  • acid house playin on the background

  • This is the historical fact:

"Techno is a form of electronic dance music (EDM)[1] that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, USA during the mid to late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988.[2][3] Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built.[4]"

Anyone who denies this fact and claims Techno Music came from Europe is either ignorant or trying to change history.

  • i agree , but the techno evolved more in europe and is played MUCH more ... though i would like to see more of it in america !

  • Or they're confusing techno and trance.

  • Derrick May is correct. He's a world recognized originator of Techno. He's been there since the beginning. He knows the truth.

Urban American Blacks (and some Latinos) invent some music or dance. But as racial minorities they're not totally accepted. So their music/dance gets exploited by Whites who put their money into it and take it over. Then it becomes commercialized and sold around the world. And then everyone forgets its roots.

Techno, Rock n Roll, Jazz Dance, whatever, same pattern.

  • For the true history of the music, two

must have DVDs- Maestro-A film by

Josell Ramos and Pump Up The Volume-

    A Dance Music Documentary.

    Very precise, very accurate, very

    informative.

  • 00:55 How called this Track ?

  • justin-I totally DISAGREE because if you study the true progression of electronica keyboards like MOOG invented by Americans to the progression of electronic keyboards utilized in improvisional music were all perfected by Americans on the commercial and pop sense prior to funk was jazz...which was hot worldwide, fusion jazz band loved using analog synth prior to the Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk. Seriously...its really quite lame how European can claim its there music when it was simply technology

  • I'd like a spanish subs version, don't you know any video guys? ^_^

    CXS ^-*

  • Electronic was European, then black, then young, then international. it is much more complex than black music/white music. Please..no more idiots posting please.

  • ~hey boys~

  • CHECK AND THIS! watch?v=xQB8fC-NylE :)

  • Man, that video is so FUCKING FALSE it isn't funny. Some German techno it's name? LOL! "Techno" was based off a fucking book, man.

Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson saw themselves as the same "techno rebels" that Toffler described, hence the name.

SO PLEASE, stop this fictional shit.

  • You're taking this shit way too personal. Take a chill the fuck out pill. Techno. short for technology music is how this came about. The term techno. isn't new. We all know this. Kraftwerk used it in their 'Electric Cafe' album. but no other artist had used the term Techno Music but the Detroit pioneers. It's all relative and Technology music, as it is all electronic music but with different styles and labels. House, Disco, Electronica etc.

  • Why does no one, and I mean no one, give

credit to Farley Funk'in Keith and the Hot Mix

five for pushing house music to the level it

went to at a time when it was labeled a gay

dance music style. Jesse Saunders, Steve Silk

Hurley, Marshall Jefferson, all pushing House

music out of the club and stretching it

    world wide.

  • because the real heroes are the ones we never talk about

  • Farley Funkin Keith is Farley Jackmaster Funk I think...

  • track at the start?

  • daymares (it is what it is) - derrick may

  • great documentary mate. what's its name?

  • drugs suck

  • i don't think so

  • get your facts straight pleasse. techno music became defined as a genre in detroit. What you're mentioning is electronica or electronic-pop, which did influence techno, but its a separate genre in itself.

  • thats the whistle song. I have it. Damn, let me think david morals.

  • But what is the track at the beginning?

  • I think it's called "It Is What It Is" by Rhythim is Rhythim

  • Thank you. But it´s hard to find...

  • i thought techno was biggest in europe not america

  • That's the whole point. It started on the

streets of Chicago, but yet Chicago doesen't

give it mad respect like the U.K. does.

  • Actually Techno began in Detroit, not Chicago. You're thinking of House.

  • Fair enough, much props to model 500.

    'They say no U.F.O.s!'

  • Cool, I give props with you to Model 500!

  • O.K., you remember a cut called Ride The

Rhythm by 'This Ain't Chicago',Phat As Hell!!!

