  • Yes, engineers, doctors, lawyers high salary vocations, I find it strange that you would make a comment like that, thus solidifying my point of view.

When Saint Ignatius of Loyola, cast away his Knighthood armor and founded what came to be the largest male religious order of the Catholic Church, the Society of Jesus, do you think he had ideas of having his followers become lawyers, doctors and engineers? When he and his 6 other buddies took a vow of poverty, did they say, lets get a law degree

  • When St. Ignatius founded the Jesuits, he DID see them become lawyers, doctors and engineers. That's why his was the first religious order to DEMAND higher education for its members. It's strange that "you've spend your entire life around Jesuits" and you have not picked up this most basic of facts about the Society of Jesus.

  • Fr. Robert, I mean no ill will. Apparently I did not get my point across. Perhaps, you may be a little clouded and frustrated with me. No hate here. I apologize for my initial comment, truly I do. Please do not mind me. I rather enjoy your videos. Also, I like that people come to your defense. You are a very rich man in that respect. Respectfully, Don Quixote, de la Mancha

  • Don Quixote,

I don't believe that you have any ill will, but please understand that I hear these kinds of comments every day... many times from my own brother Jesuits. --- There is a misconception that because a priest is educated or interested in a field OTHER than Theology or piety, that they have somehow diminished their apostolic calling or their priestly effectiveness.

I very much care to disagree.

    -- Continued --

  • -Continued-

I have had more great spiritual conversations started by chats about technology than many priests have had through piety and holiness alone. I'm not discounting that type of priesthood, but I am saying that it is NOT the priesthood and ministry that I am called to.

I am irreverant. I swear. I poke and prod at authority and I have no problem questioning my own faith and place in life --- but that is one of the wonderful things about the Jesuits, we find God in ALL things.

  • Touche, Father Robert. Well put. There is no defense against a good Jesuit education. I'm subscribing to gadgettts. I think your reviews are great. Sorry for being such an ass.

    I knew I'd like you.

BTW- Alter Boy of The Year 1981

  • Hey Don, if you hate priests so much why do you keep coming back here to sprout your hate? We like Fr. Robert. Hes different and not stuffy. What have you ever done with your life to compare with what he does with his on a daily?

In short, stop being a douche.

  • Again, it's not about hate. I never said I hate priest. You are a prime example of what is wrong with so many people. You do not know how to listen (in this case decipher what you read). I'm sorry you have a comprehension problem. BTW- whats with the name calling, is your vocabulary limited? Perhaps Fr. Bob can provide you some education that is out of reach for most people on this planet.

  • nublerjr,

I really do appreciate that you have always come to by defense, especially since you are a self-avowed atheist, and I enjoy all the letters of support that you have sent over the past few months... but PLEASE don't turn the comments into a flame war.

Let people write what they want and I'll respond when I can. Don't get worked up over it and just be the cool person that I know you to be. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • Don't you ever get sick of the haters Fr. RoberT? What is it about YouTube that brings out all the anonymous cowards?

  • It's not about hating...I have no hate and never said I hate him. I'm sure if I met him I would really like him. He seems like a fund guy to hang out with. It's about the truth.

  • Again with the name calling...say something intelligent.

  • geeksmack!

I haven't hear from you in a while. Where did you run off to?

In any case, I don't think that Don was hating. He obviously has some strong feelings about the Jesuits... that's cool... he's free to write about them.

Good to hear from you and I hope you've enjoyed the changes in the show. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • You know you're catholic when your son complains of "the hand of god" going down his pants...

  • ummmm... ok... kinda random... kinda funny... lotsa sad.

  • Technology has it's DARK side as we entrust more and more of our everday lives into it's grip. It has the potential to be the greatest slavemaster humanity has ever seen. Likewise - the church has ITS DARKSIDE. In some way - whether you like it or not: you have positioned yourself here as a representative of both. I'm trying to provoke a reaction here ON PURPOSE.

  • Good... I admire that... really.. We need more "pot stirrers" in the world. :)

Although I must disagree with you in one aspect. Technology in and of itself does not have a dark side, but it CAN be used for dark purposes. Both JPII and Benedict are on the record saying as much. Degree 11 of GC34 of the Society of Jesus says the same. -- That's really where my 'gadget' ministry comes from. -- Placing technology at the disposal of people, instead of the other way around. Peace, F.R.

