I would totally have chosen the phantom, so Raoul has money what of it. The phantom is really handsome with his mask on, he's tall, dark, mysterious plus he's a musician and a genius. To me no contest
Well. Raoul may have money, but he also didn't murder anyone, he never gave up for Christine, the love of his life. He also doesn't have mysterious [creepy-stalker] vibes. :P
But the fandom's all in good fun! I just had to give my vicomte-man some love!
Yeeeeah, pretty sure I'm not in love with Raoul for his money. I mean, a Parisian mansion would be nice and all, but it's Raoul's honorable nature, courage, steadfastness and on a more shallow point, the way he looks in a wet fencing shirt and dripping hair that makes him attractive to me.
Erik's a genius, that's no to be denied. But he obviously abuses his power.
i am a gerry phan the phantom rox i lovett him he is hot and sings awsome raul is better as willam barret travis in the alamo cut song this is a cute video
I have to disagree, though, about what you said about Leroux. I think in writing you always think of how people see your characters, It's vital to the entire story. Plot is one thing, but if your characters aren't established and given enough personality, the audience can't relate and lose interest.
Of course you establish the characters, that's how you move the plot forward. But in literature, more thought is put into the message. And Erik is not just a musical genius, he's a genius-of-all-trades. We've been having a long conversation, here. Be easier if you'd b my friend.
I think so. No, I don't like that so many phans and Raoul fans alike think they have to take one side completely. I do agree; Erik is a musical genius (I couldn't write music to save my life, so I applaud him greatly) and especially in the movie, his plight moves us to tears and sympathy. I do think he needs a nice girl to show him things like sunlight and humanity and compassion. Just not Christine. But Raoul will always be my special hero. :) ..cont..
Considering that the definition of a fop is; a man who is excessively vain and concerned about his dress, appearance, and manners. No, I can't say that he was. Just because someone has perfect hair (in my opinion) and is put together doesn't make them foppish.
Besides, if he was that worried about his clothing, he wouldn't have slept by Christine's door for fear of his shirt wrinkling, discarded his nice gold watch and jacket to go searching in the cellars for her, or lept onto a horse after her without puasing to sweep a comb through his hair. So no, I don't think he's foppish at all.
Well, thank you. *sweeping bow* Now you know what I mean about that R/C AIAOY vid being one of the only places to have a one-sided Raoul fest. :) Everywhere else I turn it into a heated debate over how awesome he is and DANGIT WHY CAN'T THE WORLD SEE IT!?!? *sobs* I'll be ok.. xP really.
You're so strong.... AIAOY is the only vid in the world... where proud R/C Phans can feel safe to unite... so sad. WHY... WHY? WHY? seriously... we Must open a Raoul Shrine in the world... or maybe the cyberworld... but Yay, Raoul...
I would worry about his shirt... best thing you see in the entire movie... maybe it's better wrinkled... b/c the only time you see it wrinkled...? when it's wet... *yeah* (but also like the necklace... don't know why... maybe it's strategic placement?(
That just sent me into a fit of giggles. :P Mmm.. that whole tied-to-the-grate part... I wished the lair scene would have been extended for a half hour longer. But then he would have been cold and sad the whole time. Hm..
I've started tutoring a whole clan of Raoul supporters and fans at my house. Goodness knows I have enough siblings to spread the joy. =)
... and... if Raoul was a "fop", why does he only have 3 outfits??? (Well, 4 if you count the puffy shirt, when he discards his vest/jacket...) I've always wondered why he doesn't get a new suit or something... I mean he's a vicomte!
You have to remember, too, that's how they all dressed back then. If you've ever seen Marie Antionette, you'd realize that Raoul is really very simply dressed for a Vicomte.
Yay, Raoul... perfect... not a stray hair in sight... where does he get his hairspray??? but...awesome vid... I suddenly found myself saying aww... b/c i thought of Erik/Raoul... awesome...
Well, Gaston Leroux was too occupied with the meaning of the story to worry about how everyone would think of the characters, so no 1's saying he thought that. Again, Raoul may b the hero, but sympathy dictates we root for Erik. At least you aren't contradicting that Erik is a genius in need of compassion like the rest of Raoul's fangirls. No, you put up an unusually logical argument that I find amusing. I think we must agree to disagree.