  • In the strict definition of the term-yes, definately! Let's not forget that Levan @ the paradise garage, and frankie Knuckles @ the wareHOUSE were DJing what later fell under the umbrella of "techno" as a broad term for Modern DJ dance music, earlier than the Detroit set. They all played a part...

  • Im glad YOU pointed that out mate. Saved me from doing so.

  • and as well should you love yourself. nah mean? why you so scared yo? that is teh truth. do your own research man. dig yo. say something. stop commenting blindly. love and grow kid. bet!

  • FUCK CORPORATE AMERICA!

  • is it from NHK (tv tation of japan) TV program?

  • Derrick May really loves himself.

  • as well he should

  • Kraftwerk, Afrika Bambaata, Soul Sonic Force...

  • Be careful you might actually school these young kids.

What about the Cold Crush Brothers, The Three Fresh M.C.s, Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde......

  • If you study the history of Trax Records, DJ International, Steve Silk Hurley, Mr. Fingers, Farley Funkin Keith, and Chip E. These were guys that got royaly fucked by a predominantly white corporate run music industry at the time.

  • oh really how come? what happened how they got fucked over? thatts a shame doode

  • By giving each artist $1000.00 up front for all the rights to their music, then making millions by selling

their records in every country across the globe.

  • oh deng, sounds like these guys shoulda read the fine print, these artists should of kept all their rights too bad. still i agree these damn record labels take too much of their fair share.

  • True, greed has a way of blinding a person from reality. But when you don't have a buisness degree and

are deep rooted in House Music, all you want is for

    people to hear your music.

  • i hope the new generation of musicians will learn from that mistake

  • It doesen't seem that they will, it's extremely frustrating after all that in musical history that the emphasis is on new rims for a car rather than getting a college education or a buisness started.

  • Word. Dance music might be fun, but the background of the creators was serious experience of racism and low income situation. Originally it was pawnshop's used garbage instruments. But NOW how much does old TB303 and TR909 cost these days? And what kind of people can only afford it now? I guess America Minorities will keep creating an innovative music dance culture, but only to have it taken over and exploted by the you know who.

  • Yup!!! Its happening with rap music right now.

  • rap how it was is done.

  • amen...

  • European dance clubs would of never happened if it wasn't for afro-american music.

the first dj set was in the u.k. but they played 20's big band which is american black music, and then northern soul in the U.K. still played forgotten american black music from detroit and chicago

  • Interesting, but still not sold. What about European Swing clubs, which predate WWI, specifially germany and flappers. I do not yet believe all of Europes "modern music creativity" comes from american origins. Don't assume, give me credited references.

  • chrismreece you need to seriously stop talking.

  • Thats a cool doco.

    How freaking old is though???

  • Boooring!!

  • electro is Hip Hop!!

  • omg u can say fuck on japanese TV?

  • RESPECT.

  • great documentary... i learned something... i didn't think it was about racial oppression... i thought it was about musical expression...

  • Does it occur to some of these "opressed" types that not every white person has it in for them? Or that not all white people are rich suburbanites who aren't happy unless they're exploiting minorities?

Can't we all just enjoy the freaking music!?!

  • No - it doesn't

  • I'm glad there's something like electronic dance music, what would I do without it...?!

Electronica, Techno, House all the way BABY!!

Dancing to these tunes touches my soul, at most house does. Keep on rocking peeps!

  • Techno own you all noobs!!!

  • Have you considered that a lot of people just dont like Techno music. not to mention that its very closely related to Extacy users, and who wants to label themselves a druggie? If your going to make the Argument that Racism is keeping techno down, I think youve got your own bias's to work through before you see the big picture of society and how it operates.

  • Stereotypes and myths. Exctasy users listen to Trance. Trance is another style of Techno that more geared towards white kids. Techno in Detroit has several styles of techno. The original Techno is more closer to what Afrika Babatta and the Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock.' Just listen to Cybotron's 'Clear. Or Aux 88..The druggoes don't get high off of that because it doesn't have that transit feel. Transit feel is more like the pyschedelic music of the 60's.

