lviv is a great city with a storied history and so much to share to anyone willing to dive into it's past. I have been to Lviv twice (and i am American although i live in europe) and i can say that it is one of the few undiscovered jewels of europe. Fly to Krakow and take the train to Lviv, watch the sunrise in the ukrainien countryside and then arrive in historical train station and the beautiful city of Lviv

I have many friends from Canada of Ukrainian background. For years even when Ukraine was still part of the USSR, all my Ukrainian friends would always identify themselves as very proud Ukrainians. Funny all these years i never remember having hated a single person of Ukrainian decent. I don't know to much of Ukraine/Polish arguments, but from knowledge, most people that lives in the very eastern side of Poland are mostly Ukrainians.
I had a conversation one time of a Polish friend of Ukrainian descent. While he is proud to be Polish, he did say growing up in Poland they were somewhat discriminated. Apparently a person of Ukrainian background are better off saying his full blood Polish or else he would be looked down. My take is that if Lviv settled by 75% or more Ukrainian speaking people, why are Poles keeps insisting Lviv as Polish city?

Just keep in mind that is going to Kharkiv it's like going to the different country in comparison to what would see in L'viv. It's not only look it is also mentality and culture. You might want to ask your girlfriend about this. Evene if she has never been to L'viv or any other place in Western Ukraine she still be able to describe the difference.

I am an American and just got back from visiting Ukraine and went to Lviv while there. My grandmother was born and raised in Western Ukraine. The polish king took over this land according the law and gave the new city the name of the nearest ruthenian fortress. The city is on polish land of Ledzianie. Lwów zawsze był miastem etnicznych Ukraińców (Rusinów starej nazwy), ponieważ założył miasto wschodniosłowiańskie książę Danilo Galitsky i nazwie miasta po jego syn Leo Daniilovich! tak, że Lions należał do naszych przodków i naszym narodem!. Polska była częścią Imperium Rosyjskiego, Prus, Austro-Węgry, tak aby kraje te muszą również kwalifikować się i twierdzą, część Polska? I have many friends from Canada of Ukrainian background. For years even when Ukraine was still part of the USSR, all my Ukrainian friends would always identify themselves as very proud Ukrainians. Funny all these years i never remember having hated a single person of Ukrainian decent. I don't know to much of Ukraine/Polish arguments, but from knowledge, most people that lives in the very eastern side of Poland are mostly Ukrainians.

I had a conversation one time of a Polish friend of Ukrainian descent. While he is proud to be Polish, he did say growing up in Poland they were somewhat discriminated. Apparently a person of Ukrainian background are better off saying his full blood Polish or else he would be looked down. My take is that if Lviv settled by 75% or more Ukrainian speaking people, why are Poles keeps insisting Lviv as Polish city?

Just keep in mind that is going to Kharkiv it's like going to the different country in comparison to what would see in L'viv. It's not only look it is also mentality and culture. You might want to ask your girlfriend about this. Evene if she has never been to L'viv or any other place in Western Ukraine she still be able to describe the difference.
I guess my point is here that it might be very beneficial for you to explore different parts of the country) Good luck!

@WestUkraine City largely build by polaks and austro-hungary as Lemberg. But the fact that Galitsky was there for a period of about 60years in 13th century was an excuse to claim those territories as Ukraine after Stalin and Hitler occupaed Poland

@WestUkraine Tak i właśnie ci Polacy- okupanci założyli Uniwersytet Lwowski "kolegium JEZUICKIE" (najstarszy na Ukrainie), wybudowali Operę (architekt Gorgolewski- Polak), wybudowali ratusz, Cmentarz Orląt, Cmentarz Łyczakowski, cały projekt miasta jest polski. Pamietaj o tym że to nasze wspólne miasto a jak już kogoś z nas to prędzej polskie niż ukraińskie. Tam zawsze było więcej Żydów (yevryey), Austriaków, Rosjan, czy Ormian niż Ukraińców.

just don't care about Americans, they are dumb, a lot of them dont even know that such countries as Belorus, Bolgaria, Russia, Poland were all created by Ukraine which was called Kiyv Rus 1500 years ago. Some might deny this, just because they are jealous or think that they are greater

eerrr...Poland was not created by Kievian Russ :] they were both rivals fighting sometimeswith each other , until last Ruthenian prince gave the lands to his brother in law Polish King Kazimierz, more,... lands where Lviv is were Polish and oldest litopys -Nestor writes about that :]how Ruthenian prince invaded them and incorporated into Kievian Russ.

I live in Lviv.
I'm ukrainian.
And still I don't think we deserve this city because we don't look after it the way we supposed to.
It's just a shame how ugly it looks nowadays. Honestly... It's just a shame...
And it's not that we don't care. It looks as we have no idea how it has to be. And that's very sad...

poles please stop whining about lviv i realize that it was part of poland in intervals for over 300 hundred years altogether, but life isnt fair and ukaine has also lost many of its historical territories, stop whining its not like lviv will become part of poland

Dude, have you ever heard of industrialization? With out the USSR, the city wouldn't be even half as urbanized. Ever heard of the forklift company that used to be there? How about the TV factory? The Soviet Union created countless jobs in that city and attracted many people to it as a result. Countless roads, institutions and other elements that comprised its infrastructure were built. Also, when you say, "robbed", do you mean it robbed the city of its history, or if its level of culture? I can debate this for days with you, but based on your ignorant statements, I do not think it will make any difference.

I am an American and just got back from visiting Ukraine and went to Lviv while there. My grandmother was born and raised in Western Ukraine. If there is one thing I know, it is not, "The Ukraine," it is just, "Ukraine." "The Ukraine," is a way of saying the, "The Ukraine," is still a part of Russia or Porland. Which is not the case. I am proud to have Ukrainian blood in my viens.
