Dear Friends: Multiple plaintiffs have filed a federal civil rights complaint to block resumption of MIC production at the Bayer Cropscience plant in Institute, WV. The M.I.C. Legal Fund, needs money for litigation costs! Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated. We set up a PayPal account for this endeavor. Any amount is appreciated!!
If you can't imagine this happening in the US think again, it almost did. A fatal explosion occurred on Aug. 28, 2008 in Institute, WV. at the Bayer CropScience Chemical plant. This deadly explosion could have easily eclipsed Bhopal India. Bayer CropScience is the only chemical plant in the World that makes and stores enough MIC daily that can cause this kind of mass holocaust.
I doubt if the yanks would have built such a badly run plant near a major population center in the US........the fact that they built it near one in India proves that they could'nt have given a shit.........goes to show that today a yanks life is worth more then some poor persons life in the third world when it comes to the big bucks........
It had a lot to do with laziness at the plant. If you watch seismic seconds, you will see that the guys took short cuts to get stuff done more easily and more quickly. Not to say that money didn't play a role, but it i always the scape goat, even though it is rarely the root cause.
There is enough proof that there were several severe incedents in this plant the years before. Nobody gave a dam fush. This accident was accepted as collateral damage.
The simple question is: To what locations go the products and the profits from this plant?
The Answer to this question points directly to where the victims should have been fallen .... but - WOULD they have been fallen?
And - do you boycott products from alike companies?
This is just another way to invade other countries!
The pesticide was meant for the indian market. A country having a billion people to feed need pesticide for their agricultural sector. Also, The indian government was 49.1% shareholder. They take responsibility?
I don't share your opinion that India needs pesticides. As brilliantly pointed out by Vandana Shiva (search YouTube) they need a self-sufficient healthy agriculture that isn't taken over by the western industrial food complex.
UCC as the majority shareholder IS responsible for they made they crucial decisions which led to the disaster. They chose the inapt location, made the decisions about investments in savety, maintenance of machines and training of the workers.
Part 2 I agree with you that the persons in the Indian Government who were complicit in the fatal decisions by granting unregulated license should be hold accountable too. In the end they could know the long history of fatal negligences of UCC which dates back to 1927 to the Hawk's Nest Disaster.
1 Interesting stuff what this woman tells but it's always the same story. managers overrule their technicians for what? Greed. The indian government is double responsible since they were both shareholder and responsible for inspections. We all know about the corruption in India. I know what I'm talking about since I was 10+ times in Mumbai, 3 times in Bhopal, once in Goa and also for business. India is the dirtiest place that I've seen in my entire life and I only travel abroad like 10 times p/y
2 So I really don't understand what indians can be proud of. Nevertheless, here in The Netherlands something similar is going on. Managers overrule technicians like me, I'm an offshore natural gas platform operations technician. The government earns most out of it so automatically corruption is involved concerning state mining inspection. Best should be to lift inspection to a european level.
Imagine if it had happened in a city in the US... Union Carbide would have had to pay hundreds of billions of dollars and never would they have had the nerve to say it wasn't their fault.
See, this is my problem, I just can"t Imagine that this would have happened in the US
It's within the US-American system that this kind of criminal and neglectful indifference and greed is defined for abroad, to be exact, for the so called third world or at least for the poorest districts of the not often so called second world. In one word - for the most vulnerable and defenseless on this planet.
in 1998 when i visited bhopal i was shocked to see a biggest rally of sufferers protesting against govt. it was amazing to see their hope that they are still looking for justice,
Indian government was surely dumbass to accept the out of court settlement of 2000$ to 500,000 people totaling to 1 billion dollars in exchange to people's lives.
The matter should have been pursued in the court for justice. What a sell off !
India getting again in the claws of America by fixing the price of compensation if anything goes wrong with the nuclear plant US is going to build in 2 places in India........
They put a plant with potentially poisonous materials in the center of town. What the fuck did Union Carbide think would happen? It was just a matter of time before something like that happened. Disasters like this have very similar characteristics. Just like they built Chernobyl and then founded the city of Pripyat right next to it. Muppets. The least they could have done was clean up but they didn't even do that. Neither did they take responsibility.
reading that makes me want to hit you with a golf club until i can tee off with your eyeballs, kidney stones, and even your testicles and/or ovaries...
Watching this makes me know that I can't expect anything good to come out of the fiasco at the Institute, WV USA chemical plant--Bhopal's Sister plant.
I briefly remember about Bhopal disaster because I was very young in boarding school. That was the only major news stayed in my mind for so long, but never seen any clip or photos of it. Once again, I thank Aljazeera for presenting us this documentary. I hope, the rest of the powerful nation such as US, China, Canada, and India as well learn from this environment disaster.
Kudos Al Jaz! I am from India, its sad an Indian's life is worth $2000. What if something similar would have happened in New York? How much is a New Yorker's life worth?
A Muslim and Dalit Indian FAMILY's life is worth $2000. And they're still being poisoned to death and disability 20+ years after the big toxic leak.
Kudos to "India Rising" and all the PR campaigns for hiding the true face of the injustice and racism permeating through India and perpetuated by government policies.
mimeNo9 u r a fool to reduce this tragedy to a caste/religion based argument, you must realise that nobody's life is worth a mere 2000 dollars. And please remove the bloated presumption that only nobody cares about the poor in india other than the poor themselves and that the poor are always muslims or dalits.
and agreed that the 'india rising' campaign was a lame undertaking but wot have the past and present 'secular' governments done to resolve the problem. Face it if you want to end racism/religion based injustice then we need a Uniform Civil Code in India; something that the present government has rubbished!!!
I was born in 1986, but I knew about this disaster from books. Never saw a decumantry until now, thank you Al-Jazeera for covering this tragedic story.