  • Wow! I was just thinking this yesterday. I looked up Chicago DJs on the Tube and what do you think I got, Bad Boy Bill, Bad Boy Biil, Bad Boy Bill. I give Bill his props, he was fat back in the day but to me he's just going with the commercial flow. In my opinion Farley Funkin Keith (love him or hate him) should be gettin maaaad props for globalizing Chicago House music.

  • "Trance is another style of Techno"

Please, for the love of all that's holy, don't say Trance is a subgenre of Techo. Trance is soulless marching music. Trance is another form of electronic music, but it has NOTHING to do with techno as far as any purist is willing to admit.

AT BEST it's a remote counterfeiting of techno, and a lifeless one at that, but it ain't techno.

  • You need to get a fucking grip on your emotions. It isn't that serious. And yes, Trance is. But with it's roots from House and Disco.

  • Social history of USA is about Race. Inner city of NY, Chicago, Detroit where underground culture like boogaloo, funk, disco, b-boys, freestylers, housers, techno ALL came from these environmenta. Not the suburban whites. Black and Latino, Race Underclass situation always involved. Black and Latino youth living in Ghetto. Their culture is easy target for commerical exploitation. Companies market new musical trends to White suburban youth who have more extra money to spend on products.

  • This is true.

  • of course people with more money and privelige can enjoy more.. thanks to global capitalization of american racial minority music. derrick may is correct. but at least blacks are remembered. ghetto latino's contributions to electronic dance music are overlooked.

  • yeah! like mantronix!

  • Wrong. Both are used for economic purposes. the Latino community just haven't capitalized on it. Blacks are remembered not because of the States but because the British paid respect and homage to them. If Derick May and the others hadn't traveled overseas, you wouldn't hear about them. It is their Post electronic influence overseas that have made groups in the UK well known over here. Very similar to Josphine Baker and Jimmy Hendrix.

  • ...

  • ...

  • Im glad that Derrick May mentions the fact of racism that caused rejection of Black dance music in America the first place. This is why today techno is considered White Euro electonic music when in fact it is originally Black ghetto music same as Hip hop. Its unfortunate that there is some kind of racial divide even in dance music. Now is mostly rich white kids that can only afford a 808 and 909. Its ironic and sad.

  • Why always that racial thing. It doesn't matter who invented it. Black and white and yellow and brown are enjoying this music very much. And I'm sorry but rich white kids can only afford a 808 or 909? I don't think so. Don't be sad just enjoy!!!!

  • Precision: only RICH people can afford 808s and 909s (I used to own every major XOX box). Colour has nothing to do with it. Now, back in the mid 90s, ANYONE could afford XOX boxes because there was a shift to digital and the majority of the music community shunned all the analogue boxes.

  • I thought Kraftwerk helped invent techno - who are white euro people. But I agree that it shouldn't be a racial thing.

  • No, Kraftwerk didn't help invent Techno. Kraftwerk was a 'influence' on the Techno scene is Detroit, L.A. and NYC electronic.

Kraftwerk's music was used often as dance music during the late 70's and early 80's in African Amnerican community. This is how and where the influence came from.

    Kraftwerk is more Electronica.

  • "Kraftwerk is more Electronica."

Synth Pop to be exact. Know your genres, man.

  • that tune was ("it is what it is")1988.

  • Wow your version of derrick May's interview is different from mines it seems a few seconds were deleted from my version.

  • "it is what it is"

  • It Is What It Is Rhythm Is Rhythm

  • it's Derrick May for sure, but I don't know the name of the tune :)) It HAS to be from on of these two albums though: "Beyond The Dance" (1989) or "The Beginning" (1990)

  • The first tune that comes on. need the name of the track

  • The first one? I want to know, too.

  • whats the name of this tune ? been looking for this sound for years!!