  • Do whatEVER you want / I'll say whatEVER I want. Everything is open to questioning. This is boobtube. I do not believe that my master's degree affords me any special rights. However, it is just as significant a fact as your being a priest. I mention it only to clarify where I'm coming from in terms of my comments. I'm not "confusing" anything. Everything is relational. the fact you've chosen to be a jesuit catholic priest geek-scholar raises many questions in my mind ~

  • Yes... Free world, open Internet, free will.

Please believe me when I say that I really do understand where you are coming from... and perhaps my responses have been a bit harsh, sorry about that... I'm getting cranky in my old age.

If you really want to chat about this, take it to email or contact me though TheTechStop -- it's much more productive than YT commenting. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • A youtube video speaks a THOUSAND words . . . .

  • BTW - I have a master's degree in Theology from a prominent catholic university. I'm well aware of the many fields besides formal ministry in which priests engage the world. I have also encountered firsthand the hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty of the church and many of its priests. The church is overly authoritarian, sexist, homophobic, archaic and corrupt. Jesuits pride themselves on their free - wheeling/thinking, elitist version of roman catholic priesthood. Glad it "works" for you!

  • "...the color treat is INFUSED", as he caressed the top of the notebook gushing about ethernet ports and the such! your presentation sounds like a sexual transference - a cathection, and a strange one at that. Sorry Padre, how is this laptop and the time spent drooling over it gonna bring anyone closer to God? The closest I've come to having a "religious" experience around a computer was the day I made the decision to switch to a mac.

  • Hey all you anti-Jesuit and anti-gadget guys.

    Mwuuuuaaahaaaa! You got served!

  • Is geeKey-ness next to godlyNess -?- LOLOLO

  • My podcast is EXACTLY for people like yourself who believe that God and gadgetry have to be mutually exclusive. I don't believe that they do. I believe that a show like mine can show a person who is completely dedicated to his vocation (14 years and running) and yet IS a geek.

I am all about the Jesuit motto: "Finding God in all things." --

If you want to find out about exactly what I'm doing with this show, you could always visit TheTechStop. Peace, Fr. Robert

  • gadgetISM is a modern day form of idolatry Padre.

  • This isn't to say that I care more about gadgets than my vocation -- if you knew me, then you would know about the 2 years I spent as a missionary in Bolivia, or the year in the Philipines. What about the two years teaching on the south side of Chicago? Or the year teaching inner-city young adults in Milwaukee? How about the time I spent serving in a soup kitchen in Guaymass, Mexico? -- Or the fact that I am a currently a FULL time priest at Holy Spirit Parish (The University Catholic Center)?

  • I find it very strange and incongruous to be receiving tech advice from a priest via youtube. I think this guy got his vocation wrong - no collar, and seems way more psyched about gadgets than God!

  • If you find it strange... then you don't know the Jesuits. We have priests who are artists, engineers, lawyers, doctors, writers, and pretty much every type of professional discipline you can imagine.

    (continued on your next post)

  • Did he envision his followers driving a shiny new Honda Accord or Camry. Eating at lavish dining establishments ordering the best wine. Come on, who are you trying to kid. I would find it interesting if you never bare witness to this. Why are you not out there saving souls or schmoozing your rich parishioners and alumni for more money. Quick question, in high school this one Jesuit wore a wig, don't you think there is something wrong with that?

  • I don't know about a shiny new Accord, I drive a junky Jetta... but I don't think that should be the distinguishing mark of our lives. Being a Jesuits is all about being able to do the work. --- We use whatever we can find to do that work.

  • Here's an example for you.. In my 14 years as a Jesuit, I have fed the poor in Guaymass, Mexico. Worked with the homeless in Sucre, Bolivia. Lived with the mentally impared in Seattle, Washington. Taught inner-city children in Chicago, Milwaukee and Los Angeles. --- I have also seen some great sights around the world, rubbed shoulders with some of the richest men and women in the world and received an education that is out of reach for most people on this planet.

    THAT is the Jesuit legacy.

  • Your problem is that you seem to believe that the Jesuits should be like the Franciscans, or the Dominicans, or perhaps Opus Dei. -- We are not.

You don't like the Jesuits, that much is clear, but please don't confuse your own personal grudge against the Society of Jesus with the truth of who we are.

  • There they go again the society of Jesus boys are all about making money...If you want to be a priest be a Jesuit

  • That's an interesting comment. What about my videos makes you think that I'm about making money? I don't remember selling anything and I'm pretty sure that we don't get paid for the hours of work that goes into making the show.