Sympathize, yes. Want him to win? Maybe ALW and the rest of the phans, but I just can't see Gaston Leroux writing it and going, "Brilliant! Now everyone will be in love with Erik, and call Raoul sissy names!!" No. Raoul's still the hero that's meant to be rooted on.
Oh, and I'm having trouble understanding how a guy who would kill your love to get to you is attractive. Take away Erik's incredible voice and the gorgeous side of his face, and what's left? As Christine says, it's in his soul that the true distortion lies. One of the major points of Leroux's book is that judging someone by thier looks is dangerous- not to mention stupid. So by doing the same to Raoul you're not really looking into the story at all.
No 1s judging Raoul's apprance, and originally Erik's whole face was hideous. What's lft is a genius. Not his fault he went mad; that we can blame on evrybody but the Persian. How can you know that, given Erik's true past, you wouldn't have turned out the same. The attraction lies in his tortured being, and in the fact that he trly needs compation. I don't condone what he did, but I can understand why he did it, whch makes me more sympathetic, and Raoul seem infintessimal dspite his honor.
>:( He's not stupid. He's the only one who figured out how to trap Erik. AND he beat him in a sword fight. Ya'll are just blind to his awesomeness because you have a thing for the hot phsyco killer.
Amen to that, Betha!! Raoul rules that Opera House! But if both of you run off with the main characters, can I capture Murtagh and make him be the new Opera Ghost? He'd make such a sweetie as that!!
And Raoul rocks, again, just to clarify that point. DON'T DUMP ON RAOUL WHEN BETHIE AND AOIFE ARE AROUND TO DEFEND HIS HONOUR.
:) I think Murtagh can take over Erik's duties while Kit and I turn Phanty into the new Santa. Cape, mask, and all. Raoul has to go with him to make sure he gives the kids presents that aren't downright disturbing of course... And while he's there, I'm sure Phanty will make him carry all the presents.
The only reason they let him be the 1 to figure it out is because Andrew Lloyd Weber ignores the Persian's existence. And of course he won; Erik is old enough to be Raoul's father! Anyway, it didn't really work. You see, Erik knew Raoul would use Christine as bait. He let that happen so that he could kidnap Christine, in order to trap Raoul, so he can use Raoul as bait to trap Christine.
Mhmm.. sure. He 'let' Raoul beat him. Yeah. I think you're ignoring the fact that Gaston Leroux wrote the novel with Raoul as the hero of the story. He's the faithful, concerned, gentlemanly hero who wants nothing more than to save Christine from whatever 'angel of music' is scaring her out of her wits. Stop putting the guy down and just admit that the only reason not to like him is taste in looks. Because logically and reasonably, you can't win this debate.
No, the writers of the movie script let him win, not the Phantom. And Raoul may be the hero, but we are SUPPOSED to root for Erik. I am ignoring nothing. Already I concede that Raoul is honorable. That doesn't make him intelligent compared to Erik. And you still don't understand that Raoul would never have found Christine again without the Persian; and Christine may have been scared, but she still loved Erik.
We are not supposed to root for Erik. We're supposed to be taught a lesson and not treat people the way he was treated all his life. Christine looked to him in fear... awe, even, but that wasn't real love. Real love is sacrificial- not selfish, like Erik's.
I know the Persian was majorly important to helping Raoul find Christine. But that doesn't take away the fact that he risked his life at every turn to save her. Note the sacrifice. THAT is real love.
When was Erik supposed to learn the truth about selfishness, when the sultan ordered his death? No1 said he wasn't selfish. Anyway, it was COMPLETELY sacrificial of him to let her go, and she did love him. Maybe not in a romantic way, more as a father, but she loved him. And the whole point of the villain being the protagonist is that we sympathize and want him to win.
OMG! I love this song! It's my favorite song from Into the Woods! And surprisingly it really kind of works with phantom...weirdly and funnily so. Fantastic vid!
