the disease ascariasis in humans, and it is the largest and most common parasitic worm in humans. A quarter of the human population is estimated to be infected by this parasite. Ascariasis is prevalent worldwide and more so in tropical and subtropical countries.

is that like......a tapeworm
ninefootnails 1 year ago
@ninefootnails No, tapeworms are flat segmented worms who attach their heads to your small intestine, then they steal nutrients from the food you digest, while these are round worms that can measure up to 35cm, and which move around in your body. They are known to wander out of the intestine and can go literally everywhere, even in your trachea or nose.

this is like a disease right?
msns57 1 year ago
it is a tapeworm, assuming the fact that the boy is only 5 years, he must of had it from around birth, they don't usually get that long, most of the tapeworms can be gotten rid of thru the use of some simple pills that make the worm pass through

it's not a tapeworm.... thats a bunch of worms. My mother told us about her passing worms like that as a child. YUCK OMG

It can reach a length of up to 35 cm.