  • how many other priest do you see on YT hocking (pawning) material costly goods. That's interesting that you don't realize that. Believe you me, I have been around Jesuits nearly my entire life and they all seem to carry the same trait. Come on, be honest with yourself, you know what I am talking about, J****, you live with them.

  • Yes... I live with them. I am one. I am proud to be a Jesuit and to carry on the Jesuit tradition.

  • I find it interesting that you seem content to make a judgement about an individual just from what you see online. You may have been around Jesuits nearly all your life, but the fact that you see us as two-dimensional entities is rather sad.

  • this episode of Gadget was brought to you BYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.... LMAO

  • Check out how he push the disc button but the disc never goes out!!

  • Kwankan, Good catch. The disk had actually started to autorun, so I had to wait for it to spin down completely before it popped out.

  • ok hahaha ...I thought it was broken

  • Great review. I just got mine in the mail today charging now I can't wait to use it honestly I haven't truly heard of a bad complaint about this computer makes me feel relieve I made a good choice.

  • i want dat laptop sik sik sik excellant

  • I want that laptop. I'm very close o buyign one of these. Your reveiw may make me buy one right now. ^^

    Gateway owes you another sale.

  • ahhh wildwing.... I WISH Gateway gave me a commission! --- At least they let me hold on to the M151x.... (at least for the next few weeks!)

  • Simply put: remarkable. Your presentation upon which I stumble upon is perfect. It's your demeanor, your delivery, the pace, the poised voice; you are a pro. Thanks but don't forget that you could sell anything. So be critical to save our dollars and help us make a good choice. Pierre

  • Thanks Pierre....

I try to remember that people might actually buy the gear that I review... so I don't say it's good unless I actually believe it.

It's sad, but because of our size I don't feel comfortable doing "bad reviews" --- If a piece of gear is crap, I just send it back and let them know what we found wrong with it. Hopefully someday we'll be big enough to do BOTH sides, but for now... thanks for watching! Peace, Fr. Robert

  • I hate that it has no Firewire!

  • Yeah... that's probably the thing that I miss the most. As you might have guessed, I do a lot of video editing, I would have like to been able to just plug in and go instead of using an Express Card or Firewire/USB adapter.

  • Nice Video ;P

  • That's not a full sized keyboard. Nice bit of kit though.

  • ur name is now Dr. Radiovoiceman

  • macs suck man... no good things for a mac

  • macs suck man... no good things for a mac

  • i've played with this notebook, it's actually VERY nice for being a gateway. They certainly are coming back with a bang. If I hadn't already bought my HP, I may have considered this one.

  • I think I just found my new notebook! I've been shopping around for something to replace me POS Sony and this laptop looks absolutely like what I want. I am especially jazzed by the screen. Is it really as nice as you say? I downloaded the high res version just so I could see it better.

  • Did you say Pimp???

  • @Iam1

I dunno... did I? It wouldn't surprise me if I did... I like to use ALL the words that I have!

  • Nice notebook... But this isn't really a gaming system. What about that gaming notebook that you promsed us?

  • @nublerjr

It's coming -- check back in 3 episodes.

  • Do a review on Widow PC

  • Toaly. Widow PCs are aweasome for gaming. Too bad they're so darn expensive.

  • do a review on alienware

  • I've been trying to get an Alienware box for a while now... Hopefully they'll send us a review unit so we can put a few of these monsters head-to-head.

  • I do have to say, I like acer screens... but I doubt they are going to do a major change to gateway. I think Dell has the lead my a long shot on labtops, gamer or just basic.

  • sorry "by a long shot". But its good to see you do a review on a computer, not just a component.

  • I like Dell. In fact, ALL of the notebooks that I have ever bought have been Dell. Still, I like to see innovation, style and change. The M-Series of Gateway notebooks has me tempted. I may have to get one for myself!

  • how can we help u get over 10-11min mark who can we email or pester?

  • Very nice review :>

  • damn these vids are awesome

could you review a game maybye i know thats not your thing but it would be cool and also would bring in a new audience

    anyway thank father robert

  • Sounds like a very nice laptop, would like some more specs in the video though.

  • It seems as tho the better notebooks get the worse there battery life gets.

  • @litoak47

Yes and no... The individual components (CPU, Hard Drive, memory, LCD, etc.) have become more power efficient, but our demand for bigger screens, faster CPUs, and wireless connectivity means that we're not really seeing the increased efficiency. Battery technology also has not advanced nearly as fast as the components that it powers.

Still, compared to notebooks of 1 decade ago, notebooks are running longer, faster, and cooler.
